From the Principal Do I really need a COVID test?

Last week I sent an update letter about COIVD and I hope you received your copy. I’ve heard some families are concerned about whether an unwell child needs to have a COVID test if it is just a cold. I have just re-read the information sent to me by the Government and their latest rules really come down to one major thing, which is

“If you have cold or flu symptoms you should be tested.”

For us at the College that means any child or staff member sent home due to having cold or flu symptoms will be asked to be tested. But you cannot come back to school until two things happen:

You will need to show us that you have a negative result. This should be sent to the office by email, a copy of your text message, or a note.

You will need to be well, i.e. no more cold or flu symptoms.

I have drawn a simple flowchart that hopefully helps you understand when you need a test:

Staffing News I am thrilled to tell you that a new Preschool teacher Mrs Lisa Addison will be joining us as early next term. Lisa is coming from St Luke’s Preschool and has years of experience. She already knows some of our families and we wish her well as she finishes her current role over the next few weeks. I also have some sad news which is that our wonderful Librarian Ms Justine Tonkin has announced her resignation. She has worked here for many years and I am certain thousands of students have been helped to complete assignments or find new books thanks to Justine.

Student Leadership I have worked at many schools and I know we do student leadership really well here, and this year is no exception. We have set aside some time for a group of Staff, Board and current student Leaders to conduct the interviews for 2021 student leadership roles. It is a remarkable experience and provides us with a wonderful insight into the depth of leadership that is growing in our school and the effectiveness of our leadership model where young people can begin to grow in leadership roles at an early age. Over the next week we will work through the combination of expressions of interest from Senior School students and then our students and staff can let us know if they are willing to support these young people in a leadership role. It is important to know these are not popularity votes but rather an indication that we use along with the interview notes to celebrate how these young adults can assist the whole College. Our Recent Sporting Events It is also wonderful to hear from our teachers and students about the work being done in both enjoying sports and challenging each other in sportsmanship recently. We have had some students train for a range of team events and we have tried to update you via Facebook when parents have not been allowed to watch the games. I am appreciative of the extra work being done by our staff to allow these updates to happen so quickly. Celebrating Science Week Last week our amazing science staff performed some extraordinary shows for almost every class to celebrate the wonderful world of science. It is terrific to see passionate volunteer students also work with these experts to deepen their own learning at the same time as blessing other students. Lastly… Again we have a packed Chronicle and I hope you enjoy seeing more of what we do here each week. I also hope you find some time to rest, renew, and rejoice in what God is doing in your lives.

Sincerely,

Mr Phillip Wilson Principal

We are half way through Term 3!

Years 9 and 10 have been studying self-management techniques and how to control impulses, manage stress, and increase their academic achievement by submitting drafts of assignments for teacher feedback and getting organised to submit tasks early. As always, everyone needs a little motivation so following on from the wildly successful "Pringle Prize Draw" last term, we are running a "Beat The Clock, Win a Choc Block" competition. Students who submit any assignment as a draft for feedback from their teacher before the due date, or submit their assignment early go into the draw to win a block of chocolate at the end of term. So far Year 9 have over 15 entries already! Some of the ways you could help at home include:

• Encourage your child to set up a clear and tidy study space

• Put their phone or other devices in another room while they study or work on assignments

• Work on one task at a time (not watching TV or Netflix or chatting online while they do it)

• Start early so as to get teacher feedback

• Create a set time every day for "Homework" so that your child can get in the routine of working at home Year 12 students have just finished their Trial HSC Exams. This has been good practise for the HSC Exams in Term 4, and students will now have the opportunity to refine their skills and deepen their understanding of the course content during the remainder of this term.

Music, Design and Technology and Visual Arts students will be finalising their major works and performances, ready for marking later this term. While we can’t have an HSC Showcase in the same way we have done in the past, we are working on a way to share the students’ works and performances with family and the College community. Year 11 students are getting closer to their Preliminary exams, which will be held in Weeks 9 & 10 of this term. The Business Studies students are in the midst of running a business through the $20 Boss Challenge. See the advertisement below for one of the student-run businesses: COVID Care Packs. Keep an eye on Prime 7 news this week for interviews with a series of these students.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS

On Monday afternoon the Preston Butcher Cup Round Robin Touch Football competition took place at Jubilee Park with the Wagga Wagga Christian College senior girls taking part in the competition. The girls had been spending their recess and lunch times down on the school oval training and preparing for the competition.

Although touch football was a new game to most of the girls involved, they all showed up to training willing to learn, play and represent the school. During training the girls were able to learn and build on skills of the game, learning to play together as a team.

Over the afternoon the girls were set to play TRAC and Kooringal High school teams. Playing their first game of the afternoon, and for some girls their first game ever, they were up against TRAC. Despite starting the game off slowly the girls were able to come together, have fun and work as a team. Although going down in their first game the girls were able to go into the game against Kooringal High with high spirits. With an improved understanding of the game, the girl’s defence improved and held off Kooringal, while playing a good attacking side. Throughout the afternoon the team was successful in scoring a try against Kooringal High, with Senna (Year 10) being successful in getting the try through.

