32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) Eternal Life A Sunday Reflection By Fr. Luis This is a very important week in the history of the United States of America. Our future will be decided by the votes of the people as we elect the new president of our country. As Catholics we have the responsibility before God and our nation to exercise our right to vote. Go out and vote! The Catholic Church invites us to vote grounded on our values, faith and Catholic teachings. In our society today one thing pleases the world, tomorrow another, and what is praised on one occasion is denounced on another. Our values, faith and teachings are not polluted or tainted by what is in style or what is passing, by what is popular or by the political interests of a particular candidate. The many centuries of experience of our Catholic Church have taught her to examine candidates based on integrity, philosophy and performance. As Catholic citizens we must “see beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric critically and to choose our political leaders according to principles, not party affiliation or mere self-interest.” (USCCB, Living the Gospel, no.33) This week pray and exercise your right to vote in a Catholic and responsible way. May the intercession of the Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception, patroness of the USA be with us. God bless America!

Como católicos tenemos la responsabilidad ante Dios y la nación de ejercer nuestro derecho al voto. ¡Vaya a votar! La Iglesia Católica nos invita a votar fundamentados en nuestros valores, nuestra fe y las enseñanzas de la Iglesia. En nuestra sociedad de hoy, un día se aprueba una cosa y mañana, otra; lo que se alaba en este momento es denunciado al siguiente. Nuestros valores, fe y enseñanzas no están manchados por lo que está de moda o lo que es pasajero, por lo que es popular o por los intereses políticos de un candidato en particular. Los siglos de experiencia han enseñado a la Iglesia Católica a examinar a los candidatos en base a la integridad, filosofía y resultados. Como ciudadanos católicos debemos “ver más allá de las políticas partidistas, analizar con criterio la retórica de campaña y escoger a nuestros líderes políticos según principios, no por filiación partidista o por simple interés egoista” (USCCB, Living the Gospel, no.33). Esta semana los invito a rezar y ejercer su derecho al voto de manera católica y responsable. MAKING MORAL CHOICES

The bishops do not tell Catholics how to vote; the responsibility to make political choices rests with each person and his or her properly formed conscience, aided by prudence. This exercise of conscience begins with always opposing policies that violate human life or weaken its protection. When morally flawed laws already exist, prudential judgment is needed to determine how to do what is possible to restore justice—even if partially or gradually—without ever abandoning a moral commitment to full

protection for all human life from conception to natural death (see St. John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, no. 73). Prudential judgment is also needed to determine the best way to promote the common good in areas such as housing, health care, and immigration. When church leaders make judgments about how to apply Catholic teaching to specific policies, this may not carry the same binding authority as universal moral principles but cannot be dismissed as one political opinion among others. These moral applications should inform the consciences and guide the actions of Catholics. As Catholics we are not single-issue voters. A candidate’s position on a single issue is not sufficient to guarantee a voter’s support. Yet a candidate’s position on a single issue that involves an intrinsic evil, such as support for legal abortion or the promotion of racism, may legitimately lead a voter to disqualify a candidate from receiving support. As Catholics, we are led to raise questions about political life other than those that concentrate on individual, material well-being. We focus more broadly on what protects or threatens the dignity of every human life. Catholic teaching challenges voters and candidates, citizens and elected officials, to consider the moral and ethical dimensions of public policy issues.

Los obispos no dicen a los católicos cómo votar; la responsabilidad de tomar decisiones políticas recae en cada persona y su conciencia bien formada, apoyada por la prudencia. Este ejercicio de la conciencia comienza con oponerse siempre a las políticas que violan la vida humana o debilitan su protección. His clear and profound doctrine has come to us in a large number of homilies that follow the liturgical year. He convened the Council of Chalcedon, which defined Christ’s human and divine natures in one person. The Jubilee of Mercy El Jubileo de la Misericordia

How can we, therefore, be witnesses of mercy? We do not think that it is done with great efforts or superhuman actions. No, it is not so. The Lord shows us a very simple path, made by small actions which, nonetheless, have great value in his eyes, to the

extent to which he has told us that it is by these actions we will be judged…. There are also, however, seven other works of mercy called “spiritual”, which pertain to other equally important needs, especially today, because they touch the person’s soul, and often create the greatest suffering...These are daily things! Over the course of centuries, many simple people have put this into practice, giving their sincere witness of faith. The Church, after all, faithful to her Lord, nourishes a preferential love for the weakest. Often it is the people closest to us who need our help. We should not go out in search of some unknown business to accomplish. It is better to begin with the simplest, which the Lord tells us is the most urgent. In a world which, unfortunately, has been damaged by the virus of indifference, the works of mercy are the best antidote.

¿Cómo podemos ser testigos de misericordia? No pensemos que se trata de cumplir grandes esfuerzos o gestos sobrehumanos. No, no es así. El Señor nos indica una vía mucho más simple, hecha de pequeños gestos que sin embargo ante sus ojos tienen un gran valor, hasta tal punto que nos ha dicho que sobre estos seremos juzgados.... La Iglesia ha llamado estos gestos «obras de misericordia corporales», porque socorren a las personas en sus necesidades materiales. No obstante hay otras siete obras de misericordia llamadas «espirituales», que afectan a otras exigencias igualmente importantes, sobretodo hoy, porque tocan la esfera íntima de las personas y a menudo son las que más hacen sufrir. ...¡Son cosas de todos los días! En el curso de los siglos, muchas personas simples las han puesto en práctica, dando así genuino testimonio de su fe. La Iglesia por otra parte, fiel a su Señor, nutre un amor preferencial por los más débiles. A menudo son las personas más cercanas a nosotros las que necesitan nuestra ayuda. No debemos ir en busca de quién sabe cuáles empresas por realizar. Es mejor iniciar por las más simples, que el Señor nos indica como las más urgentes. En un mundo desgraciadamente afectado por el virus de la indiferencia, las obras de misericordia son el mejor antídoto.

encouragement and direction, Louise formed a group of women dedicated to

serving the sick, the poor and the neglected. The Daughters of Charity received formal approval from the Vatican in 1655 . She traveled around France forming

convents and instituting the Daughters as workers in hospitals, orphanages and

other institutions. Louise worked zealously until her death in Paris in the year

1660. She was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1934 and was declared patroness of

social workers in 1960.
