“Give thanks with a grateful heart, give thanks to the Holy One; give thanks, because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son.” – Henry Smith, “Give Thanks”

Dear Grace Family and Friends:

What are you thankful for? This past month we had been focusing on the faithfulness of God, and how we can respond. One of the ways to respond to God’s faithfulness is to live a life of thanksgiving, often called “thanksliving.”

Thanksliving is the art of living a life of gratitude in action. It is thanking God for the gift of life by living it triumphantly:

It is thanking God for your talents and abilities by accepting them as obligations to be invested for the common good; it is thanking God for all that men and women have done for you by doing things for others; it is thanking God for happiness by striving to make others happy;it is thanking God for beauty by helping to make the world more beautiful;it is thanking God for inspiration by trying to be an inspiration to others.

There are many reasons and many ways to live out our response to God’s faithfulness, preeminent among them is the fact that God has given us His Son Jesus Christ, and to live a life of thanksliving.

But thanksliving is a response, it’s an action—it’s living the life we’ve been given to its fullest. I encourage you as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, that you consider alone and with your loved ones, the sacrificial gift given to you by God, and in response, how you will live out your life in an attitude of thanksliving.

Giving thanks to God for all of you,Pastor Scott

“Enter God’s gates with thanksgiving and God’s courts with praise”

For many of us November flies by. No matter how hard I try it often feels like I’ve just flipped the calendar from October and suddenly it’s Thanksgiving. And when that happens I think I miss something really important.

November 1st, ALL SAINTS’ DAY is one of the oldest celebrations on the Christian Calendar. Traditionally it honored the canonized saints of the church and more modern traditions recognize all of us who serve our Lord as Saints. We reflect on those people living or dead who have influenced our lives and faith journeys. For many of us there are historical figures whose writings and/or actions have shaped our philosophies and theologies. Most of us remember family and friends living and dead who have impacted our lives.

This year we will be celebrating ALL SAINTS’ DAY on November 1st with a noon chapel service and luncheon at Grace. Everyone is welcome and we hope you will come and bring your friends.

And I wonder what would happen if each of us would take a few minutes of each day during this busy month to think of one living person for whom we are grateful and call them, text them, send them a note, a card, or an e-mail, or better yet visit them in person. Tell them how much you appreciate them.

If you do this, I suspect you will bless others and be blessed yourself as well. If each of us just touched one person on each of the 30 days of November think of how much love and gratitude we could share!

Are you in? Will you join the Grace Church gratitude squad by reaching out to one person a day, each day in November?

Would you also consider coming aboard our Congregational Care Team? Could you give a few hours of your time each month to call and/or visit others? Please let me know.

I am so thankful for each of you not only in November but always! Have a truly blessed Thanksgiving!

Last month I had the opportunity to attend the Leadership Institute at Adam Hamilton’s Church of the Resurrection (COR) in Leawood, KS and many of the church conferences that were held at various locations throughout our district. I learned a great deal that hopefully I will be able to apply to our ministry here at Grace UMC. I heard a great deal about different types of small groups that are being held in both the Palisades District of NJ and in the Church of the Resurrection in KS. While I was extremely impressed by the great variety of small groups that are happening at the COR, I also realized that this is a church of over 20,000 people so what they are accomplishing is not probably realistic for our church, although I did learn a great deal that I feel will be useful for us here at Grace. But what I think most impressed me was that while sitting in at various church conference meetings was the wide variety of small group offerings that churches, in many instances smaller in number than ours were offering.

Everything that I have read from Adam Hamilton, Andy Stanley, Max Lucado, and others is that small group ministry is the major factor in growing vital congregations. It is small groups that people grow more deeply in their faith. It is in small groups were meaningful relationships with fellow congregants is developed. It is from small groups that new ideas and insights that move the church forward most often develop. Pastor Scott believes in this concept as well, and I am extremely thankful for those who have faithfully attended our various small group meetings over the past three years, but we simply need more people to get involved! If other churches are doing it then why can’t we?

I believe that the survival of our church may very well depend upon the growth and development of our small group ministries. I am urging you to consider joining a small group, or speaking to us about developing a small group around and interest or concern that you may have. The church is our people and from what I can see the people of our church need to come together in fellowship to further the mission and ministries of our church. It is my fervent hope and prayer that you will truly consider becoming a part of our small group ministry at Grace.

