GOSFORD TIMES 24.9.1915.

A SOLDIER FAMILY.

Private George Cunningham, a member of the well known

family who resided in Gosford for so many years, was in town

on Saturday. Of the four brothers, three have enlisted. Jim

and George are both in Liverpool camp, and Tom is in the

hospital at Heliopolis. He took part in the famous Gallipoli bat-

tles, and was wounded in the right eye, necessitating two op-

erations. A Cable received on 25th August, however, stated

that he was doing well and was recovering his eyesight.

CUNNINGHAM – Killed in action in France, August 17, 1916, Private James Cunningham, beloved friend of

Evie R. Dumbrell, Martin Street, North Sydney.

GOSFORD TIMES 22.9.1916. Killed in France – James Cunningham, a resident of Gosford most of his life. He enlisted with the Ambu-

lance Corps. Deep sympathy is expressed with the bereaved family.

GOSFORD TIMES. 7.12.1916.

A GOSFORD LAD.

Mr Thomas Hall, of Gosford, has received the following letter from Private George Cunningham referring to

the death of his brother, Jim Cunningham. The letter was written from “Somewhere in France.” I suppose

you have heard long before this about poor Jim’s death. It appears that Jim with twelve others of the 1st

Field Ambulance were seated in a dug-out awaiting their turn to carry patients to the dressing station, when

an enemy shell struck the dug out, resulting in the death of four and wounding four others, my brother be-

ing killed instantly. I last saw him alive a week or so before it happened, when our lot relieved his. I had

seen him several times before, and was trying hard to get a transfer so that I would be with him. But I sup-

pose it was just as well I did not succeed, as if I had done so, I would most likely have been in the dug-out

with him. Please remember me to all friends. Trust that the Ambulance Corps is still going on in Gosford.
