    COVER STORY

    Mic Man, by Paul Ward

Mic Man is a local rapper and thiswas done as part o a shoot or hisalbum cover, explains Paul.He wanted to look as bling aspossible, so we borrowed the

jewelry and I asked him to put hishand just a ew inches away romthe lens. The background wasnothing more than a white sheet

and I lit the shot with two Bowensstudio lights.

You can see more o Pauls workin our Money Makers eature, starting on page 14.

Specialise or generalise? There can be many catalysts to startinglie as a reelance photographer. Yo mayhave won a photographic competition,

done some shots or amily or riendsthat trned ot really well, or yo coldbe sick to the back teeth o yor crrentjob and ancy doing somethingdierent. Whatever the reason, one othe key choices yo shold make as areelancer is what type o work yo wantto ndertake. Broadly speaking, yo havea choice o or options:

SpecialisingI yore highly procient in onephotographic discipline, sch as natre, sports or landscapes, and wold liketo stick to it, then specialising is theway orward or yo. Bear in mind thatcompetition will be erce, particlarlyi yo have a poplar specialist sbject.Yor work will have to be as good as, i not better than, other recognised namesin the eld, so yoll have to be highlycritical abot yor shots i yo arent, someone else will be! The advantage ospecialising is that it can mean little orno investment in new eqipment thechances are yoll already have whatyo need pls yo know yoll alwaysbe comortable with the sbject matteryore shooting.

CameraslCanon EOS-1DMkII (right)lCanon EOS-1NI se the 1D ormost o my work,as the majority omy clients preer digital. The 1N isa sel back p, pls it can alsobe sed i any clients reqest shotson lm.

    LenseslSigma 15mm /2.8lCanon EF 17-40mm /4lCanon EF 28-135mm /3.5-5.6lCanon EF 100-400mm /4.5-5.6

The 100-4 00mm lens was th emost expensive to by and is alsothe one I se the least typical! In hindsight, a 75-300mm woldhave served me jst as well andcost hal the price. Think carellywhat yo need beore yo by.

Money is one o the primary motivators or

starting a reelance photography career. Bt

when yore starting p, there are two big

isses to consider: shold yo tell the taxman

and how mch shold yo charge.

The answer to the rst qes tion is simple

yes. Fail to tell the taxman abot the money

yo earn, be it a primary, secondary or tertiary

income, yo can land yorsel in hot water.

Yor best possible move is to get a qalied

accontant to explain what yo shold and

sholdnt do. Theyll also be able to prepare

yor end o year acconts and deal with the

Inland Revene on yor behal. All yoll have

to do is pay yor accontant (typically a ew

hndred ponds a year, bt well worth it) and

pay any tax de to the Revene. O corse, this

all sonds simple, bt theres a bit more to it,

which is why well be devoting a eatre to the

money side o reelancing in the next FPME.

An accontant will also be able to advise yo

as to whether yo shold register or VAT. This

is optional i yor bsiness trns over less than

60,000 a year, bt cold be an advantage,

especially i yo intend to by some new gear.

Which leaves yo with what to charge.

Again, its a qestion o doing yor research.

I yo contribte topblications, they may

    already have a ee strctre,

which will depend on how big yor images

are sed. Bti yore chasing commissioned

work, yoll need to have a day rate. When I rst

set p, I ond ot how mch everyone else

charged and then charged slightly less, jst to

generate some work. Yo can then increase

yor prices later when yove bilt p a good

client base. ultimately, thogh, the decision is

yors. Dont price yorsel ot o the market

bt, eqally, dont be too cheap, as people will

dobt yor abilities as a photographer.

    Money matters

    ...dont price yourself

    equally, dont be too

    cheap, as people will

    doubt your abilities as

Getting permissionI yore going to take pictres o someone and make nancial gain rom it, theindividal(s) concerned shold sign a model release orm. Althogh yoll sti llretain copyright o the images, the person shown in them has a right to privacyand so mst agree to the intended se. So, i yo take a pictre o a mate, which

yo send to a pictre library, and is then sold or sein a national advertisingcampaign, its vital that heor she has nderstood thatthis cold happen and havesigned an agreement.