Music MinistryI remember when Halloween décor hit the shelves in October, and Christmas décor filled stores starting in November.  I’ve always been annoyed by this, and don’t we all grumble…at least I’d like to get past Thanksgiving before I start thinking about Christmas.  But, alas, as the retail wars have driven these dates earlier and earlier, we find Santa stuff on the shelves in September, candy corn available in early August, and Back-to-School sales starting in June, when our kids are all still in school!  It’s infuriating! And it occurs to me now, that must have been how all of our Choir members felt when I hauled out the Christmas Concert music in early September! Alas, we are firmly gearing up for the most wondrous season of the year, and I’m excited for the wonderful events ahead of us.  If you’d like to join the choirs for our annual Christmas Concert as a singer this year, please do shoot me an email and let me know, and I’ll be sure to put together a package of sheet music and part recordings for you.  In the meantime, here are some dates to consider:

• November 13th:  our annual Music Family Lunch immediately following our Sunday morning service:  an opportunity for all choir members and their families to come together and enjoy lunch and fellowship prior to our combined rehearsal.

 • December 4th:  our annual Christmas Concert, 4pm, free and open to the public.

Certainly invite friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers.  I believe this could be the must exultant yet under my direction, and I greatly look forward to celebrating this yearly concert with all of our Grace community.

In the meantime, I wish you a blessed November, harvest, and Thanksgiving, and I look forward to all the celebrations, contemplations and fellowship we will share together in the season ahead! With Grace,Kevin

The purpose of Team Vital is “To create a vision for Grace UMC, which builds upon our traditions while embracing the future, in order to cultivate a newfound vitality within our

congregation.”

On November 1st our team met with the other churches that are a part of the Team Vital group

in Madison, NJ to discuss the progress that we have made as a part of our required 6 month

evaluation. To date we are currently in the process of adding an educational piece into our

administrative council meetings in order to further the vision of the church. It is our hope that the

structure that we are presenting at these meetings will then move into the various teams and

committees of the church as well. We have also been able to recruit additional facilitators for our

small group’s ministry in preparation for a church wide study on World Religions beginning the first of

the new year. Our pastors have been reinforcing the vision of the church in their sermons in the hopes

that everyone in the congregation will know the church’s vision and will begin to embrace becoming

an inclusive community that is passionately following Jesus Christ.

Most importantly we have been working hard to try to develop an alternative worship service

geared toward the “Boomer Generation.” Our research has indicated that this is our largest

demographic, and 40% of them are unchurched or nominally churched people. We have also

learned that 43% of all donations made in our country are made from men and women of this

generation. According to research “Boomers” for the most part don’t seem to particularly seem to

care a great deal as to what particular style of music is used at a church service. Most importantly,

perhaps, we have also learned that millennials seem to follow the direction of the “Boomers.” It is our

hope that we may be able to have this service up and running following Easter.

If you should have any questions regarding the direction of Team Vital, I urge you to please

reach out to any of our team members as we continue to thrive to be totally transparent about what

we are currently doing.

The Congregational Care Team at Grace is a ministry of caring to the homebound, sick, and lonely folks in our church and in our community. Our members are trained to visit and call people who might appreciate being contacted by a caring church member. If you or any one you know could benefit from this service please e-mail us at [email protected] or call the church office.

We are also looking to add to our roster of caring people who reach out to others. If you think God might be calling you to give an hour or two of your time each month by serving in this way please e-mail us at [email protected]. We would be so delighted to talk with you about ways you could enhance this wonderful ministry.

SUNDAY MORNING ADULT STUDY CLASS

As we conclude our study of Michael Slaughter’s Book, “Changing The World,” we are excited about our next class adventure, the study of the Gospel of John, chapter by chapter.

We will be referencing several biblical commentaries as we integrate Adam Hamilton’s recent book, “John, The Gospel of Light and Life” and its accompanying DVD.

The gospel of John is unique because it goes beyond reporting Jesus’ life and actions to searching for their significance and encouraging readers to believe in him.

All adults are invited and encouraged to explore this challenging gospel with us. We anticipate lively and relevant discussion and encourage you to participate or simply observe as you feel comfortable.

This class is truly unique. We come from a variety of backgrounds, vocations, and life experiences and celebrate our diversity. We agree to hear each other’s opinions non-judgmentally while respecting and loving each other.

Come! Be a part of our adventure on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. in the Church Parlor. You need not come every week but we encourage you to come as often as you can. If you have any questions, or need more information, call Roger White at 973-227-3984.
