Dear Parents and Carers

Huge thanks to everyone who supported our Wear Something Pink day this week in return for donations of sanitary products and toiletries for the young women of Kibera. The Lunchbowl charity are thrilled with these and the significant funds - yet to be counted at the time of writing - that Mrs Abbes-Muslia’s tutor group, 10EY, have once again raised this year with a whole week of activities. It has been a pleasure to see how many students have applied for the relaunched Junior Leadership Team - there is still time for students in Years 7-10 to submit a short statement to Miss Saul. Year 11 have received their Mock grades this week and it was great to see the mature and engaged way in which they did so. We all have high hopes for this terrific year group. Over the next few months, we will do everything we can to ensure that we both support them to manage and mitigate the understandable anxieties that emerge at this stage, but also to ensure that

they seize this moment to aim as high as they can and to have the confidence and self- belief that they have nothing to lose in doing so. Year 13 are the next group to receive their results and we look forward to welcoming parents to our parents’ evening next week. Mobile Phones As I have indicated before, we keep our mobile policy under close review. We are concerned that students are increasingly phoning or texting their parents asking them to come and collect them if they are unwell, or to contact the school if something has happened about which they are unhappy, which results in a phone call or an immediate visit from an anxious parent. We would be very grateful if you could reiterate that should your child feel unwell they must report to Student Services where a phone call will then be made to a parent as necessary and, should they be upset about anything at school, their tutor, Head of Year, or indeed any teacher that they trust will listen and discuss the issue with them, before contacting home if necessary. Thank you for your support. Epsom Traffic The centre of Epsom is frequently gridlocked at the moment due to the numerous roadworks and road closures that have appeared over the last month or so. We know that this has led to buses being late, and whilst we know that there is nothing students can do about the timing of public transport, we would be grateful, if you do drive your child to school, that you leave more time for your journey whilst these works are ongoing. We have also reiterated to all the students that the Dorking Road/High Street is particularly dangerous at present with all the roadworks and that the temptation to cross through the stationary traffic must be avoided by using the designated crossings at all times. Unauthorised Absence I am regularly asked to authorise holidays by parents during term time. I am afraid that I cannot authorise any absence except that linked to an educational activity, such as participation in a sporting event, a performance, or a music or drama exam. It is incumbent upon me to remind you that parents who choose to remove their children for a holiday during term time, which has not been authorised, are liable for a penalty notice for each child. Good attendance really matters; research has shown that students with 90% attendance or less generally achieve a grade lower at GCSE than those with attendance of higher than 90% attendance. I am very grateful for your support in ensuring your child attends school punctually and regularly. Reporting Absence – Please can I ask you to ensure that student absence is reported directly to our Attendance Officer, Mrs Day, on the dedicated student absence line 01372 845469. Our Attendance Policy can be viewed via the Website. Have a lovely weekend Ros Allen @RoseberyHT

Miss C Keoshgerian, KS3 English Coordinator & Literacy Lead

This month marks the 200th anniversary of the publication of

Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’, still today a strange and disturbing

novel. It is a gripping read for anyone in the mood for a peculiar

kind of gothic horror story, but best suited to readers over 16

years.

For younger readers, the novel ‘Strange Star’ by Emma Carroll

offers a compelling story involving Mary Shelley, set at the time

she wrote ‘Frankenstein’. Events are seen through the eyes of a

young boy and girl, creating a lively and absorbing mystery.