Its similar with property.I yo photograph abilding rom a pblic placesch as a road, the copyrightis yors, and yo can sellthe image. Bt i yo step

on to private land and takepictres withot permissionrom the owner, yoretrespassing. This also appliesto places sch as shoppingcentres and theatres.Althogh theyre pblicplaces, theyre privatelyowned. In either case yollneed written permission totake and/or sell the imageso these bildings.

Signing copyright over to aclientIncreasingly, some bsinesses are seeingthe vale o pictres as an extra sorce o

income. Becase o this, i yore doingcommissioned work, yo may be asked toassign ll copyright to the client yoreworking or. In many cases, this will bethe terms nder which yo are oeredthe work, bt its important that yonderstand the implications o agreeingto this kind o deal.

Essentially, yore selling yor rightsto the images. So, the client who bysthem will, in trn, be able to market themor their own nancial gain. A magazinepblisher, or example, may choose tosell yor work to a calendar or greetingscard manactrer. I yove assigned

copyright to them, yo wont be entitledto a share o the prot they make as areslt. I yo do agree to sign copyrightover to a client, yo shold get paidmore or the work in the rst place. Forexample, i yo decide to charge a dayrate o 200 or commissioned workwhere yo retain copyright, charge 300or a day i yore going to sign copyrightover to the client.

images to. I the same pictre appears

in two pblications at the same time, itwold be embarrassing both or yo andthe pblications concerned. Pls its asre re way to garantee that yo wontget any repeat bsiness!

Copyright neednt be a dirty wordor reelance photographers, bt itsimportant that yo ascertain prontwhere yo stand with any potentialclients. A degree o negotiation maybe reqired, bt ltimately yo sholdprotect yor rights, protect yor imagesand keep yor clients happy.

    Types of use

I yo sbmit images to a pblication andhavent agreed to a sign over copyright,yo will typically be agreeing to a one ose. This means that yoll be paid a eeto print yor image once. The copyrightremains with yo, the client is eectivelyborrowing it rom yo. I the pblisherses it more than once, even in the sameedition o the pblication, they havebroken the one o agreement and yoreentitled to a higher ee.

To protect yorsel, its a good ideanot to doble p on who yo send

Understanding copyrightAs a reelance photographer, yo need to be aware o

copyright law and how it aects the pictres yo take.On a very basic level, when yo take a pictre, yo ownthe copyright to that image. Owning copyright meansthat a third party can only se the image i yo agreeto it. Typically, in retrn or yo agreeing to the imagebeing sed by a client yo will receive a payment andbe identied as the images athor (sally by meanso a pictre credit). However, there are some instanceswhere the laws srronding copyright can vary. Itsthose we concentrate on here.

My route into making money rom

photography started in 1974, when I

picked up a camera or the rst time.I bought a copy o Practical Photographyto teach me how to use it, and while

the content was very staid by todaysstandards, it was enough to get me

hooked. I religiously bought every issueand soon owned a ull 35mm outt.

When I let school, I got a job workingor a photographic retailer. The pay wasdire, but it meant I could play with new

gear, talk enthusiastically with customersand get discount o more kit, so it wasbearable. I read every photography book

and magazine going and built up a broadknowledge covering everything romthe Zone system to the Scheimpugprinciple. My ever-increasing knowledgeprompted me to buy a medium-ormat

outt and soon ater I had large ormat.I invested in processing kit and usedto convert my parents pantry - a 2t x4t room, just big enough to house anenlarger and three trays. It was a pain to

black out, but I got loads o enjoymentusing it and dabbled in toning, preash

techniques and double printing. Buoyedwith the quality o results I was getting, and eeling condent that I could spot

a good picture, I started to enter the PPPhotographer o the Year competition.Every month I thought Id submitted acracker, only to receive a rejection slip a

ew weeks later. Then, while working or Jessops, my

luck changed. I entered an in-housecompetition and came rst, scoopingtwo Sigma lenses.

