COME HOME FOR EASTER We are rapidly approaching the most important period in the church calendar. It is the five Sundays in Lent followed by Palm Sunday and Easter. Lent begins on March 13, which is also Confirmation Sunday when some of our young people who have completed the confirmation class studies will be making their personal profession of faith. When we celebrate Easter we are reminded of the price Jesus paid two thousand years ago for the forgiveness of our sins.

Nature is affirming this good news of the resurrection with buds and flowers springing forth from plants which appeared dead but were only dormant. When a baby is baptized the parents reaffirm their personal faith and promise to bring up this child in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. The members of the congregation also make a vow to provide the atmosphere and direction for every baptized child to be confirmed by professing their own faith. It is a solemn time. It is a memorable occasion.

Over the past thirty months or so, our church family was weakened. We have lost touch with most of our high school age young people. Cur-rently, there is no high school age Sunday School Class or PYC. The middle school age group has also lost some of its members. Fortunately the young people in the confirmation class are in this group and we’re thankful to have them. We have lost touch with even more adults in our church family.

We are recovering, slowly but surely. Attendance at worship has gradually increased, and we have hope for adult and youth Sunday School. As your pastor for the time being, I want to enlist your help in a program I announced to the Session February 20th. During Lent I will be making phone calls personally inviting young people and adults who have been absent for awhile to...

Dear friends in Christ:

As I write this column, we are less than a week away from our highly anticipated and widely advertised

concert featuring the well-known Houghton College Choir from Houghton College in upstate New York. Our core steering committee has been hard at work for several months now to make our evening with the choir a suc-cess. I know that it will be a great evening and that everyone who makes it to the concert will certainly be happy they made the effort to attend. Pulling off such a large scale endeavor would not have been possible without all of you who volunteered to open your homes to these amazing college students and all of you who are bringing food for the dinner before the concert and the reception following the concert. I know these students will feel so wel-comed when they step off the bus and see everything that you have done to make the evening flow smoothly. Of course, every event like this has those special people who do so much of the thankless work themselves…such as setting up all the housing assignments (and changing them at least eight times afterwards), and planning all the food for the dinner. These individuals have been a great help to me over these past few months and this concert could not have happened without them. Thank you Judy Gibson, Janice Blanton and Carole Coble for all of your hard work. This concert will happen only because of your tireless hours of dedication!

After the charter bus pulls out of the parking lot and all the air mattresses are put away, we will turn our

attention to the changing seasons of the liturgical year. Yes, Lent will arrive on Ash Wednesday, March 9. It is later than normal this year, with Easter Day falling on Sunday, April 24. Regardless, we look toward to the forty days of Lent (Sundays are not included in the forty days) as a time of reflection and self-examination as we prepare our hearts and minds for the Great Three Days of Christ’s betrayal, arrest, crucifixion and resurrection. The sea-son of Lent is a time of quiet reflection on the humanity and suffering of Christ and how those characteristics relate to our own human failings. As you will soon see, many aspects of our music together will reflect the season, just as every season has special musical characteristics. The musical patterns, harmonies, rhythms and texts of the an-thems and hymns will mirror the season. Things will be more somber. The tempi of the hymns will be slightly slower. Even the harmonies of the hymns I improvise at the organ will reflect that it is Lent. This season, we will grow together in our faith as we use our worship services to relate the last weeks of Christ’s life on earth through words, hymn texts and instrumental music.

Lastly, I would like to report that our rehearsals for not only the Little Chapel Chancel Choir (who you

hear every Sunday), but also for the Little Chapel Ringers and the Little Chapel Children’s Choir, have been going very well as we prepare music for the upcoming liturgical seasons. In general, the Little Chapel Ringers will plan to play the first Sunday of every month from now until May, with special pieces on February 27 and Easter Day. The Little Chapel Children’s Choir plans to sing the third Sunday of every month from now until May, including special music on the Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday. Of course, this schedule is subject to change based on our progress in rehearsals, but we hope to present special music for the glory of God on those Sundays.

Soli Deo Gloria, C. Justin Smith

Presbyterian Youth Connection

The train is leaving the station.........Saturday, March 12. Well actually, we are packing cars, not trains. But Middle School PYC is going to

Camp Kirkwood!

