ANNIVERSARIES

Wayne Bolton completed a gruelling 6000 km cycle to ‘join’19 SANParks around SA, because we have only One Land, we need to Love It!

He started at the Kruger Park and cycled gate to gate to all 19 of the National Parks in South Africa. His aim was to raise awareness of, and funds for rhino anti-poaching. These magnificent creatures have survived 1000’s of years but now humans are destroying it. We have to take care of our environment otherwise we will all die.

In searing December / January heat of 53° - 59° Wayne cycled through the desert areas – 480km on a corrugated gravel road. He finished at Addo and was given a hero’s welcome by the Rangers and Kingsley Holgate.

Wayne’s wife ran the support team, and his children cycled some of the way with him. His parents and father in law were also part of the support team, having done a cycle repair course before the trip so that they could assist with any issues with the bicycles.

They raised R140 000 for SANParks and CARE FOR WILD AFRICA. The rangers in the SANParks are constantly under threat of contact with poachers. The media coverage return was estimated at R2 million.

Wayne said he learned many lessons along the way: We have one land – we need to love it We are running out of time – elephants face extinction soon In tough times - keep moving forward Self-Discipline is essential to success and is underrated Where the mind leads – the body will follow Be positive Be prepared for the worst, but hope for the best Teamwork is essential Keep eye on the goal line – but the daily grind is towards small targets No need to be normal. We must stretch ourselves to do “extra” things = extraordinary Integrity matters Responsible citizenship – make a difference Start and finish with faith and courage – have you got it?

Wayne had a tent on the bike but he did not need to use it once, as accommodation was provided by amazing people along the way. Each morning he returned to the spot where he had stopped the night before to start the day. He never once thought of giving up – he says he moaned a bit along the way but his internal and external motivation kept him going.

Knitting Wool needed Thandi Ndzombane has identified a group of ladies who love knitting! They get together to chat, and like to keep their hands busy doing something useful.

As the Dora Nginza Clinic for children with Down’s Syndrome is always in need of clothing, Thandi asked them if they would like to knit for these children.

They were very pleased to be able to help! However, as money is always an issue, they cannot afford wool.

Please would you all go through your cupboards, and bring all those unused balls of wool taking up space in your closets, to Rotary, for these ladies. You will be both clearing your cupboards and doing a good deed!

Thanks, Chanté!
