fPCOVER STORY
Kiwi Rain by Rob Atlas
Robs just starting out in hisreelance career, but with shotslike this, we hope it isnt too longbeore hes doing well. This was atable-top set-up with a sotbox asthe background. The kiwi ruit wasstuck on a needle and suspendedrom the top o a crystal block, which was lled with water, Rob
explains. I put my camera on atripod, set the sel-timer and thendripped water into the containerby using a can with holes in thebottom. Pretty simple, really.

On the basis o the eedback
weve received so ar, you
seem to like what were doing.
Even so, we have made a ew changes to this issue.
Most notable is that were now going by the title
FPME. We think this gives the magazine a stronger
identity and ties in perectly with our website
address. Also, in line with eedback, weve toned
down the technique and concentrated more on
the business side o reelancing with our MneyMatter eature. I hope you like the changes, and
please keep your comments coming.
Im particularly keen to hear rom reelancers
who would like to contribute to FPME with words
andpictures. I you eel you could write an article
or the magazine, please get in touch.
An Image Buyer
request has been
put up on the FPME
website, so please
use it to contact
me. Plus, make
sure you visit the
website on a weekly
basis to get brand
new leads thatll
help you sell your
pictures. By usingthis ree service a number o subscribers have
already made their subscription ee back in sales.

This is my son, who entereda sunower-growingcompetition this year andwon! Being the sort o storylocal newspapers love, I gotin touch with my local paperand ofered to take a shotor them. They obliged andthe picture, along with abrie story, appeared in thepaper the ollowing week, netting me 30. OK, its nota huge amount, but it onlytook me 10 minutes to takethe picture and send it tothe paper. 180 an hour?
Sounds like a pretty decentrate to me!

What is the overall freelance potential?
Very good or work that meets the high
standards set by our readers and contributors.
What sections of the magazine can
freelancers contribute to?
Reader Gallery, The Printers Art, Portolio,
Reportage, Readers Darkrooms and technique
eatures (both traditional and digital).
What sort of images do you have an
on-going need for?
We dont have much need or single images
(except or in Reader Gallery) as most o our
eatures are commissioned word and
picture packages.
What type of images dont you want to
see from freelancers?
Weddings.
How do you like submissions to be
presented?
Black & white prints should be minimum size10x8in, maximum size 12x16in. Inkjet prints can
be either A4 or A3. Label all prints on the reverse
with ull name and address, daytime telephone
number and e-mail address, and enclose a list o
brie captions.Digital images or scans should be TIFF les,
300dpi, Mac compatible, no bigger than A4.
Digital black & white les will always reproduce
better i saved as RGB or CMYK as opposed to
greyscale. Please label any CD with ull name and
address, daytime telephone number and e-mail
address. A list o brie captions to each image
should be enclosed either separately or saved as
a Word document on the CD. An inkjet printout
o thumbnails o the images should also be
enclosed with the submission. Always enclose a
stamped, addressed envelope i you would likeyour submission returned.
Whats the biggest mistake potential
freelancers make?
1) Not studying the magazine beore phoning.
2) Writing an article without consulting the
editor rst. We judge an idea on the pictures
rst, writing second, so always phone or
e-mail beore writing something, as your
idea might not tally with the editors
requirements, or may even double up
with something already commissionedrom another contributor. 3) Sending
a submission by ordinary post. Always
send at least Recorded Delivery,
preerably Special Delivery.
Whats the potential for
freelancers supplying words as
well as pictures?
Better than pictures alone. Dont be
put o i you are an inexperienced
writer we will always provide a
detailed brie to help you to matchour house style.
Theres a wide range of photography magazines on the market and theyre
a rich seam for freelancers. We talked to the editors of some of the
leading titles to find out what they look for from potential contributors

What is the overall freelance potential on
Practical Photography?
Its pretty good. Were always on the look out or
great images that can illustrate a technique or
just make people go wow, I wish Id taken that.
What sections of the magazine can
freelancers contribute to?
Our technique section, Take Better Pictures, is one
area where reelancers can contribute, especially
i they have a specic skill or method that would
be o interest to keen photo enthusiasts.
Theres always the chance to get an image into
our Gallerysection and images that work well onthe cover are also hard to nd. For cover shots it s
important to remember that the logo needs to
stand out at the top o the picture and there will
be teasers down the let-hand side. Frequently
used subjects are landscape, wildlie, and
portraits, but that doesnt rule other subjects out.
What sort of images do you have an
on-going need for?
We probably use landscapes more than anything
because its such a popular subject, but wildlie
is also regularly eatured. To be honest, anyinventive imagery is great. I like to see pictures o
everyday objects or places that have been shot
in a really creative way. Also remember that we
try to be reasonably seasonal and were working
about two months ahead o ourselves. So, or
spring images, you should be sending them into
us around February.
What type of images dont you want to see
from freelance contributors?
Average ones. Hideously manipulated
photographs. Anything that is dull, predictable ortechnically fawed.

