Scholarship Success I am delighted to announce that Luca Cinquini-Steel, James Slater and Henry Wheeler have each been awarded an Academic Scholarship to Rugby School. For Spratton pupils to achieve three Academic Scholarships to Rugby is a superb achievement – huge congratulations to Luca, James and Henry. Addi-tionally, I must say a particular well done to Luca and James who were the top two performing pupils in the entire field of prep school children who entered for Rugby’s Academic Scholarships.
World Book Day It has been a lovely week of events and activities, all in the name of celebrating books and inspiring chil-dren to read more and to love books. It was so wonderful to see children and staff dressed as book char-acters yesterday. Spratton felt something like a fairy tale setting throughout the day, as you never knew who you were going to bump into next. There was much fun and laughter throughout the school. Many thanks to Mrs Lindsay-Smith - Head of English, Mrs Coverdale - School Librarian, and to Mrs Sanchez in the Pre-Prep for all they did to make the week so special for the children. There are many photographs of the children and staff in their book character costumes – do look at the galleries on our website and on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
Church Services The Ash Wednesday Church Services were really lovely occasions. Thank you and very well done to the readers in both services and to Adam Gray for his wonderful cello solo.
CE Mocks Year 8 children are currently undergoing their French oral mocks and then next week their full CE mock exams begin. I wish them all the very best and I simply remind them that the mocks are there as practice before the real thing in June so that they can learn from their mistakes and improve their exam tech-nique.
Sport Well done to the Boys’ 1sts and Girls’ 1sts who went on tour last weekend. As well as playing a high level of hockey and netball (winning three out of four matches between them) I am sure they also had a great time. My thanks, as always, to the members of staff for organising and accompanying the children on these tours.
Well done to our runners in the Maidwell Chase Cross-Country event yesterday. This is a long and gruel-ling race and particular well done to the Junior Boys for winning the team event.
Events Next Week
Tuesday is the Years 3 and 4 netball and football House matches. As always, parents are most welcome to attend.
On Thursday, Year 6 perform ‘The A-Z of Poetry’ at 5.30 pm. This production is always great fun and I know the children have enjoyed working towards it.
Then on Friday we have a visiting Head, Mr Will Phelan, who is the Principal of the Stamford Schools, including Stamford Boys’ School and Stamford High School for Girls. The assembly is at 8.50 am and, as always, parents are welcome to attend and then meet Mr Phelan for coffee after-wards.
Thank you
On Tuesday, Year 8 pupils, Dickon, Zellie, Luca and James, took part in the UK Maths Trust Team Challenge held at Myton School in Warwick. They faced four rounds of fiendish challenges against seventeen other schools and, despite being up against some older pupils, they worked well as a team and finished a creditable 9th. They all enjoyed the chal-lenge and there was plenty of evidence to suggest that maths can be fun!

Mr Kilsby
Mr Mike Kilsby, teacher of drums, talks to Year 8 pupils Luca Cinquini-Steel and Ifeanyi Nwajiaku.
How old were you when you started playing the drums and why did you choose it?
I was 13. I am the 3rd generation of drummers in the Kilsby fami-ly. I have followed in our family tradition of playing in musical theatre, dance bands, brass bands, function bands and I have also played in a circus at one point.
What is your favourite piece of music to play and why?
Seven Days by Sting, it is the first song I played with an odd time signature which is very complex. The structure of the song means you can never relax with the groove. I spent months practising before I mastered the rhythm.
Do you have any hobbies?
I enjoy going to gigs and hill walking. When I have a weekend off, my absolute escape is following the British Touring Cars around the circuits of Great Britain.
Who is your favourite drummer and why?
My favourite drummer is Keith Moon from The Who when he is playing ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’. He was a maverick and mad on stage but very exciting to watch. And, of course, Animal from The Muppets!
Now for the ‘quickfire’ questions:
Favourite holiday destination? Outer Banks, South Carolina, USA
Favourite sport to play or watch? Baseball
Favourite drink? Real Ale
Favourite gadget? Wireless Headphones
Favourite meal? An English breakfast on Sunday morning
Favourite day? Sunday
Favourite television show? Later with Jools Holland
Favourite film? Forrest Gump
Favourite website?
http://www.btcc.net/
Finally, can you describe yourself in 3 words? Rock and Roll

