FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Families

Term 3 has started in a flurry with students from our Sister School in Japan arriving last Thursday evening. We conducted a welcome assembly on Friday and it was terrific to see our school community create such a lovely atmosphere in which to receive our visitors. As usual, the music provided, this time by Gajanan Frost, was a highlight and augurs extremely well for the quality of our musical production, “Spectrum”, later this term.

Over the weekend, several staff gave up their time to Pedal Prix and GovHack – an initiative that encourages young people to use government data to create an app that might be useful to the general public – and it is fantastic to see our staff continue to go above and beyond what could reasonably be expected to support a myriad of activities for our students.

We are continuing to work on timetable reform and a detailed proposal will be published to families separately to this newsletter. Please keep an eye out for that document and return any feedback you may have to the school via the email address provided.

Two further visits from people related to the STEM build occurred towards the end of last term. One was from the person who does all the costing and makes sure the money available will actually cover the plans that have been made; the other was from the architect to go over final-ish plans. We are still well on track in terms of both of these elements of the process and it looks like work will begin at the start of Term 4.

Students are voting this week on the long-term names of our Communities. The SRC decided that Communities would be called Buganditj names of native animals. Students have been give ten options and Community Leaders will draw from a hat one of the five most popular after voting has occurred. We will be able to let the school community know the outcome in the next newsletter.

In the meantime, the busy-ness of school

life will continue. Please remember that the

Homework Club is available Monday-

Thursday after school until 5pm as we

continue to support students in their

academic pursuits.

NAIDOC WEEK It was wonderful to be able to celebrate NAIDOC Week due to this important event falling within the school term. Grant High School students attended a number of activities throughout the week including: - the NAIDOC Awards held at Pangula Mannamurna - the inaugural Bochara Football Carnival - the launch of Seasons of Boandik Country - the NAIDOC Community Day - the first ever Bunganditj language workshop at GHS BOCHARA Football Carnival The sun shone brightly on the Vansittart Park oval, as the first ever Bochara Football Cup Carnival was held in celebration of NAIDOC Week.

Organised by the amazing Cody Millard along with a dedicated team of community members, local businesses and neighbouring organisations, this fantastic event was an opportunity for our young people to get active and get dirty while playing our beloved national game.

The game featured a team from Berrin (Mount Gambier) and a team from Winda Mara in Heywood, who travelled over the border to join our community for the first time in a football game. The atmosphere was bright, energetic and friendly as people called out encouragement to the players on the field. Players as young as 8 years of age to more senior players of 16 years joined together and supported each other to have a great time.

Berrin won the cup with a score of 5 goals and 9 points to Winda Mara with 3 goals and 8 points.

The community thanks the incredible effort of Cody Millard and those who supported her to make this a wonderful day, including big thanks to Mark Lovett from the Mount Gambier City Council and UniSA. We also thank Winda Mara for coming over for the start of an outstanding annual event. This could not have happened without the community coming together, with Community Connect, Centacare, Kalparrin, SAASTA, North Gambier Football Grounds, Sportscene as just a few of the organisations that have helped make this an outstanding community event. Also special thanks to Aunty Penny and Aunty Val, Uncle Steven Wanganeen, and Uncle Michael Bell, Aunty Val Lovett and Aunty Laura Bell for their support and encouragement.

Launch of Seasons of Boandik Country It was in a cosy corner of Mount Gambier Library, against a backdrop of beautiful native flora, that the book Seasons of Boandik Country was launched on Tuesday the 4th of July. Seasons of Boandik Country is a collection of poems and felted artworks depicting the seasonal changes in the South East. This outstanding result of collaboration between Grant High School students and community is testimony to the enthusiasm and support of these wonderful people. Boandik woman and Bunganditj teacher Brooke Joy read the poems in Bunganditj language, followed by the English translations, which were read by the students. We are very proud to be part of a wonderful community, which brings richness of learning to the lives of our students. Seasons of Boandik Country is available for purchase through the online publisher Blurb. If you are interested in purchasing a copy, please contact Sarah McCarthy on 8726 3136. NAIDOC Community Day On Wednesday the 5th of July Grant High School students delivered a needle felting workshop for children from local primary schools and kindergartens at the Pangula Mannamurna NAIDOC Community Day. The student authors and artists of Seasons of Boandik Country showed the children how to create a needle felted art work using cookie cutters as templates, and for the entire 2 hours were held captive by tens of enthusiastic participants. Bunganditj Language Workshop It was a lovely experience, as our students demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and community engagement. On Thursday the 6th of July Boandik Elder Aunty Michelle Jaqueline-Furr and her daughter Brooke Joy came to Grant High School to deliver the first ever Bunganditj language familiarisation workshop to the students of 8SA. The students learned basic greetings as well as food and drink items, and engaged in a café-style role play, which was a lot of fun. Students also conducted a tour of the school, with the class divided in two groups, who each took our guests for a walk to see where future Bunganditj language signage could go. The list of locations and words has been submitted for community consultation, so stay posted for this exciting development to our school! Sarah McCarthy, AET