    Winning made me more condent

to submit photos to the photographymagazines Id been learning rom. I stillgot the rejections rom PP, but in June1989 I spotted one o my photos inAmateur Photographer. What a eeling!

More to the point, what a trigger!I subscribed to the Bureau o

    Freelance Photographers and

Freelance Focus and started to getleads. I submitted to calendar and card

companies, picture editors and localpapers. Results started to appear. I gotcommissions to do weddings, actorystock shoots and publicity events. I waspublished in the Shefeld Stars 1990

Calendar, had a picture used on the covero the Shefeld Citizens Guide and thengot my rst cover on the British Amateur

Photographers Association magazine. It wasnt long beore AP was phoning

me asking or caption details to thepics Id supplied.

    But all this activity

still wasnt bringingin enough moneyor me to buy thegear I wanted, andPractical Photography

    still werent usinganything I submitted!

I tried a dierentapproach andsubmitted illustrated

articles. I used mymums vintageRemington typewriter, which was always

getting jammed andpunched holes in thepaper when typing theletter O. Despite thishandicap, my knowledge

and interest in specialist areas meant Ihad a succession o material published inAmateur Photographer.

My career took a dramatic change

when I saw an ad or a technical writer onPractical Photography. I applied and aterthree interviews was given the job...why?Partly my history, but also partly sheerluck. I sent the CV in with a photo o

mysel and editor Will Cheungs partnerthought that was novel idea. Withoutthat it could have been another rejectionrom the PP stable!

Working or ten years on the leading

photographic titles has given me an

insight into what does and doesntwork rom a reelance perspective. Overthe coming issues well be passing thisvaluable experience on to you.

    TOP TIPS

    HIF YOURE doing commissioned

work, check i your client wants Raw

images supplied in a certain way. Somemagazine publishers, or example, like

to be supplied with Raw les so they

can apply their own settings. Others

may have very specic settings that you

could apply or them, saving them time

and ofering them a better service.

H DUST ON your DSLRs sensor is

    unavoidable. To minimise it appearing,

be sure to switch your camera of when

changing lenses. This way, the sensor

wont be electrically charged and is less

    likely to attract dust.

HIF YOU have a series o Raw les taken

in the same lighting and all requiring

the same level o alteration, you donthave to use the sliders on every image.

In Photoshops Raw window, click on

the Settings bar and select Previous

    Conversion, which applies all the

    settings rom the previous image.

HONE WAY o quickly editing your

images beore you start converting the

Raw les is to use Photoshops Browser

    eature. Select File-Browse and then

nd the older with the pictures in

rom the menu on the let. A series o

small thumbnails appear which can be

    double-clicked to open the les.

    TECHNIQUE

4PREVIEW YOUR CHANGES.While youre working on the image, youcan check how much it has changed by

unchecking the Preview button at the bottom leto the image window. Heres the image beoreand ater we applied the adjustments. We decreased the exposure by one stop and thenincreased the saturation to boost the colours andmake the petals and sky really vivid. With eachadjustment, you can either use the slider or typein an exact number in the relevant box.

5SHARPEN THE IMAGE. Click the Detail tab on the right o thescreen. Magniy part o the image with plenty o detail in byselecting the magniying tool in the top let hand corner o the

screen. Move the sharpness slider to around the 70 mark, then watchthe diference in the image as the sharpness is applied. This is similarto using Photoshops Unsharp Mask lter. Some images will be newith the maximum sharpening, but keep an eye out or increasednoise, particularly on images with large areas o a single colour.

