Dear Friends Being spiritual and religious don’t have to be opposed. For example, many Muslim students find that it’s the religious atmosphere on Catholic college campuses that helps them be more willing to practice their own faith. Says one Muslim student at Catholic University in Washington: “Being a religious school, there’s a religious environment and practicing religion is expected…praying on campus wasn’t a problem really, in terms of getting weird stares or something.” It’s this same religious orientation that makes St. Anne School special. Of course, our school tries to do what any school would do: help our students do their best in science, math, English, history, Spanish, computers, art, music, and physical education. But, it’s our religious atmosphere that helps to create the kind of welcoming , family-like, spiritual environment that encourages young minds to raise the questions by which learning happens. Just take how it affects the teaching of science. Young people often feel that science and religion are in conflict and science is seen as more reliable. When science is taught in a religious setting, however, students can learn that the two don’t have to be hostile to each other. They are simply asking different, not opposing, questions. Science, generally, asks what, when, and how things are, while religion asks why there is something to be studied at all rather than nothing. This week is Catholic Schools Week. We honor the work of the teachers and administrators of our school. We honor the parents who sacrifice so much to help their children to have an education that stresses the religious quality of life. And, we honor our students for being open to the joy of learning, to be curious about our world and the Mystery from which all things come and toward which all things tend. Emphasizing the religious dimension of life is the central purpose of any parish of course. To be a part of a community that stresses this quality is meant to help each of us to stay connected to our relationship with Christ. The purpose of Christian communities like St. Anne is to keep before our eyes just how Christ reveals the spiritual dimension of all matter. As our Muslim friends remind us, it’s difficult, in a secular world, to be spiritual on our own. We need religious practices to renew our spirituality. This is why in Lent this year we’ll have our Parish Mission on each of the Sundays of this season. That Mission will help us to appreciate how to be spiritually religious in our everyday lives, to connect our worship with our work and liturgy with life. That’s also why St. Anne’s school is part of St. Anne’s parish and why St. Anne’s parish, and all other schools and parishes in Bergen, Hudson, Essex, and Union Counties, are part of the larger Archdiocese of Newark. We need our connection to the Archdiocese to help us do the spiritual and corporal works for which parishes exist. Finally, it’s why, on February 3 rd and 4th, we’ll be invited to make a pledge to the Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal. If St. Anne’s Parish is important for our spiritual lives, then the Archdiocese is too. Won’t you consider making a pledge so it can do its work to help us do ours? Love, Fr.Joe

Dear Friends

Being spiritual and religious don’t have to be opposed. For example, many Muslim students find that it’s the religious atmosphere on Catholic college campuses that helps them be more willing to practice their own faith. Says one Muslim student at Catholic University in Washington: “Being a religious school, there’s a religious environment and practicing religion is expected…praying on campus wasn’t a problem really, in terms of getting weird stares or something.”

It’s this same religious orientation that makes St. Anne School special. Of course, our school tries to do what any school would do: help our students do their best in science, math, English, history, Spanish, computers, art, music, and physical education. But, it’s our religious atmosphere that helps to create the kind of welcoming, family-like, spiritual environment that encourages young minds to raise the questions by which learning happens.

Finally, it’s why, on February 3rd and 4th, we’ll be invited to make a pledge to the Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal. If St. Anne’s Parish is important for our spiritual lives, then the Archdiocese is too. Won’t you consider making a pledge so it can do its work to help us do ours? Love,

REFLECTION

THIRST - by Mary Oliver

Another morning and I wake with thirst

for the goodness I do not have. I walk

out to the pond and all the way God has

given us such beautiful lessons. Oh Lord,

I was never a quick scholar but sulked

and hunched over my books past the

hour and the bell; grant me, in your

mercy, a little more time. Love for the

earth and love for you are having such a

long conversation in my heart. Who

knows what will finally happen or

where I will be sent, yet already I have

given a great many things away, expecting

to be told to pack nothing, except the

prayers which, with this thirst, I am slowly learning.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be

free of anxieties.” (1 Corinthians 7:32)

How much anxiety do we bring upon ourselves by constantly worrying about not having enough or attaining more things? God won’t necessarily give you everything you want, but He will provide everything you need. Try this – use the word “pray” instead of “worry” in the future.

