All of our registered parishioners should have received in the mail the 2017 Parish Raffle Book and the information sheet explaining the details about the raf-fle. There are 7 weeks before we begin our Parish Carnival and Summer Fest that will begin on August 19th so there is certainly

enough time for everyone to put forth their best effort to sell their raffle book for the benefit of our parish. Each ticket sells for just $5.00 and the cost of the entire raffle book is $100. The Early Bird Raffle drawing for a $100 cash prize will be held on Sunday, August 6th The entire raffle book must be sold by this date in order to participate in the Early Bird Raffle. The cover of the raffle book is used for all Early Bird drawings so you must remember to turn in the cover together with your raffle tickets.

Matthew 11:25-30

Jesus prays in thanks to God, who has revealed himself to the lowly. Background on the Gospel Reading Today’s reading from Matthew’s Gos-pel comes after a discourse in which

Jesus reproaches people who have witnessed his mighty deeds yet still lack belief. In this context, today’s Gospel explains the reason for this unbelief and reveals what is necessary for faith. Today’s Gospel also continues to enhance our understanding of discipleship as last week’s Gospel did. Jesus first prays in thanksgiving to God who has made himself known to Jesus’ disciples. He praises God who has made himself known to the “little ones” and not to the wise and learned. As in other recent readings from Matthew’s Gospel, a contrast is made here between the unbelieving Pharisees, who are wise and learned, and the faithful disciples, tax collectors, and sinners with whom Jesus keeps company. The second part of this reading calls to our attention the unity between the Father and the Son. God has made him-self known through Jesus, and in knowing Jesus, we come to know the Father. In Jesus’ life and in his person, God reveals himself to us. In the concluding sentences of today’s Gospel, Jesus’ teaching is again contrasted to the teaching of the Pharisees. This common theme of Matthew’s Gospel probably reflects tension that existed between Jesus and the Pharisees and be-tween the Pharisees and the community of Christians for whom Matthew wrote. Pharisaic Judaism became the predominant form of Judaism after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusa-lem about 70 A.D. Here that tension is expressed as alternative paths of holiness. The careful observance of the Mosaic law taught by the Pharisees could be experienced by some as diffi-cult and burdensome. In contrast, Jesus’ way of holiness is pre-sented as uncomplicated and even restful.

Saint Benedict Feast day July 11

Benedict’s name means “blessed.” His most famous mon-astery, Monte Cassino, has been destroyed and rebuilt three times. His monks follow the motto Ora et labora, which means “Pray and work.” Benedict was born in Nursia, Italy, about 480. His par-ents were wealthy, so they sent him to Rome to be educated. When he was about 17, he decided to become a hermit. He was disgusted with the wild life of the students. With the help of an old monk, Benedict found a cave on Mount Subiaco about 50 miles south of Rome. He lived there for three years. Men recognized his holiness and joined him.

Sometime around 529, Benedict led a group of monks farther south, where they built Monte Cassino. He wrote his Rule based on Scripture. The monks’ first duty was liturgical prayer. The Benedictine monasteries that spread over Europe became centers of learning, agriculture, hospitality, and medi-cine. Benedict’s monks created illuminated manuscripts. They helped repair the damage caused by the barbarian invaders. Benedict probably died in 547. In art, he is usually shown with his Rule. In 1964, Pope Paul VI named him patron of Europe. Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Feast day July 14

Kateri Tekakwitha is called the Lily of the Mohawks. Her name Tekakwitha means “putting things in order.” She put her life in order in a short time. Kateri was a Mohawk Indian born in what is now Auriesville, New York, ten years after Isaac Jogues and his compan-

ions were martyred there. Her mother was a Christian Algon-quin Indian, and her father was a pagan Mohawk chief. Her parents and a brother died of smallpox when she was only four. Kateri recovered from the disease, but it left her eyes weak and her face scarred. Anastasia, a friend of Kateri’s mother, took care of her and told her stories about the Christian God. When Anastasia left for Canada to join other Christians there, Kateri’s uncle, a Mohawk chief, took Kateri as his daughter. When Kateri’s uncle and aunts wanted her to marry, she refused. She felt that the Great Spirit was the only one she could love. This angered her uncle. Kateri learned more about God from a missionary and asked to be baptized. She was baptized on Easter Sunday. It was hard for Kateri to live as a Christian. Her people expected her to work in the fields on Sunday, the Lord’s Day. Sometimes they didn’t feed her. Children made fun of her and threw stones at her. Kateri endured this for two years. Finally a priest advised Kateri to go to Canada where she would be with other Christians. One day when her uncle was not home, she left for Canada with a Christian named Hot Ashes. When Kateri’s uncle found out she was missing, he fol-lowed her but did not catch her. Kateri brought with her a note from the missionary priest to a Canadian priest that said, “I send you a treasure, Katherine Tekakwitha. Guard her well.” Kateri lived an out-standing Christian life. She went to Mass daily, made frequent visits to the Blessed Sacrament, and prayed the rosary often. She cared for the sick and the old and taught the children. She did much penance. Kateri suffered from bad headaches. She was not strong and could eat very little. When she died at the age of twenty-four, the scars on her face disappeared and she was beautiful. Kateri’s last words were, “Jesus, I love you.” from Saints Kit

