What's new from AIHW MyHospitals reporting platform This platform combines the existing AIHW hospital pages with the external MyHospitals website, bringing together national, state and territory, local hospital network and individual hospital data in one location.

In addition two new reports have been released on the reporting platform incorporating national, state and territory and hospital level data (where available):

Emergency department care 2018-19 In 2018─19:

• 8 million emergency department presentations

• 71% of patients seen on time overall

• 70% of emergency department visits were completed within 4 hours

Elective surgery waiting times 2018-19 In 2018─19:

• 758,000 patients were admitted from public hospital waiting lists

• 50% of patients waited at least 41 days for admission from elective surgery waiting lists

Indigenous Australians waited longer for admission from elective surgery waiting lists than Non-Indigenous Australians.

National asthma indicators – an interactive overview This web report provides interactive data displays on the national asthma indicators published in the National Asthma Strategy 2018 by the National Asthma Council (National Asthma Strategy).

The indicators provide insights on how common asthma is in Australia; asthma related deaths, hospital visits and general practice encounters; the use of asthma action plans, impact of asthma on quality of life, and the cost of asthma to the Australian healthcare system.

• In 2017─18, 23% of people with asthma said it had interfered with daily activity 2 or more times in the past month.

• In 2017─18, 1 in 9 Australians (11%) had asthma—that’s 2.7 million people.

• In 2015─16, asthma cost the Australian health system an estimated $770 million

Search Tip: Always search more than one database To do a comprehensive search, always perform your search in more than one database.

Each database indexes different journals, so start with the most relevant database for your discipline, then do an equivalent search in the next relevant database.

See How to choose the right database on the Library website for help.

Library Training: Session times for January/February 2020 Sessions are complete for 2019; book now for 2020.

BOOKS

[online] Diagnosing and caring for the child with autism spectrum disorder: a practical guide for the primary care provider / Tina Iyama-Kurtycz. Springer, 2020. This unique resource is designed to be a

practical, user-friendly guide for pediatricians, primary care providers, and all healthcare providers who work with children with autism spectrum disorder.

Diagnosing and Caring for the Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder offers state-of-the art instruction to clinicians on how to recognize, diagnose and assist children with autism spectrum disorders, from early in life to transition to adulthood. This book will also delve into how to support pediatric patients by working with families, and discuss how to best interact with and support these families.

The book opens with a comprehensive introduction of ASD and obstacles to diagnosis and common myths.

Section Two is devoted to the early recognition of atypical development and reviews the steps in diagnosing autism, including the evaluation, the diagnostic visit, the developmental exam, and the discussion of findings with parents.

Section Three covers treatment and interventions for the autism spectrum and includes a discussion on alternative therapies and how to direct parents toward evidence-based or plausible treatments.

Sections Four and Five addresses special topics that are relevant to the PCP’s or pediatrician’s long-term relationship with families, including chapters on anxiety, parents, challenging behaviors and common scenarios that occur across childhood for those who have ASD.

Later chapters delve more deeply into providing informed, sensitive care for patients with intersecting identities, and discusses how gender identity and cultural perspective and attitudes can impact the pediatric patient with ASD.

[online] Imaging in pediatric pulmonology / Robert H. Cleveland, Edward Y. Lee, editors. 2nd ed. Springer, 2020. This fully updated second edition is a definitive guide to imaging and differential diagnosis for pediatric pulmonary diseases and disorders.

This edition is fully updated to include coverage of the latest imaging and diagnostic techniques, modalities, and best practices. Beginning with clinical algorithms, chapters provide a framework for clinical diagnosis. This image-based text presents a comprehensive, multi-modality approach, with an emphasis on plain film and cross-sectional imaging.

The imaging sections, including a new chapter on pediatric thoracic MRI, are correlated with pathology and clinical findings to help readers learn what the modality of choice can enable them to see.

This information and guidance is applied directly to diseases and disorders seen in everyday practice, including pleural effusion, focal lung disorders, pulmonary hypertension, cystic fibrosis, and asthma, as well as a new chapter on pediatric pulmonary embolism. In addition, a new chapter on the genetics of pediatric lung disorders has been added.

This essential guide gives pediatric pulmonologists and radiologists the information to identify the differentials by symptom complex, accordingly determine what test would be effective, how to proceed, and to essentially provide the best care for their patients.

[online] Nursing skills for children and young people's mental health / editor, Laurence Baldwin. Springer, 2020. Whilst other books have chiefly focused on mental health conditions and treatments, this book moves away from this formulaic approach and considers

what children and youth themselves need most from health professionals. It shows why nursing skills are among the most precious values for patients.

This focus on therapeutic relationships, establishing trust-based forms of nursing, and empowering children and young people to develop into healthy and resilient young adults has largely been neglected, despite the feedback from those who urgently need help but often struggle to find it, or are wary of seeking help and reluctant to engage.

[online] Pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome: a clinical guide / Steven L. Shein, Alexander T. Rotta, editors. Springer, 2020. This book provides a concise yet comprehensive overview of pediatric

acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS).

The text reviews the emerging science behind the new PARDS definition; explores epidemiology, pathobiology, etiologies, and risk factors; reviews state-of-the-art treatment modalities and strategies; and discusses clinical outcomes.

Written by experts in the field, this is a valuable resource for clinicians and practitioners who specialize in pediatric critical care.

[online] Pediatric rhinosinusitis / Hassan H. Ramadan, Fuad M. Baroody, editors. Springer, 2020. The volume provides a comprehensive, up-to-date and exhaustive review of pediatric rhinosinusitis for clinicians, surgeons, researchers, advanced care

providers as well as emergency personnel.

It provides information regarding pathophysiology of sinusitis, and how to distinguish between the differential diagnoses of a child with a runny nose. It also utilizes current evidence-based guidelines and consensus statements to clarify this condition to the physician and discusses available medical and surgical treatment.

Authored by clinicians with long-time expertise with this disease, Pediatric Rhinosinusitis also reviews definitions, burden of disease, microbiology and pathophysiology of the disease; role of adenoids, allergy and asthma as co-morbid conditions; comprehensive medical management; and the role of topical treatment.

It also covers the latest advancements in new treatments such as drug-eluting stents; comprehensive surgical management; and complications of rhinosinusitis.

[online] Traumatic dental injuries in children: a clinical guide to management and prevention / Rebecca L. Slayton, Elizabeth A. Palmer. Springer, 2020. This book is a clinical guide to the prevention and management of

traumatic dental injuries, including crown and root fractures and luxation injuries, in children of all ages.

Readers will find clear descriptions of the challenges posed by the pediatric population, the evaluation of injuries, diagnosis, management, and follow-up. Whenever available, evidence-based guidelines are used to inform clinicians of the most appropriate care for each type of injury.

A holistic approach is adopted, taking into account the child's developmental stage and ability to tolerate the proposed treatment. When indicated, more advanced forms of behavior guidance are discussed to enable the delivery of safe and effective care that will allow the best outcome to be achieved.

Often, traumatic dental injuries result in sequelae that compromise the health of the developing permanent teeth. These sequelae and appropriate treatment options are described along with innovative approaches designed to preserve bone and maximize future treatment possibilities. The book will be a valuable asset for both pediatric and general dentists.