MILESTONE ANNIVERSARY MASSES There will be two special Masses celebrating

milestone years for married couples.

The Archbishop will celebrate the Mass for

couples celebrating 50 or more years of

marriage on May 6, 2018.

On April 29, 2018 he will celebrate the Mass for

couples who are celebrating 5 and 25 years of

marriage. All the liturgies are at the Cathedral-

Basilica and couples need to be registered in

order to receive certificates. Register by calling

Lynn at the Rectory at 201-791-1616.

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we become ever

more truly the People of God. If you have any comments, please feel free to contact any of the following Pastoral Council

Representatives: Donna Stickna, Melissa Rovetto-Ruffner & Marianne Cummins .

due to normal attrition. Your participation will enable us to continue this effort.

Moving into Lent wrestling with reality

Having doubts and fears is not a sin. The sin is to allow these fears to determine our responses,

to limit our choices, to compromise respect and generosity, to feed hostility and rejection. The sin is to refuse to encounter the other. Because every encounter is a privileged opportunity to encounter the Lord.

We know Global warming is daunting. So here’s a place to start. The Faith Center is continuing

its parish-wide program Creation At The Crossroads by offering 17 often-asked questions with

some straightforward answers in an 8-Part Series. The Qs/As will appear in St. Anne’s parish

bulletin for 8 weeks.

(The information comes from a New York Times National Sunday article titled “Your Questions

About Climate Change, Answered” published on September 24, 2017.)

PART 3 -- WHAT COULD HAPPEN?

1. How much trouble are we in?

Big trouble. Over the coming 25 or 30 years, scientists say, the climate is likely to

gradually warm, with more extreme weather. Coral reefs and other sensitive habitats are already

starting to die. Longer term, if emissions rise unchecked, scientists fear climate effects so severe

that they might destabilize governments, produce waves of refugees, precipitate the sixth mass

extinction of plants and animals in the Earth’s history, and melt the polar ice caps, causing the

seas to rise high enough to flood most of the world’s coastal cities. The emissions that create

those risks are happening now, raising deep moral questions for our generation.

2. How much should I worry about climate change affecting me directly?

Are you rich enough to shield your descendants? The simple reality is that people are

already feeling the effects, whether they know it or not. Because of sea level rise, for instance,

some 83,000 more residents of New York and New Jersey were flooded during Hurricane Sandy

than would have been the case in a stable climate, scientists have calculated. Tens of thousands

of people are already dying in heat waves made worse by global warming. The refugee flows

that have destabilized politics around the world have been traced in part to climate change. Of

course, as with almost all other social problems, poor people will be hit first and hardest.

“The climate is a common good, belonging to all and

meant for all. A very solid scientific consensus

indicates that we are presently witnessing a disturbing

warming of the climatic system. In recent decades this

warming has been accompanied by a constant rise in

the sea level and, it would appear, by an increase of

extreme weather events. Humanity is called to

recognize the need for changes of lifestyle, production

and consumption, in order to combat this warming. . . Pope Francis, Laudato Si’, 23

Thank you to all who generously supported Saint Anne at Christmas! We received a total of $74,671.00 in contributions to our Christmas collection,

as well as $3,347.00 for our Christmas Flowers.

We are grateful to the 1,384 people who worshipped with us last weekend and contributed $12,532.00 in the offertory and $2,858.00 through Online Giving offertory, which along with

other fees and donations, totaled $20,359.00. Our weekly expenses average out to $20,348.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than others.

Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra energy months. In the

back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should happen to hit the jackpot that

week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate it! You can throw these special envelopes

right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in

the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And special

thanks to those who have already been doing it regularly. It makes a difference!!!

Online Giving…

You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

There are several ways to access the system: 1. Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will see a

Fill out the form and click “submit.” When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods.