Were aimed at anyone with
a camera who is interested in
trying to take better pictures.
Photography is, or them, a
passion and a huge creative outlet.
They see pictures everywhere and
are always craving inspiration
and have a desire to improve
whatever their current level and
time constraints.
How do you like submissions to be
presented?
Transparencies are still ne, but CDs with high-
resolution images are also more than acceptable.
The images should be as large as possible (around300dpi at A4), but please dont interpolate them
or ruin them with a ridiculous amount o Unsharp
Mask. All images (digital or lm) should be
accompanied by a list that gives all the relevant
details: where, when, and how the picture was
taken. And write down a daytime telephone
number and an e-mail address too, please.
All CDs must be accompanied by an index sheet
o thumbnail pics. Keep everything as simple and
easy to access as possible. Dont send more than
10 to 15 pictures. Id rather see six brilliant pictures
than 106 average ones.
Whats the biggest
mistake potential
freelancers make?
Sending too many pictures,
rather than a shortlist o their
best. Their best might be
among the mix, but youre
less likely to be knocked
out by the quality o the
submission i there are
loads o average shots inthere as well.
Whats the potential
for freelancers
supplying words as
well as pictures?
Im denitely
interested in hearing
rom anyone who
thinks theyre able to
put words and pictures
together although they must be prepared towork to a tight brie so their copy is in tune with
the PP house style. And sometimes Id be asking
or behind-the scenes shots too so they cant be
camera shy themselves!
How should potential freelancers get in
touch with you?
Email me at: [email protected] with what
they can oer. But please dont send me loads o
low-res images by e-mail. Or, just drop us a line
and include a small selection o work. The address
is Practical Photography, Bretton Court, Bretton,Peterborough, PE3 8DZ.

Any changes you make to the image will berecorded as part o the Action. You can be as simple or detailedas you wish with the number o changes you make. Once yourehappywith thealterationsyouve made, click OK.

8PUT THE KETTLE ON.
Photoshop will now openeach image and apply thechanges you specied within theaction. As Raw les are, by theirvery nature, large in size, batchprocessing can take a while goand make yoursel a cup o teawhile Photoshop does the hardwork or you!
TOP TIPS
HTHERES NO LIMIT! Using Batch
processing doesnt have to be
limited to working with Raw les.
You may, or example, have a
selection o TIFFs that youd like to
apply a certain efect to, or want a
set o JPEGs re-sizing or web use.
This can be done by rst applying
an action and then using the Batch
command in the same way.
HSPEED THINGS UP. You can select quick keys
to access an action without having to use the
Actions Palette. With the Actions Palette open,
select the action you want to assign a quick key
to by clicking it once and then, rom palette
menu box, select Action Options. Select a
Function Key, using Shit and/or Command i
necessary, then click OK. The action can then
be accessed by pressing this key.
TECHNIQUE
5SAVE THE CHANGES.Once the le hasopened in Photoshop,
choose File-Save As andsave the image as a TIFF,or whatever le type yourequire. Again, this will besaved as part o the action.
You can continue to makechanges to the le withinPhotoshop using eaturesnot available in the Rawles window. Once yourenally happy with all thechanges, close the imageand go back to the ActionsPalette. Click Stop at thebottom o the palette toend the Action recording.
6CREATE TWO FOLDERS. Now, with theAction set up, you can apply the samealterations to all the remaining les by
using Photoshops Batch command. Youllneed to create two olders. One with all theRaw images in, and a second to save theconverted images into. You can also nowclose the Action palette i space is tight onthe desktop.
7GET BATCHING! Select File-
Automate-Batch to bring upthe Batch processing window. At the top o the window, choosethe Set and Action youve createdin steps 1-5. In this case we namedthe set FPME Actions and namedthe Action Raw Files. Now, go toSource, select Folder and thenclick Choose and locate the olderon your hard drive with the Rawimages in. Then do the same inDestination, but this time choosethe second older to save yourconverted images into. Finally, make sure the Override Action
Open Commands is ticked. I itisnt, the same le will be openedagain and again. Click OK.
HMADE A MISTAKE? I you make a
mistake while dening an action,
go to the Actions Palette menu by
clicking the black triangle in the top
right hand corner o the palette,
and select Record Again.

Jet Tec printer inks1
Buying an inkjet printer is relativelycheap, but eeding them with inks isnt.
These Jet Tec inks cost substantially lessthan own-brand versions and, thanks tosome clever technology which enablesthe printer to extract more ink rom thecartridge, are claimed to give 30% longerlie. So wheres the catch?
Well, in our tests using an EpsonCX3200 printer, there didnt seem to beone. When the low ink symbol appeared, the cartridges just kept on printing!
Theres no discernible dierence in printquality either, even when printing athigh-quality photo resolution.
Jet Tec are available or most Epson,Canon, HP and Lexmark inkjet printers.

When you get back, process therst picture o each subject using theQPcolorsot sotware, which is ree todownload rom www.qpcard.com, thenapply the corrections to all subsequent

Kaiser Digishield4
Digital cameras may be revolutionisingthe way we take pictures, but they dohave problems. Viewing LCD images inbright sun is one, which is where theDigishield comes in.
Attaching via the cameras tripodbush (which can still be used), the shieldcan be adapted to t most models, although we ound it wasnt suitable ora pro-spec SLR with a contoured batterypack. When not in use, the Digishield canbe olded fat. Its not ideal i you want toconstantly take and review pictures, buti you want to take a ew rames, thenreview, its well worth it. The Digishield is
available in two sizes: or LCDs up to 1.5wide, and or LCDs between 1.6 and 1.8.