We will depart EARLY MARCH 12, 8:00 A.M., from the Little Chapel, but you can sleep on the way. The Keynote speaker is Hank Bellamy, the Youth Director at Macpherson Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville and a member of the Coastal Carolina Presbytery Youth Council. He will focus on our theme “Inflate Your Faith!” There will be small group activities, worship activities, playtime activities, a promise of an awesome service project that we'll find out about when we register.

Even a night of Karaoke!! Pack your sleeping bag and warm clothing and join us. Scholarships are available from your last fundraiser. See John Moore or Linda Allen or visit http://presbycc.org/youth/default.htm. We'll return Sunday morning in time for four of our middle school youth's Confirmation Ceremony.

Congratulations Confirmands!!!

While millions prepared to watch the Super Bowl on February 6, the youth at the Little Chapel on the Boardwalk participated in a different kind of bowl, the S-O-U-P-E-R Bowl of Caring. They joined tens of thousands of youth around the country to fight hunger and poverty. Because of the very generous donations of The Little Chapel with the Big Heart, our children and youth were able to give the Salvation Army of Wilmington $492.00 and 239 cans of soup/vegetables. Thank you so much for re-sponding to Jesus’ call to share our abundance with those in need. The enthusiasm of our children and youth was so contagious – what a fun and joyful Souper Bowl! Thank you to John Moore for rallying our youth and for finding our very own referee, Larry Honeycutt. Special thanks to our caring youth - Bryce and Hunt Allen; Meredith, Elizabeth and Sherman “Brother” Criner; Nicholas Herren; Adeline and Tim Hines; Michael O’Neil; Sammy Santaniello; and Thomas Simmons for making such a difference in the lives of others.

MARCH 13

Hunt Allen, Meredith Criner, Adeline Hines and Thomas Simmons will soon complete preparation for confirmation. We are excited to welcome these new confirmed members during worship (March 13) as they continue their journey of faith.

FROM THE

MODERATOR SHIRLEE

GEARHART. . .

In spite of the extreme cold we have had this winter, daffodils are coming up and before long the face of spring will reflect the blooming of these cheerful flowers and the tulip tree. A nice reminder that sunshine is here after a dark and cold winter. Thanks to God who created pansies which lift their cheerful faces to us even through the snow! Maybe as Christians we should be more like the pansies, a cheerful face in dark times.

If you did not attended the CWU- Church Women United meeting in February at Winter Park Presbyterian Church, you missed a treat. Maybe next time.

Right now I am wearing two hats, so I attended a Presbytery meeting Saturday, February 12, in Fayetteville with Linda Allen regarding VBS and “Spiritually Feeding our Youth”. It was most helpful. We got excited about the activities (and me about the art) and expect to have a wonderful turn out of children this summer. (Future Presbyterian women, you know!) Since we are getting “geared” up for Vacation Bible School, may I suggest that if you would like to help, contact Linda Allen or myself.

The death of Nancy Woodson took us all by surprise. She was involved in so many activities and has served as a faithful contributing member of Little Chapel for many years. Nancy is missed. We have lost so many women this year. When I sent the End of Year report, it reflected the loss of nine (9) women members (plus 1 non-member) in 2010.

Our PW Council has noted that we are missing plain white rectangular table cloths. If you have taken tablecloths home to launder and perhaps have not re-turned them, please do so. We do need white for our receptions. We are going to set up a Memorial Fund for White Tablecloths as an effort to purchase what is needed.

I wish to thank all ladies for serving this church so well and for all the special things you do in the name of God, the Father. You women are such wonderful caretakers and so much is done by you that warrents recognition but is not given because you do not call attention to yourself or what you do for other people. Now to me that is a real Christian attitude. Thank you.

Keep me and the PW Council in your prayers.

FLOWER CALENDAR

Beyond the Door To better love God and Christ, our friend,

We pass through death’s door; but it’s not the end. It’s only the birth of something more — The eternal joy earth’s prepared us for!