El Padre ha puesto todas las cosas en mis manos. Nadie conoce al Hijo sino el Padre, y nadie conoce al Padre sino el Hijo y aquel a quien el Hijo se lo quiera revelar. "Vengan a mí, todos los que están fatigados y agobiados por la carga, y yo los aliviaré. Tomen mi yugo sobre ustedes y aprendan de mí, que soy manso y humilde de corazón, y encontrarán descanso, porque mi yugo es suave y mi carga ligera".

San Benito 11 de Julio

Padre del monasticismo occi-dental, decidió abandonar Roma y el mundo para evitar la vida licenciosa de dicha ciudad. Vi-vió como ermitaño por muchos años en una región rocosa y agreste de Italia. En Vicovaro, en Tívoli y en Subiaco, sobre la

cumbre de un farallón que domina Anio, residía por aquél tiempo, una comunidad de monjes, cuyo abad había muerto. Decidieron pedirle a San Benito que ocupara su lugar. Al principio se negó, pero luego cedió ante la insis-tencia. Pronto se puso en evidencia que las estrictas no-ciones de disciplina monástica que San Benito observaba, no se ajustaban a ellos, porque quería que todos vivieran en celdas horadadas en las rocas. El mismo día retornó a Subiaco, no para seguir llevando una vida de retiro, sino con el propósito de empezar la gran obra para la que Dios lo había preparado durante esos tres años de vida oculta. No tardaron en reunirse a su alrededor los discípulos atraídos por su santidad y por sus poderes milagrosos. San Benito se encontró entonces, en posición de empezar aquél gran plan de "reunir en aquél lugar a mu-chas y diferentes familias de santos monjes dispersos en varios monasterios y regiones, a fin de hacer de ellos un sólo rebaño según su propio corazón, para unirlos en una casa de Dios bajo una observancia regular y en permanen-te alabanza al nombre de Dios" Por lo tanto, colocó a to-dos los que deseaban obedecerle en los 12 monasterios de madera, cada uno con su prior. El tenía la suprema direc-ción sobre todos y vivía con algunos escogidos, a los que deseaba formar con especial cuidado. A causa de algunos problemas con el sacerdote Florencio, se transladó a Monte Cassino. En esta región, sobre las ruinas del templo de Apolo, - al que los habitan-tes de este lugar rendían culto antes de su llegada - cons-truyó dos capillas y la abadía de Monte Cassino, alrede-dor del año 530. De aquí partió la influencia que iba a jugar un papel tan importante en la cristianización y civi-lización de la Europa post-romana. Fue tal vez durante este periodo que empezó a concretizar su "Regla", la que está dirigida a todos aquellos que, renunciando a su pro-pia voluntad, tomen sobre sí "la fuerte y brillante armadu-ra de la obediencia para luchar bajo las banderas de Cris-to, nuestro verdadero Rey". Prescribe una vida de oración litúrgica, estudio, y trabajo, llevado socialmente, en una comunidad y con un padre común. San Benito vaticinó el día de su muerte; el último día recibió el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor. Fue enterrado junto a santa Escolástica, su hermana, en el sitio donde antes se levantaba el altar de Apolo que él mismo destru-yó, en Monte Cassino.

XIV Niedziela Zwykła W owym czasie Jezus przemówił tymi słowami: Wysławiam Cię, Ojcze, Panie nieba i ziemi, że zakryłeś te rzeczy przed mądrymi i roztropnymi, a objawiłeś je prostaczkom. Tak, Ojcze, gdyż takie było Twoje upodobanie. Wszystko przekazał Mi Ojciec mój. Nikt też nie zna Syna, tylko Ojciec, ani Ojca nikt nie zna, tylko Syn, i ten, komu Syn zechce objawić. Przyjdźcie do Mnie wszyscy, którzy utrudzeni i obciążeni jesteście, a Ja was pokrzepię. Weźcie moje jarzmo na siebie i uczcie się ode Mnie, bo jestem cichy i pokorny sercem, a znajdziecie ukojenie dla dusz waszych. Albowiem jarzmo moje jest słodkie, a moje brzemię lekkie.

