Having been commended by the Ordination Examining Council of our Denomination, Canadian Baptists of Western Canada, Joel Russell-
MacLean will be ordained to the ministry of word and sacrament during the morning worship service on June 17th. A reception will
follow. As Baptists we believe that it is God who chooses some individuals to be leaders within His church. The church does not
pastors rather our responsibility is to discern whether God has called someone to this particular responsibility and office.
Ordination is a recognition that both the local church and our wider family of churches, together, after prayer and examination, have

family of churches, together, after prayer and examination, have determined that a person has been so called by God. Ordination is both a solemn and joyful event as the candidate makes promises to
both God and the people of God to fulfill this calling faithfully. We look forward with much joy and anticipation to this event. The guest
speaker for June 17th will be Barry Holtslander, a long-time friend of both Joel and Heather. Others taking leadership in this service will
include Dr. McKim and Rev. Devin Seghers, our Area Minister.
BIBLE QUIZING
Today we recognize the efforts our Bible Quizzers have put in
over the past year learning the books of Hebrews and Peter. We
have had 5 quizzers from 3 different churches who have met
weekly since September and attended 5 weekend quiz meets. They
have learned scripture and practiced building each other up in
Christian love and each of them has taught me so much. Today we Christian love and each of them has taught me so much. Today we
present certificates to Lisa Lai, Rachel Fan, Nelson Wani, Judy
Wani and Bryn Angus. In addition we have a 1st year bible for Judy
Wani and a special gift for Bryn Angus for completing the full six
year curriculum.
It has been my great privilege to work with the Bible Quizzing
Program for the past 12 years. The expanded eight year
curriculum covers the books of Matthew, Luke, John, Acts,
Romans, I & II Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Romans, I & II Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians,
Colossians, Hebrews, James and I & II Peter, and I have been
through most of it twice. I have been honoured to work with
dozens of teenagers during that time and I love them all more
than I can say. But today I am stepping down from this leadership
position. I ask that all of you would pray diligently for other
leaders within this city and consider if God is leading someone to
step forward to continue the program in First Baptist. I wish
