July Edition From our Principal God bless, Stephen Wilson College Principal Term Two 2019 I recently read a newspaper arcle in relaon to teenage anxiety which stated that 31% of girls, and 13% of boys experience symptoms of anxiety. Lisa Damour, a psychologist who wrote the book ‘Under Pressure’ and was quoted in the arcle, made a few interesng observaons: We’ve lost sight of the fact that a certain amount of stress and anxiety is normal and can be a good thing. If the aim is always to feel at peace, it’s going to lead to disappointment and stress, because it’s unrealisc. Although people don’t enjoy being stretched to new limits, the stress of operang beyond our comfort zones helps us to grow. She gives the example of a student stressed about an upcoming exam. “Have you started studying yet” – “no”. Stress in this case is a useful thing because it’s like a natural alarm system. “When you start studying you’ll feel beer”. Unhealthy stress is when it becomes chronic and the alarm goes off for no reason or it’s out of proporon to events. How parents deal with normal stress and anxiety makes a huge difference. If parents maintain a sense of steady calm, children can be helped to feel like the problem can be managed. When I first started teaching PE to lower Primary students, my philosophy was that I wanted to have young students experiencing physical discomfort and stress at an early age, for two reasons. Firstly, I was aware of the principle above that physical stress results in a physical improvement. And secondly, in an increasingly sedentary society I wanted young children to understand that discomfort is normal and ok. I wanted them to be resilient and comfortable with a reasonable amount of stress, so that they would be well equipped for the challenges of life. Philippians 4: 6,7 reminds us that going to God in prayer is a great response and soluon to stress. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situaon, by prayer and peon, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” We're pleased to welcome Alissa Simmons to the College who will be replacing Mrs Pethybridge whilst on maternity leave for the next year. We wish Mr and Mrs Pethybridge all the best in the coming months and God's blessing on the arrival of their first child. As we head into the mid-year break, I wish all families a peaceful and resul holiday.

Term Two 2019

I recently read a newspaper article in relation to teenage anxiety which stated that 31% of girls, and 13% of boys experience symptoms of anxiety. Lisa Damour, a psychologist who wrote the book ‘Under Pressure’ and was quoted in the article, made a few interesting observations:

• We’ve lost sight of the fact that a certain amount of stress and anxiety is normal and can be a good thing.

• Our culture views any negative emotion as a bad thing, and prizes relaxation and calm above all else.

• If the aim is always to feel at peace, it’s going to lead to disappointment and stress, because it’s unrealistic.

• Although people don’t enjoy being stretched to new limits, the stress of operating beyond our comfort zones helps us to grow.

• She gives the example of a student stressed about an upcoming exam. “Have you started studying yet” – “no”. Stress in this case is a useful thing because it’s like a natural alarm system. “When you start studying you’ll feel better”.

• Unhealthy stress is when it becomes chronic and the alarm goes off for no reason or it’s out of proportion to events.

• How parents deal with normal stress and anxiety makes a huge difference.

Philippians 4: 6,7 reminds us that going to God in prayer is a great response and solution to stress. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

We're pleased to welcome Alissa Simmons to the College who will be replacing Mrs Pethybridge whilst on maternity leave for the next year. We wish Mr and Mrs Pethybridge all the best in the coming months and God's blessing on the arrival of their first child.

As we head into the mid-year break, I wish all families a peaceful and restful holiday.

Parent Teacher Communication HelpsResearch shows that children do better in school when parents talk often with teachers and become involved in the school. Parental involvement is most effective when it is “linked to learning.” The second round of Parent/ Teacher interviews are coming up on Tuesday 23rd July and this is an opportunity for you to talk to teachers about academic progress, possible stumbling blocks to learning or strategies to support learning. I would encourage you to take this opportunity to make an appointment to discuss your student’s learning and possible goals for the future.

The dilemma for you, as parents, is often knowing what questions to ask that get to the ‘nitty gritty’ of your child’s academic strengths, weaknesses and progress without reverting to the standard question of, “How are they going?”

Time at the interviews is short so try and be prepared before the interview to make the best use of the time. Before the interview take the time to review your child’s work, grades, and Report Card and bring the report with you. Make a list of questions to ask.

Below are a list of questions that can be used for all students as you attend Parent Teacher Interviews.

1. Is my child performing at grade level?

2. What data do you have that supports the mark given on the report card?

3. What are my child’s strengths?

4. How can my child do better?

5. Has my child been doing their homework?

6. Is my child organised?

7. Is my child doing their best?

8. Does my child ask for help when it is needed?

9. Does my child get on well with others?

If you have issues that arise during the interview it is important to walk away with an agreed plan. This plan may be some steps that you will take at home, some things that the teacher will implement or an agreed time to meet again when there is more time to outline the plan.

Semester 1 ReportsSemester 1 reports will be sent home during the first week of the holidays. If, for any reason you do not receive this, please contact the College Office at the beginning of Term 3.

Primary Tutoring (Years 3-6)Tutoring will recommence in Week 2 of Term 3 (Wednesday 24th July). Tutoring is available in English and Mathematics. If you would like more information on this please talk to your class teacher.