Science Fair 2017 Do you fancy yourself as a You Tuber? Would you like to be a children’s TV presenter? Can you use stop motion animation? Are you a cartoonist or do you love science? If the answer is ‘yes’ to any of those questions, then this is the Science Fair Challenge for you as this year’s task is to:
Why make films?
To explain something really well, you have to understand it. Making a short film focuses your attention on detail and clarity – you have to decide what to put in or leave out, and how to approach a topic to make the most sense of it.
It can be about anything that is science-related and you can make it in any form of film that you want. It must only be between 3-5 min in length.
How to enter:
Make your film, bring it on Wednesday 15th March to Mr C Bradnam on a memory stick so they can be ready to be unveiled in the Science Fair on Thursday 16th March.
If you would like to see some other videos to get some inspiration go to http://scicast.org.uk/films/other/award-winners/
If you are struggling for ideas then https://sciencebob.com has lots of experiments that you can do at home with the science explained!

World Book Day turned into World Book
Week with events spread across the last
five days. On Monday morning the school
was a hive of activity as pupils began the
Poetry Treasure Hunt, searching the school
for poems, including favourites chosen by
Mr Clarke and Mr Dow. Librarians were
kept busy collecting books donated for the
Big Spratton Hall Book Swap and some pupils were tasked
with finding out the favourite children’s books of their teach-
ers and parents. On Wednesday, pupils in Years 2, 3, 4 and 5
enjoyed a visit from children’s author Mark Robson who
talked about a wealth of topics including his time as an RAF
pilot. He also got all pupils up on their feet and doing
taekwondo in time to ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ by Queen!
Thursday was the most exciting day of the week with pupils
up to Year 6 dressed up as their favourite book characters.
Harry Potter was well represented but we also saw many of
David Walliams’ characters taking over the school, along with
Paddington Bear, Pippi Longstocking and a number of Worst
Witches. Assembly was taken by Dumbledore and all pupils
were assigned to a Hogwarts house for the day, whilst a very
imposing Hagrid oversaw the proceedings. Book swapping
took place throughout Thursday and Friday, with pupils enjoy-
ing a World Book Day assembly, courtesy of 5H, this morning.

How wonderfully refreshing it is to be finally arriving and leaving school within daylight hours. Now well into the second half of the Spring Term, with occasional bursts of warm sunshine and a sprinkling of snowdrops around the school grounds, it has occurred to me that the children are, unbelievably, over halfway through their school year!
What a roller coaster of excitement this week has been, with squeals of delighted laughter bubbling out from all around the Pre-Prep department.
On Tuesday in Year 2, covered in puffs of billowing flour and equipped with aprons and chefs’ hats, which they had created themselves, the children whisked up bowlfuls of gloopy, sticky pancake batter. It goes without saying that the highlight for many, was not the cracking of eggs or the licking of lemony fingers, but the precarious balancing of a pancake on the edge of a frying pan before tossing it high into the air! With some enthusiastic flipping, pancakes were landing in rather unexpected and hilarious places! Do have a look at the photographs on the website.
Then, what a day Thursday was! Gripped by World Book Day fever, the children were unrecog-nisable in their story character costumes. From Paddington Bear to Alice in Wonderland, the Very Hungry Caterpillar and the Gruffalo, it was quite a sight to see the children spilling into the playground first thing in the morning. A fun-filled day followed, packed with story themed events and a colourful costume parade, watched by the whole school. The grand finale, a ‘Story Time with a Difference’, saw all the children venturing off to listen to stories in a range of exciting venues, read by different members of Spratton Hall staff. A huge thank you to par-ents for your time and help with organising costumes and to everyone involved for their sup-port in making this day such an exciting and memorable event – we’re already planning our outfits for next year!
Finally, a wonderful end of the week treat came in the form of Year 1’s assembly. The chil-dren took on the role of young explorers from an archaeologists club, who had arrived in Egypt to take part in a special quest! With the addition of some lively songs, they set about solving three im-portant clues to unravel the mystery of the Ancient Egyptians. A fabulous performance which showcased all of their topic work.
Next week, we are holding our Pre-Prep Parent/Teacher Consulta-tions. If you haven’t yet made an appointment online, and you still wish to do so, please do visit https://home.sprattonhall.com/ as slots are available to be booked up until 10am on Tuesday 7th March.
