Third Sunday of Lent (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection

Very often when we hear of accidents and disasters, we tend to think

that they are a sign of punishment. Let us ask ourselves, however, if it is

reasonable to think that the victims were greater sinners than we are, as

the Lord asks in today’s gospel. Instead of judging others, let us look at

our own selves, identify our sins and shortcomings and repent that we

may not perish.

In the parable of the fig tree that has not produced fruit, the gardener

asks for time to cultivate and fertilize it to see if it will bear fruit before

cutting it down. The tree represents our soul. Each year God, in his mercy,

grants us this season of Lent, that we may “cultivate and fertilize it” in the

hope that we will produce fruit.

Tomorrow the Church celebrates the solemnity of the Annunciation of

the Lord. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (Jn 1, 14)

precisely so that we may produce fruit in abundance. Let us ask our

Blessed Mother to pray for us, that we may say yes to God as she did and

yield an abundant harvest. God bless you!

Fr. Luis

PS. Thank you so much for your participation in the ABCD campaign. We are $27,000 away to reaching our goal.

nuestra cosecha sea abundante. Que Dios los bendiga.

P. Luis

Renewing our hearts As we continue on our desert road, the Lord appears to us as He

did to Moses and calls us from a place as amazing as the burning

bush. From that place He invites us to remove our shoes, that is, to

set aside all that makes us feel secure, the pride that tells us we

can do anything, the conceit that comes with this idea, and to make

ourselves “slaves” belonging to this God Who gives us everything

and Who sanctifies everything for our happiness and good.

This is what Pope Francis tells us by reminding us that “the path

to Easter demands that we renew our faces and hearts as

Christians through repentance, conversion and forgiveness…”

especially for our sins of omission, which don’t allow us to share our

time, our talent and our money with those who, like the Israelites in

the desert, hunger and thirst for God.

(To be continued)

Holy Lives / Vidas Santas VENERABLE ELISABETH MARIA SATOKO KITAHARA

— The daughter of an aristocratic university professor, Satoko was raised Shinto. Though she had a privileged upbringing and enjoyed many luxuries and cultural opportunities, she wondered in the wake of the World War II if life was truly worth living.

A chance encounter with a poorly-made statue of the Blessed Mother gave Satoko the peace she longed for. She began to ask questions and, at 20, she became a Catholic.

Packing a few meager possessions and smiling, Satoko moved to Ants Town, a shantytown. She taught the children, took them on excursions to the country,

improved their manners, and, above all, preached the Gospel to them and their parents, making many conversions.

Ill with tuberculosis, Satoko would not leave her people, and died among them at the age of 28, with a smile on her face.

The Pope Speaks / Habla el Papa

Lenten Message 2019 “For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the

children of God” (Rm 8: 19)

Indeed, when we fail to live as children of God, we often

behave in a destructive way towards our neighbors and other

creatures – and ourselves as well – since we begin to think

more or less consciously that we can use them as we will.

Intemperance then takes the upper hand: we start to live a

life that exceeds those limits imposed by our human

condition and nature itself. We yield to those untrammelled

desires that the Book of Wisdom sees as typical of the

ungodly, those who act without thought for God or hope for the future (cf. 2:1-

11). Unless we tend constantly towards Easter, towards the horizon of the

Resurrection, the mentality expressed in the slogans “I want it all and I want it

now!” and “Too much is never enough”, gains the upper hand.

Si no anhelamos

imponerse.

As part of our Lenten preparation in PreK 4 and Kinder we planted seeds of love, generosity, respect, patience; through prayer, sacrifice and almsgiving.

They were taught that their faith is like a seed. Through proper care and love their seeds will bloom into beautiful flowers by Easter and they will bloom as children of God.