MEALS ON WHEELS TERM 3 GOVHACK 13 Grant High School students took part in GovHack Open Data Competition, a 46-hour event that promotes the marketing of data collected by local, state and federal governments, from the 28th-30th of July at the Mount Gambier Library.

The students competed with adults and teenagers from across the southeast in a public event that embraces the ideals of collabora-tion and STEM, both of which are strongly promoted within the school.

Competitors in the youth and adult ‘nodes’ are challenged to cre-ate innovative concepts that integrate data collected by govern-ments and market it in a video that goes for no longer than 3 minutes.

At the event, Grant High School students formed four teams in the youth competition and developed ideas and shared their skills sets to complete the task.

On the final night of the event, Braydon Eberhard was awarded the Spirit of GovHack in the Mount Gambier youth node as well as overall. The award acknowledges competitors who embody the spirit of the event. Braydon was acknowledged by organisers for the way he helped other teams to use certain software. As a re-sult, he has been invited to attend an event in Adelaide later in the year.

Competitors included: Hayden Pawelski, Mason Bartlett, Dane Heemskerk, Ethan Little, Brodie Jackson, Tyler Ackland, Joel Wil-liamson, Everton Ashcroft, Declan Turner, Tyson van Dyk, Made-line Hosking, Braydon Rantall, and Braydon Eberhard.

The students competed well, developed interesting concepts, and spent a weekend eating pizza, pouring tea, and strengthening friendships.

The competition is run yearly and is open to all students that wish to participate, as well as the public.

Students are encouraged to speak with their teachers, particularly

Mr McCulloch and Mr Goodfellow, if they would like to participate

next year.

KO OPEN BOYS HOCKEY PEDAL PRIX

On Monday of Week 2 the Open Boys Hockey team played St. Martin's Lutheran College for a place in the State Finals to be played in Adelaide (in Week 5). From the start, the boys were able to press forward to lock the ball in their attacking half, however, a strong St. Martin's defence were able to prevent our forwards having space for a shot-on-goal. Connor Bartlett finally broke the deadlock with a beautiful flick from a short corner. The boys were awarded a second short before half-time, with Bartlett finishing off a deceptive pass from Brady Cooper to take the lead 2-0. Some structural changes in the second half meant the team found more space in attack. Rylan Ward controlled the ball through the midfield, which lead to a number of chances on goal, particularly from Aiden Cameron and Angus Widdison. Tim Boxall was eventu-ally rewarded for his persistence on the ball, scoring an unlikely goal from congestion. St. Martin's found a second gear late in the game, putting the defensive line under pressure on numerous occasions. With some excellent defensive leadership from Connor Cooper, and some hard-running from Jarrod McGregor, the boys were able to limit St. Martins to one goal. Bartlett capped off his hat-trick with a stunning tomahawk late in the game to seal a 4-1 victory. Adam Dunn, Hockey Teacher

At the end of Week 8, Term 2, our pedal prix teams travelled to Adelaide to compete in the 3rd race of the HPV (Human Powered Vehicle) super series. Both teams raced really well with “Fluro Is The New Black” finishing 8th in category and 24th overall and “Green Hornet” finishing 26th in category and 71st overall. Both teams also improved their number of laps from last year. “Fluro Is The New Black” improved by two laps and “Green Hornet” improved by ten laps. Prior to the race, the students trained and organised for longer stints in the trike, which improved the number of laps and decreased the time in the pit stop. All students enjoyed the race and the trip to Adelaide and are now preparing for the next race in Adelaide commencing on the 30th of July. Holly Baldock, Pedal Prix team member