Congratulations to all the girls for their awesome effort over the afternoon!!!

Thank you to Mr Gyles, Mrs Johnson and Mr Cunningham for coaching and Charlotte Nugent (Year 12) for being

Captain.

A group of Year 10 students have started a work group program last week. Their second day of completing practical projects around the College will run this week and we look forward to hearing about their progress later in the term. What a great Science Week experience we had last Thursday and Friday in the MPC. Thank you to Ms Duggan, the Science staff and students who shared their love of God’s creation through Science with the rest of us over the two days. Our staff were blessed with coffee from the White Dove Café last week. A big thank you to Mrs Deighton and her team of students who served us all. Have a great week!

MRS DEIGHTON

MIDDLE AND SENIOR SCHOOL TEACHER

What is your role at the College?

I look after Worship and I am a Middle and Senior School Teacher. I am currently teaching Year 7 & 8 Technology Mandatory, Christian Life Studies (better known as CLS), Year 9 & 10 Food Technology and Child Studies. I also lead the White Dove Café, where students have the opportunity to learn to barista and use these skills at College events. How long have you been part of the College Community?

Well I am one of the many staff members at the College who also went to school here. (There are a growing number of us, including Mrs Joiner in the Junior School, Mr Cunningham in the Middle School, Mrs McLean in the Office, not to mention the staff support in Junior School, OOSH and Cleaning areas of the College!). I started Year 7 in 1997, graduating in 2002. I was back here as a teacher temporarily in 2009 but permanently from 2012. I now also have three girls who all started at the College Preschool and are now in Junior School, the youngest in Kindergarten - and loving it!! What are you passionate about?

Discipleship of teenagers and a love of food! I am so fortunate in my current role at the College that I am encouraged to share my love for both of my passions. God used the two years I spent studying and working at Cornerstone Bible College not only to equip me to share the Bible with others, but it was during this time that I discovered I thrived as I sought to disciple teenagers. From there teaching around food was a natural partnering with my desire for teenagers to get know God and build a relationship with Him. Post tertiary study at CSU I secured work at the College and each day I am inspired to share my passions with the students. Our College is unique in the freedom it offers to talk about God our creator and I feel so blessed that God uses me to disciple students. What do you do for fun?

That’s easy! Cake decorating! I get so much joy out of decorating cakes, whether it is my daughter’s birthday cake or cakes for a friend’s birthday there is so much creativity and scope working with cake and icing. My ultimate favourite cake was my brother’s wedding cake - it took two days, but I was so happy with the result.

I have just started to introduce my girls to cake decorating at home. We all enjoyed being part of the Cookie Competition at school last term. Cake decorating makes an appearance in the classroom too with one of the highlights of the year being the Fake it Bake It Cake Off competition for Year 9 & 10 Food Tech. The students enjoy it as much as I do!

For many students and families some things are so much part of the College it is hard to imagine time without them. The Cattle Team is one such area. The team has enjoyed growth and success, a natural complement to the growing agriculture faculty of the College over the last six years.

The establishment of the Cattle Team was instigated by Mr David Crick, now TAS Faculty Head, in his second year at the College. With a background in Ag teaching and experience with a high school cattle team at Barham High School, David could see that the Cattle program would have multiple benefits:

“My experience of cattle teams were one of family. Introducing students into an extra

curricular program where they needed to be committed and care for stock gives students an opportunity to belong to a community and build

connections across year groups.”

Toni Nugent, College mum of three and one of the key partners of the initial program agrees,

“The College Cattle Team has been one big family, with students always willing to jump in and help. Each year we go away with the team several times to shows and it always strikes me

afresh just what great kids they are.”

Enthusiasm and engagement of students has characterised the Cattle program from the beginning. Caring for cattle is hard work, requiring daily feeding, regular and consistent training, and brushing and grooming of the animals. The students learn to take responsibility, support one another and care for the smallest in the team. Students from Year 4 upwards have participated the daily care and special event showing of the stock.

“The support of some key families as we established the Cattle Program at the College

was invaluable. Our thanks and gratitude to the Nugent, MacClure and Batcheldor families in

particular. Without their initial support, connections with the local farming community and willingness to help source stock, feed and

run the odd BBQ for team fundraising, the program wouldn’t have received the impetus to

move forward so dramatically.”

From the first show at Finley, where ten students and six cows enjoyed great success in the Junior Judging and Parading events, the team has gone from strength to strength in both numbers involved and success at shows. The culmination of the 2019 season saw 20 students attending the Royal Melbourne Show and the team as a whole achieving third place, including the Nugent sisters, Charlotte and Jemima, winning Senior Grand Champion Parader and Reserve Junior Champion Parader respectively.

As a College there continues to be a commitment to resource a program which develops resilient students, offers opportunity to grow students into responsible leaders, serving others as they lead a team, and partners with parents to the benefit of all.