Święty Benedykt z Nursji, opat, patron Europy Benedykt z Nursji na

11 lipca leży do najgłośniejszych postaci w Kościele łaciń-skim. Wsławił się niezwykle mądrą i wyważoną regułą, która stała się podstawą dla bardzo wielu później-szych rodzin zakonnych na Zachodzie. Przez założony

przez siebie zakon Benedykt przyczynił się tylko do pogłębienia życia religijnego w Kościele, ale i szeroko rozumianej kultury. Jego synowie du-chowi zasłużyli się najwięcej dla pozyskania Chrystusowi ludów germańskich. Te racje skło-niły Pawła VI do tego, by w 1964 r. wyróżnić św. Benedykta zaszczytnym tytułem głównego pa-trona Europy. Ojciec Benedykta był właścicielem ziemskiej po-siadłości w Nursji. Benedykt urodził się ok. roku 480 wraz ze swoją bliźniaczą siostrą, św. Scho-lastyką. Pierwsze nauki pobierał w rodzinnym miasteczku. Na dalsze studia udał się do Rzy-mu. Nie pozostał tu długo. Opuścił wieczne mia-sto, gdyż chciał oddać się Panu Bogu na wy-łączną służbę jako asceta. Udał się ok. 60 km na wschód w kierunku Tivoli i osiadł w przysiół-ku Enfide (dzisiaj Affile) przy kościele świętych Piotra i Pawła u stóp wzgórz Prenestini. Z nie-wiadomych bliżej przyczyn opuścił jednak i to miejsce i przeniósł się do Subiaco. Znalazł tu nie tylko ciszę, ale również dogodną grotę, gdzie

mógł zamieszkać i oddać się wyłącznie kontem-placji. Z rąk jakiegoś mnicha przyjął też habit. Obrana przez niego grota zapewniała mu zupeł-ny spokój. Przebywał tam trzy lata. Miejscowi górale, wypasający kozy zaopatrywali go w ko-nieczną żywność. Z czasem zaczęli przyłączać się do Benedykta uczniowie. Pod jego kierunkiem utworzono 12 małych klasztorków po 12 uczniów każdy. Na czele każdego z nich postawił Benedykt przeło-żonych, od siebie bezpośrednio zależnych.. Kiedy stanął już klasztor i kościół, a mury nowej placówki zaczęły się zapełniać adeptami, Bene-dykt postanowił ułożyć regułę. Zasadniczą jej cechą jest umiar. Celem zasadni-czym, jaki Założyciel wytyczył swoim synom du-chowym, jest służba Boża. Całe życie mnicha, jego wszystkie chwile i czynności winny zmie-rzać do tego, by głosiły chwałę Stworzyciela. De-wizą Patriarchy było: Ora et labora - Módl się i pracuj! Ze szczególną pieczołowitością strzegł kultu liturgicznego, co pozostało do dni obecnych pięknym dziedzictwem jego zakonu. Poważną część dnia zakonnika przeznaczył na lectio divi-na - czytanie Pisma Świętego. Benedykt zmarł 21 marca 547 r. w kilka dni po śmierci swojej siostry, św. Scholastyki, założy-cielki żeńskiej gałęzi benedyktynów. Zaraz po śmierci św. Benedykt odbierał od swo-ich duchowych synów cześć ołtarzy. W Polsce najbardziej znanym opactwem bene-dyktyńskim jest Tyniec. Do Polski benedyktyni przybyli wraz ze św. Wojciechem (+ 997). Za czasów Bolesława Chrobrego założyli klasztor po kamedułach w Międzyrzeczu. Zamieszki, ja-kie po śmierci tegoż króla powstały i nawrót po-gaństwa, doprowadziły do upadku klasztoru. W XI wieku widzimy benedyktynów w Trzemesznie, w Łęczycy (Tum), w Gnieźnie, w Tyńcu, na Łysej Górze, w Czerwińsku, Płocku, Kruszwicy, w Kra-kowie, Sieciechowie, we Wrocławiu, Oleśnicy, Lubiniu i w Gdańsku. Obecnie istnieją ich opac-twa w Tyńcu, Lubiniu koło Kościana oraz Bisku-powie. W ikonografii św. Benedykt przedstawiany jest w habicie benedyktyńskim, w kukulli, z krzyżem w dłoni.
