THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

Is there salva on from the sacrament?

Ini ally yes. Bap sm removes sin and punishment due to sin. However, Bap sm does not take away concupiscence, i.e., the tendency to sin. If we sin in our lives a er Bap sm, then we have to go to the sacrament of Reconcilia on to remove that sin. Furthermore, salva on is a ainable at the end of our lives when we have done everything we can to get to heaven: living a saintly and holy life, praying for ourselves and others, doing works of mercy, etc. For the Catholic, the mission is ongoing and does not stop un l we leave this life. I was saved, I am being saved, and I hope to be saved, and it is in the sacrament of Bap sm that all of this can begin!

If you have a child who has not yet been bap zed, please call Martha at the Parish Office at 575/524-8563 for more informa on.

SAINT MARIA GORETTI Virgin and Martyr

(1890 - 1902) Patron Saint of Victims of Rape

Feast day - July 6 Maria came from a very poor Italian farm family. When she was eight, her mother and father moved from Corinaldo to Ferrriere di Conca in an effort to find better fields to till. They lived in an old barn that they shared with another family, the Serenellis.

Two years into this venture, Maria’s father

died. Her mother continued the backbreaking work and increasingly relied on Maria for help with the other children. When her mother broke the news to Maria that her First Communion would have to be put off because there was no time for her to be prepared, Maria was not daunted. She found the time to go to town for catechism lessons, and at age twelve she was able to receive our Lord. She became a regular communicant and often was seen with a rosary wrapped about her fingers.

Only a few months later, twenty-year-old Alessandro Serenelli came in from the fields one day and attempted to sexually assault Maria. Even as Maria fought his advances, her concern was for Alessandro’s soul. He stabbed her cruelly, fourteen times. She was found still alive, and taken to the hospital, where she professed to forgive Alessandro “for the love of Jesus” before she died. During his time in prison, Alessandro had a dream of Maria, bearing a lily of peace. He repented, and later testified at her canonization proceedings.

A Knights of Columbus

Thank You!

Recently the Immaculate Heart of Mary Council 17083 Knights of Columbus sponsored a parish Blood Drive and a For the Love of Babies Bottle Your Change drive to support CareNet of Las Cruces pregnancy recourse center. Both events were both a huge success.

Vitalant Blood Services reported that 20 pints were donated during the blood drive. Because of those who donated, 60 lives were saved. CareNet of Las Cruces was very grateful for the bottle drive and generosity of our parish because, with the difficulties of the past year because of the pandemic, they were very limited on the number of fundraisers they were able to hold. Many thanks to all our parish families who donated blood and monies to these most worthy, charitable causes.

For information about the Knights of Columbus or suggestions on how the Knights can better serve our parish and community, please contact Steve Duran, Grand Knight at 575.621.1631.

Re lecting on God’s Word When you think of a king coming before his people, the image of someone riding on a donkey does not come to mind. If the Lone Ranger had Silver and Roy Rogers had Trigger, a similar white stallion would seem most fi ng for a king. Not an ass, even a purebred one. But this image from the prophet Zechariah is one that must have planted itself in the imagina on of Jesus, for that is how he made his great entrance into Jerusalem and was greeted as the Messiah. It was not the entrance of a powerful warrior, but of a gentle king whose rule would bring peace to the na ons.

I have some mes regre ed the loss of St. Christopher from the calendar of saints. That legendary saint, whose name means “Christ-bearer,” signaled that the risen Lord had now chosen to be carried by his disciples. We bear him in our bodies, minds, and hearts. We bring him to the world when we work to bring peace and healing and knowledge of the Father.

This necessitates being willing to take on the yoke of Jesus. I remember once hearing that the yokes Jesus made in the carpenter shop under Joseph’s guidance rode easily on the shoulders of the animals, distribu ng evenly the weight they pulled. The yoke Jesus offers us is his teaching about the kingdom of heaven and how to live in it while in the world. This means pu ng on his a tude and spirit of a en ve listening for the will of the Father—home schooling in the best sense.

NO MALAS NOTICIAS

Hospitalidad, fe y discernimiento –cul valos. Así, nadie podrá traerte malas no cias.

NO BAD NEWS

There are many mes when we say, “Tell me what I want to hear, and don’t confuse me with facts.” And we don’t take kindly to someone who might be bold enough to snuff out our expecta ons.

The biggest problem with such an a tude is not that we miss out on the truth or the facts, but that we miss out on the new and surprising gi s others can give us. Like the townspeople in today’s Gospel story, we too o en refuse to allow others to display the talents that can be good news for us.

Today’s readings call for hospitality and faith and discernment. Hospitality opens the doors of our hearts and minds to the “stranger” among us, no ma er how familiar he or she may seem to be. Faith enables us to accept the gi s of others, no ma er how alarming or “strange” they may seem to be. Discernment helps us discover the prophets in our midst, no ma er how amazing they may seem to be. Hospitality, faith, and discernment—cul vate these. Then, nobody can bring bad news. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
