Page 3: Recovering From Redundancy

Creating Personal Motivation from the

Emotional Fallout• Disbelief• Flight

• Acknowledge the situation• Accept and move forward

Patience – since rushing into action is not the answer (HBR

Essentials)

Page 4: Recovering From Redundancy

A word or two on each of these

Disbelief

• Slow realisation – Finality & Future

• Wake up and nowhere to go• So many things rushing through

my mind• Seeing the fear in others

Page 5: Recovering From Redundancy

Motivations arising from Disbelief

• If I can’t do it for myself do it for others• Start thinking about destinations and

how to get there• Write it down – Lists are not enough –

Create stories• Communicate with everyone• Put together a financial plan

Page 6: Recovering From Redundancy

Flight

• Fear of the future• Uncertainty

• Anger and short tempered – need to protect others from

myself• Unable to consider taking risks

Page 7: Recovering From Redundancy

Motivations arising from ‘Flight’

• It is harder to hide when many are looking for you

• Putting myself out there – ‘slowly and safely’

• Taking small steps and creating small wins

• Play with change• Communicate

Page 8: Recovering From Redundancy

Acknowledge the Situation

• It is a positive step forward but not a leap

• Those colleagues of the past – may well be the past

• Start to create distance but say goodbye

• Build on the small wins

Page 9: Recovering From Redundancy

Motivations arising from Acknowledgement

• I have said ‘goodbye’ now I want to say hello

• Creating a new narrative is fun• The last 30 years have prepared

me for this• Consolidate my learning and

identify the gaps

Page 10: Recovering From Redundancy

Accept and move forward

• It is a semi colon moment in my life

• So what I have learnt and what do I need to learn?

• I continue to set goals• It is a work in progress

Page 11: Recovering From Redundancy

Motivations arising from acceptance

• In 10 years time I want to be able to take my grand daughter

to Disney in Florida • I know its going to be hard work

but I am starting to believe I can get there

• Be a constant learner and keep a journal