—Peggy Ferrell

We extend Christian sympathies to the family of long-time member and elder of our church, Mrs. Nancy Plowman Woodson, who died Sunday morning, January 30, 2011. Nancy joined the Little Chapel December 5, 1976. She is remembered for her great sense of humor, generous stewardship of her time, and for her friendship. She actively participated in the worship and life of the Church. She was a member of the Prayer and Share Team, the Singles Meet ‘n Eat group, the Presbyterian Women and served as the Moderator of Circle #6. She regularly attended Sunday School, helped with the Women’s Prison Ministry Program and the Little Chapel Garden Club. Nancy served as secretary for Mothers’ Morning Out and the Personnel and Planning Committee. She was a member of the Harbor Island Garden Club, the Red Hat Society and one of the founding members of the Sand Dollar Investment Club. Her two sons survive her: Chris and Ted Woodson; four grandchildren -Jim, Anderson (Andie), Wyatt and Cole; and a brother - Norvell Plowman, Jr. Her beloved husband Jim, daughter Susannah and sister Selma preceded her in death. To use the words of the Apostle Paul, Nancy abounded in the work of the Lord. She knew that, in the Lord, her labor was not in vain. Therefore, we remember her with deep thanksgiving before God “who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:56, NRSV).

Dr. Gerald S. Rosselot, a member of our church since February 12, 1989, died February 15. His beloved wife Nancy and a brother, James Rosselot, survive him. Dr. Rosselot was a member of the English Department at UNCW and retired as an Associate Professor with Emeritus Status in 1990. We extend Christian sympathies to Nancy and James. Dr. Rosselot left for us a witness best expressed in the words of the Apostle Paul: “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18, NIV).

Our most sincere sympathy surrounds Mickey Trost, whose beloved husband Herb Trost, died Feb. 20. A memorial service was held at the Little Chapel on the Boardwalk Thursday, February 24. Dr. David Jenkins officiated. Herb became a member of the Little Chapel on February 9, 2003. Herb taught Sunday School and actively participated in the life and worship of the church.

Mabel Duke Weeks, a former member of our church, died in her Raleigh home on February 21, 2011. Although she had moved from the area, Mabel stayed in touch and sustained our ministry with her gifts and prayers. She is survived by two sons: Hardy Parker Jr. (Vickie) and Steve Parker (Lisa); one daughter; Mabel Duke Parker (Michele Godeman); and one granddaughter; Ellie Parker.

While we extend our deepest sympathy to the families, we also rejoice in the witness of lives redeemed. “This is life eternal,” says our Lord, “that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (John 17:3, KJV).

We are preparing the flower calendar for the remainder of 2011. The price per vase is $50.00. You may choose to fill one or two vases on the Sunday of your choice. The flowers can be for memorials, anniversaries, birth-days, or any special occasion you choose. There is not a line item in the budget for flowers; therefore, fresh flowers will only be purchased when money has specifically been given to the “Flower Fund.” Please complete the form on page 7 with your requests. As in the past, we will honor these requests in the order in which they are received, so please give this your prompt attention. Once we receive your form and check, your request will be posted on the flower calendar. You may mail the form and check marked “Flower Fund” to the church office or put them in the offering plate. Unless you request otherwise, the flowers will be delivered to shut-ins as well as to nursing homes and hospitals. Thank you for your support of this program. As you can tell, not only are the flowers used to beautify our sanctuary (or narthex) on Sunday mornings, but they are enjoyed throughout the week by our members who cannot be with us for worship. Please note: Occasionally, one vase is ordered for a particular Sunday. If so, the vase will be used to beautify the nartex. If there are two vases for the same Sunday, the vases will be placed in the sanctuary. An acknowledgement for any and all vases purchased will be put into the bulletin announcements for any designated Sunday.

The lily is perhaps the most common Easter symbol because it’s displayed dur-ing Easter worship services and blooms around this time each year. The lily’s bulb decays in the earth, yet new life sprouts from it in the form of the flower reminiscent of the new life that emerged from the tomb so many years ago.

This year, you may purchase Easter Lilies to help decorate the Church Sanctuary on Easter morning, April 24. The cost will be $10.00 per plant and may be placed in honor or memory of someone.

Please place your order by Friday, April 15, 2011.