Exam Block

This week students have been involved in the Semester One Exam Block. It has been pleasing to see students approach the exam sessions with a focussed attitude. The vast majority of students used the time well, studying hard prior to the exam and doing their best to answer the questions in the tests. From my perspective, it was pleasing to see students promoting characteristics of perseverance and diligence within this environment – well done.

Assessment Policy and Academic Integrity

The current Year 11 students are the first cohort to study through the new Senior Assessment system. Earlier in the term, these students participated in an Academic Integrity course which highlighted to students some of the changes to assessment expectations. In an effort to develop a fairer system for all students across Queensland, schools are required to provide stronger policies around submitting assignments and participating in examinations. Examples of some of the changes include;

• Authentication of student work – teachers need to be more proactive in ensuring student assignments are their own work. This may include;

o Ensuring some of the assignment work is completed in class.

o Establishing check points prior to the assignment due date to check student’s progress and development of the assignment.

o Students submitting a draft.o Teachers interviewing a student about

their assignment to verify it is their own work.

• Ensuring all students complete a test at the same time. The days of allowing a student to do a test on another day due to absence is no longer

an option under the new system.

o If a student has a valid reason for missing a test (i.e. medical certificate) the student will be required to sit a different exam to the other students on another day.

o If a student does not have a valid reason (e.g. going on holidays, slept in etc.) for missing the test, they will not be given an opportunity to complete the test and will receive a ‘NR’ (Not Rated) for that semester. In Year 11 this will mean they will not receive a QCE credit point for that semester and in Year 12, they will not receive a result for that subject.

• Teachers have been provided with guidelines around drafting. For example;

o Teachers are only allowed to provide feedback on one draft.

o When providing feedback on a draft, teachers may not introduce new ideas, language or research to improve the quality of the student response, because feedback on a draft must not compromise the authenticity of student work.

Although the changes to assessment expectations currently effect Year 11 students, the College will also need to ensure that students in Year 7 – 10 are well prepared for Senior Assessment. Changes to the College Assessment Policy for 2020 will enhance academic integrity and better prepare students for assessment in Year 11 & 12.

Reporting

During the holidays, parents will receive an academic report of their student’s progress. Each subject will provide information on their academic ability, work ethic, behaviour and organisation. Please take the time to read through the report with your student – look for areas that require improvement, but also areas you can encourage them for their work this semester. For more specific feedback on your student’s progress, please make an appointment with the relevant teacher during the Parent-Teacher Interviews scheduled for Tuesday 23rd July.

Prayer Points

Devotion

There are times in life when God seems distant. We pray but feel abandoned, at the mercy of our circumstances, afraid and hopeless. Paul was no different. He’d longed for an opportunity to preach in Rome and was on his way there when a hurricane struck his ship, plunging everyone into despair. Paul had not only foreseen the loss of the vessel, its crew and cargo, but his ‘own life also.’ (Acts 27:10 NIV)

But his warning was disregarded by the captain, the pilot, and the centurion in charge of him. Consequently Paul and 276 fellow passengers were placed in a life-threatening crisis, and there was nothing he could do about it. Terrified, he and his companions declared, ‘We finally gave up all hope of being saved!’

After fourteen days at sea without sun or stars to guide them, and just when the hurricane was

fiercest, God sent an angel to Paul. ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.’ (Acts 27:24 NIV) They were cold, soaked, and hungry when their ship finally ran aground on an island south of Italy. Every circumstance pointed to tragedy and the death of Paul’s dream of preaching in Rome.

However, when the sun rose on the island of Malta next morning, it became clear that God had piloted them through the storm to the exact destination He had planned for them. And Paul ended up declaring God’s Word before Caesar in Rome. So take courage—you’ll get through this storm!

You'll get through this storm

‘When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved.’

Acts 27:20 NIV

We pray that you all have a restful mid year break.

Boarding News

Throughout this Term the Boarders have enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles. This gave them the opportunity to work together as a group and encourage each other as well as learning patience and endurance.

Joshua, Angus and Toby received a revelation of how farming tractors have changed over the past sixty years! When asked which was their favourite tractor they posed for a photo on what they would like to drive.

Our weekend boys enjoyed a visit to the Pioneer Park Museum.

Chaplaincy News

Karl PumpaChaplain

Here’s a little bit of what’s been going on chaplaincy-wise at our school:

Chapel

Next term we will be looking at “The Big Story of the Bible”. Our aim is to help the students from P-12 understand that the bible is one big story that keeps pointing to Jesus. It’s also a story that we find ourselves in too. Parents are welcome to attend chapel each Wednesday from 12:15-1:00pm in the MPC (with the exception of week 2 when we will not have Chapel due to Photo Day).

God’s FRIENDS

The God’s FRIENDS program with the Prep classes will be drawing to a close next week. We’ve had a great time learning about the way God made us. He made us to be good friends to each other. He made us to have feelings and still make good choices even when we feel bad.

This term Mr Wilson and I have been talking on the theme of “What is a Christian?” I handled the topics of “Christians pursue holiness” and “Christians grow in godliness”. In the latter talk I used the metaphor of a fruit tree to talk about what it looks like when Christians grow. The Bible in Galatians Chapter 5, the Apostle Paul says that the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. When we see these things increasing in a Christians’ life, we know they are growing.