6FINE TUNE. I you do get increasednoise, Luminance Smoothing canreduce it, but this can soten the image

again! Fine tune the image by using bothsliders to get an optimum result, bearing

in mind that sharpness is paramount! Onceyoure happy with all your alterations, clickthe OK button at the top right o the screen.c

8CHECK FOR DUST. Once the le issaved youve got one more job to do.Have a good look or blurred black

marks on the image, which indicate dust

on the sensor when the picture was taken.Theyre more obvious i youve got a largearea o one colour. Here, theres one in thebright blue sky! To remove, magniy thearea, then use Photoshops Healing Brushtool to sample an area o similar colour andremove it.

7SAVE AS A TIFF. Save the image.Go to File-Save. Select the DestinationFolder, name it accordingly, make sure TIFF

is selected as the le ormat and hit Save. Then, when the TIFF Options panel appears, make sure Image Compression is set to Noneand Byte Order is selected or type o computeryoure saving it on to. In our case, Macintosh.Hit OK. AFTER

DEALING WITH RAW FILES. I youre aWindows user who relies on Microsotsautomatic Scanner and Camera Wizard totake care o your photo to PC downloads,

you need to change your method. The Wizard cannot, atthis moment in time, detect Raw les and leaves them on

the camera/memory card. To overcome this, use your imageediting sotwares browser to locate the photos manually.Click on the My Computer icon, select the camera or cardhard drive and then the necessary image older within it.Microsot has recently introduced a Raw Image Thumbnailerand Viewer or Windows XP. This allows you to view, organise, and print photos captured in Raw image ormats. It currently only works on les rom Canon and Nikon digitalcameras, though.

PCRAW IMPROVEMENTS. The Rawles window has been improved inPhotoshop CS2 and does some o theconversion work or you i you allow

it! The biggest changes are on the right hand side o thescreen where the sliders or key image alterations have Auto

options. Here, CS2 suggests optimum correction settings. Inour experience, weve ound theyre usable 90% o the time, but i you dont like this degree o automation, or preerto dial in your own tweaks, you can still override them byunticking the Auto box and using the sliders.

Photoshop CS2 also does away with the Basic andAdvanced tabs that access the image alteration options. InCS2 ve tabs on the right o the window allow access to a widerange o overrides.

Finally, you can now Save les directly rom the Raw window.I you do this, bear in mind you wont be able to remove dustas shown in Step 8 above.

General tips for submitting to stock libraries

lMost stock libraries are now ully digital or in the processo converting. Some will still accept flmsubmissions, but most will require scans o flmimages or straight digital fles.

l I youre submitting digital images, manylibraries will have specifc requirements interms o the ormat the images are saved in,the fle size and whether any sharpening oradjustment has been applied.

l Commission ees vary rom library to library, but theaverage is a 50/50 split between you and the library.

l Copyright o any images you submit to a library willremain with you. However, there are an increasing number oroyalty-ree libraries appearing who will require you to assigncopyright over to them.

lMany libraries have comprehensive websites, whichinclude details about how to submit your work and any

current requirements. Its worth checking these out beoreyou get in touch as youll probably fnd the answers to most oyour questions.

What picture formats do you accept?

Most o our work comes in digital ormat, butwell also take exceptional transparencies.

How many images would you like in a

    submission?

Initial submissions should be a minimum o800 images, low resolution JPEGs i youresending digital. Digital photographers needto be using cameras capable o at least 17Mbfles (SLRs with six megapixels and above).

    How do you like submissionspresented?

I we accept your work well need securelypackaged and ully captioned transparenciesor TIFFs i supplying digital. Digital fles needcaption and keyword inormation embeddedwithin them. We can supply a hard drive i alarge number o images need to be sent to us.

How many images would aphotographer be expected to supplyon a regular basis?

Its dicult to put a fgure on it, but wedcertainly need pictures on a continuousbasis. We tend to be selective about thephotographers we use so we can do well orthem. Given this, we expect a good supply ooriginal material.