Dear LCOB Family, We all come to crossroads during our lifetime and face difficult decisions. One of our most difficult decisions has just been reached. As a teenager, I stood in the sanctuary of Little Chapel over fifty years ago, sadly saying good-

bye to all my friends, Mrs. McCarl and Rev. Jerry. I vowed to myself, one day I would retire here. And thanks to my husband, we did! Bill & I moved here five years ago. Reconnecting with Little Chapel and old friends and making lots of new friends has been won-derful. But we have grandchildren now and we do not get to see them very often. We also have not seen our three children as often as we thought we would, but when your children grow up and have their own fami-lies, it’s hard for them to travel. So after lots of prayers and asking for guidance, we have decided to return to Pinehurst. We will miss Little Chapel and all of you so very much. We thank you for making us part of your family for the past five years. We feel very blessed for having shared these years with you. We take many happy memories with us. We will be leaving on March 14, but we will be back some days the last two weeks of March. We do plan to be at church a couple of Sundays during March . Our new address is below. May God continue His blessings on each of you.

Dear Little Chapel on the Boardwalk, Thank you so much for the cookies that you delivered to my house this week. They were very delicious. It was very thoughtful for you to do that and I appreciate it. I enjoyed the service last Sunday and I will most likely be back soon! ~ Will Thornton

To my wonderful friends at the Little Chapel, Thank you so much for the prayers, cards, flowers and visits while I was in the hospital for a most unexpected stay. After I went to stay with Debbie for about four weeks, all of the food you brought was wonderful, as Debbie is not able to cook. We all enjoyed it so much.

We love all of you, Bertha Martin

Presbyterian Counseling Center

CENTERPOINT

“Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray.” (Proverbs 22:6) What kind of a parent have you been? Fueling this question is the flurry of media attention and debate over Amy Chua’s book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. The Chinese American mother’s new memoir of how she raised her two daughters stirs up some unsettling questions about parenting. Mrs. Chua presents an extreme, non-negotiable style of parenting. For instance, her daughters were not permitted to earn a grade lower than an A. The “tiger mother” forced her daughters to practice the vio-lin and piano daily for hours, starting when they were pre-schoolers. Once she berated both girls for the sloppiness of handmade birthday cards they had made for her, and she refused to accept the cards. The book has provoked outrage at this mother’s extreme expectations and authoritarian approach. “She must be crazy.” But upon reflection there has also been a more reasoned response. “Could she be right in some respects?” The daughters have grown to be admirable, successful young adults. Parenting may often seem like a puzzle to be solved. In actuality it is a complicated dance that balances responsible good sense and empathic love. The Presbyterian Counseling Center is here to help families explore specific issues of parenting.

ASH WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9

7:00PM WORSHIP

Lent is the season of preparation for Easter. During Lent, Christians enter into a season of personal discipline, in order to focus one’s whole life on the sacrifice Jesus made for us, and the meaning of following him. This kind of spiritual fasting helps some people to stay focused and grateful for the blessings we are able to enjoy regu-larly. Lent takes place over the 40 days leading to Easter (Sundays are not counted in the 40).

SPRING UPDATE FOR TILESTON OUTREACH We want to thank everyone who donated winter items to Tileston Outreach so far this year. Please do NOT bring any more winter clothing until next fall. Watch for updates in the September newsletter. There is no storage space for off-season clothing at Tileson Libby Frye is looking for volunteer drivers for “Team Tileston” for April and May. We need folks who can pick up donations at the church on Sunday or a week day and then take our gifts to Tileston Outreach on any day Monday through Thursday from 9-11:30am. So far three possible teams are in place. If you do not wish to load your car on Sunday, you may return to the church on a weekday morning to get Dan Holt to load your car. Volunteers will unload the donations for you at Tileston. If this team ap-proach works well this spring, we’ll repeat the process next fall. FYIO: We will not need drivers this summer; also we do not take donations to Tileston in December or during Easter week. Libby Frye will be in the narthex following the service on March 6 and March 13 to answer questions and sign up volunteers for the driving team. Libby will coordinate these efforts via e-mail and phone; she will furnish detailed directions to Tileston. (Libby will be gone from March 17-April 9; please con-tact her at 793-1033 before she leaves.) Drivers are needed for the weeks of April 3 and 10. (Tileston is closed from Good Friday through Easter Monday; there will be no collections during that time.) We will also need drivers May 1, 8, 15 and 22. We will not be taking large donations to Tileston between Memorial Day and Labor Day. TOILETRIES FOR TILESON are welcome any Sunday of the year. These may be placed in the basket on the mission table.

