As educators we, too, have a critical impact on the decisions our children make as illustrated by the following true story: There was once a Jew who lived in Baltimore, Maryland, and came to America in the 1920s. For many years he was the chairman of the Board of Ner Israel Rabbinical College. He was a talmid of Rav Baruch Ber Leibowitz, " the Kaminetzer Rosh Hayeshiva, and learned under him in Kaminetz. When this gentleman came to Baltimore in the 1920s, it was almost impossible to make a living without working on Shabbos. Like so many immigrants, he faced the great test of, “If you do not come in on Saturday, do not come in on Monday.” He told the story that at one point he was on the verge of taking such a job. However, he was stopped when the image of his Rebbe, Rav Baruch Ber Leibowitz, " flashed before his eyes. He realized that he could not do this to his Rebbe. He never wavered again and remained a steadfast Jew hallmarked by his Yiras Shamayim for all of his 101 years. Every time we speak or act, we must ask ourselves, whom do we want our children to see before their eyes? Good Shabbos, Mrs. Katz.

LEARNING TORAH, LOVING TORAH, LIVING TORAH

Dear Parents and Friends,

We have been reading the Parshios

regarding Yosef Hazadik and his trials and

tribulations in Mitzraim. One of the

incidents relayed to us in the Torah is his

situation with the wife of Potiphar.

Although he was only 17 years old, Yosef

was able to extricate himself from

temptation as was incumbent upon the

young man that he was.

The Talmud teaches us that when the test

of Potiphar’s wife presented itself, Yosef

had to make a choice. He chose to do the

right thing. Why was he able to do so?

Because when it came time for him to

make a decision, he saw the vision of his

father’s face in the window and knew he

only had one choice – the right choice.

Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky " expounds

on this explanation. He explains that this

image worked only because Yosef

respected and saw his father, Yaakov

Avinu, as a role model to emulate. Rav

Yaakov Kamenetsky, " uses the word

“currency”. A father must have “currency”

with his son. The son must ascribe value to

the relationship with his father to make

correct choices. Parents are the mirrors

for what our children see when they look

at their own reflections. We, as parents,

have an awesome responsibility. When

our children are faced with the

vicissitudes of life which bring them to

difficult places of decision making, what

image of their parents will they see?

We know what we want them to see, we

know what they should see, but what do

they actually see?

The concept of conjuring up an image of

emulation is not limited to parents. As

educators we, too, have a critical impact

on the decisions our children make as

illustrated by the following true story:

There was once a Jew who lived in Baltimore,

Maryland, and came to America in the

1920s. For many years he was the chairman

of the Board of Ner Israel Rabbinical College.

He was a talmid of Rav Baruch Ber Leibowitz,

" the Kaminetzer Rosh Hayeshiva, and

learned under him in Kaminetz. When this

gentleman came to Baltimore in the 1920s,

it was almost impossible to make a living

without working on Shabbos. Like so many

immigrants, he faced the great test of, “If you

do not come in on Saturday, do not come in

on Monday.” He told the story that at one

point he was on the verge of taking such a job.

However, he was stopped when the image of

his Rebbe, Rav Baruch Ber Leibowitz, "

flashed before his eyes. He realized that he

could not do this to his Rebbe. He never

wavered again and remained a steadfast Jew

hallmarked by his Yiras Shamayim for all of

his 101 years.

Every time we speak or act, we must ask

ourselves, whom do we want our children

to see before their eyes?

Good Shabbos,

Mrs. Katz.
