A GCSE in a fortnight • You may think you’ve got forever BUT look at how many hours of

lessons you actually have over two years:

Options: 5 hours every two weeks (8 days per subject)

Core: English 7 hours every two weeks (10 days)

Maths 6 hours every two weeks (9 days)

Science 8 hours every two weeks (12 days)

• Due to time constraints you will often only cover each topic once.

• Learning it first time around is the key to successful revision and exam results.

Impact

• Our tracking system will ensure that students progress is measured accurately and regularly.

• Those students identified as needing extra help made significant progress from mock results to actual results.

• Intervention has been taking place in Key Stage 3 and this will support students starting Key Stage 4.

Page 13: FRAM KEY STAGE 4 INFORMATION EVENING 2014. Key Stage 4 Information Evening 2014 Programme Welcome: Mr Edwards (Director of Learning – Key Stage 4)

Information

• Throughout Key Stage 4 subject teachers enter data about students’ progress.

• This information is entered into our new tracking system “Go 4 Schools” which can then be used to analyse pupils’ progress.

• The Raising Attainment Group meets fortnightly to discuss the data and individuals progress in core subjects.

Learning How to Revise

The Visual Learner

If you are a visual learner, try these techniques:

• Write key facts on different colour cards (eg grouped in to topics) – you can then lay them out in front of yourself.

• Aim to visualise what you are learning – sit back and try to see a picture of the ideas or information.

• Write down important facts on Post-it notes and stick them in key places! E.g. Mirror, TV etc.

• Use mind maps, pictures, cartoon story boards, photos & diagrams to summarise information.

• Use illustrated books from the library.

• Search the internet for interactive learning sites that feature diagrams and pictures.

Page 54: FRAM KEY STAGE 4 INFORMATION EVENING 2014. Key Stage 4 Information Evening 2014 Programme Welcome: Mr Edwards (Director of Learning – Key Stage 4)

Key Stage 4 Information Evening 2014

Learning How to Revise

Auditory Learner.

If you are an auditory learner, try these techniques:

• Summarise the topic in your own words, talking through the key themes as you do so.

• Read notes out loud as you go through them – rehearse delivering your notes as a speech.

• Make mp3 files or cds of the information and play them back to yourself.

• Explain the subject to other people.

• Put the information to a famous tune and sing it back yourself. Or search for these on youtube!

Key Stage 4 Information Evening 2014

Learning How to Revise

Kinaesthetic LearnersIf you are a kinaesthetic learner, try these techniques:

• Move around as you learn. This could be something simple like pacing up and down in your room.

• Retype the information on a computer into a colour, font and print size that you like.

• Write down the facts on to key facts cards. You can shuffle them like a pack of cards and keep reading them, lay them down in order etc.

• When you are working at home give yourself ‘kinaesthetic breaks’, e.g. jogging, cooking.

• Create big bold mind maps that allow you to express the information freely.

Learning How to Revise

The Rounded LearnerIt may help to choose techniques for revision according to your learning style.

The long term goal should be to develop the style(s) you are not so strong at.

You will then become a rounded learner.

Work Experience

What is Work Experience?

A Work Experience Placement is primarily an educational activity which gives students an insight in to the world of work over a 1 week period during their last 2 years of compulsory education.

Page 59: FRAM KEY STAGE 4 INFORMATION EVENING 2014. Key Stage 4 Information Evening 2014 Programme Welcome: Mr Edwards (Director of Learning – Key Stage 4)

Key Stage 4 Information Evening 2014

Work Experience

Students benefit from Work Experience Placements by having the opportunity to develop:• More confidence• Improved self esteem• Ability to communicate with adults• Improved timekeeping• Additional practical work skills• Team working• Problem Solving skills

Page 60: FRAM KEY STAGE 4 INFORMATION EVENING 2014. Key Stage 4 Information Evening 2014 Programme Welcome: Mr Edwards (Director of Learning – Key Stage 4)

Key Stage 4 Information Evening 2014

Work Experience

What sort of work is available?• More or less any placement is available – so long as the necessary

Insurance and Health and Safety checks are in place.

• As these take a great deal of time to do, it is best to start the process as soon as possible, this half term for preference. It is strongly advised that students find their own placements.

• There are lists of previous year’s placements available as a starting point for the search. Please see Mr Roe during the school day for details.

• If a student is not able to generate their own placement for whatever reason, then a list of available jobs is published at the start of the summer term.

• Students that don’t get a placement will spend the week in school.

How can Parents/Carers help?• Start to think now what placement your son/daughter

would like to have.• Encourage students to approach employers now to see if

they would be able to carry out a work experience.• Complete the Parental Consent form by December 2014,

these will be issued to students in the next few weeks.• Ensure Self Generated forms are completed by employers

and returned to school by January 2015.