Special thanks to Ellen Dudley, our first volunteer to “Team Tileston.” Ellen took donations to Tileston during the month of February. Do NOT bring any donations of clothing or household goods in March. Per-haps you can spend some time this month finding some warm weather clothes to donate next month. Spring and summer clothes are welcome starting on April 3. We expect to have the driving team in place by that date.

Grab your walking shoes, sign up and join The Little Chapel Boardwalkers as they team up to raise money to help find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. 400,000 people in the US have MS, with hundreds more being diagnosed every day; several members of our congregation or their family members have/are coping with MS. The 2011 Walk MS will take place at the Greenfield Lake Park on Saturday, April 30. Please put this date on your calendars, gather your family and friends, hope for a sunny day, and join us for a great day of fun, fellowship, and great exercise. We are grateful to Janet O’Neil, who has accepted the responsibility to organize the MS Walk. Please contact her for more information at 794-8703 or [email protected].

2011 MEXICO MISSION TRIP This October, Little Chapel members will join a combined work group with Winter Park Baptist Church and travel to Reynosa, Mexico to build a house for a very poor, deserving family. As we have done since 2001, our team will work through the auspices of Faith Ministry, based in McAllen, Texas. The Rev. Mike Womble of Winter Park Baptist will lead the trip. If you have questions, please contact Bryan McIntyre at 792-6196. The exact week of the trip will be decided soon.

The Ecumenical Habitat for Humanity House is nearing completion, and will soon be a home for a deserving mom and her special needs son. Volunteers from LCOB have helped dig the foundation and apply siding, and our next and final opportunity to impact the lives of this fam-ily will be a chance to help clean up the home site on Saturday, March 19, from 8 to about noon. Absolutely no training is necessary!

There will be no climbing, digging, ladders, paint, sheet rock, electrical, or plumbing work to do. All we will need to do is pick up things from the yard and put them in the dumpster!

Little Chapel volunteers will be the last to work on the project before the final dedication and move-in by the new family. They clearly saved the best until last!

If you are available on February 26, and would like to see the house before the dedication, this is your chance. Please sign up in the fellowship hall, call Mary Jo Kohunsky at 509-0258, or email her at [email protected]. You will receive more than you give.

For a number of years Little Chapel has participated in the “2-cents-a-meal” program, which was initiated by Presbyterian Women in l976 in order to involve individuals and families in a corporate re-sponse to world hunger. The Witness and Service Committee, along with the Christian Education Committee, are soon going to take a new approach to accomplishing our endeavors to raise awareness and funds for the fight against hunger.

On Sunday, March 6, we will kick off our “Feed the Pig” program, which will involve our children, youth and all members of Little Chapel. Soon, our chil-dren and youth will be painting small piggy banks at upcoming PYC and PKC meetings for collecting change at home to feed the hungry. Additional piggy banks will be available in the narthex, so that individuals/families (without chil-dren in PYC or PKC) will have one to take home. Our hope is that every indi-vidual/family will display the piggy bank on its dining table and will “Feed the Pig” by putting pennies (or other change) in it at meal time. On the first and third Sundays of the month, you will be asked to bring your offerings to church and “make a joyful noise unto the Lord” while dumping them into the big, hungry pig in the fellowship hall. Our initial goal is $500 – when we receive that amount, look forward to a very special surprise!

The simple act of sharing our bounty is a commitment to share with others in response to Jesus’ words, “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink…” “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.”

TIME TO “FEED THE PIG”

What is a binkie? It is a homemade blanket that is knitted or crocheted and then given to children who are abused, suffer from chronic diseases or are ex-periencing any type of trauma. Peggy Gentry and other dedicated women have made numerous binkie blankets over the years and are always in need of ma-chine-washable yarn in pastel or bright colors. (Michael’s craft store usually has yarn on sale). Imagine how many binkie blankets could be made if everyone at LCOB would buy even one skein of yarn. Let’s all pitch in and help our chil-dren who are in such desperate need. A basket under the Witness and Service counter (just outside the kitchen) is provided for you donations.
