grid. You can search for any value – for example, a quantity, length, bar mark, or note.
Replace performs a search function, and then replaces the searched-for information with a
user entry.
***NOTE*** If you have only one line selected in the Takeoff or Marked Items grids and
you click Replace All, all items in the grid that match your criteria will be replaced. If you
only want to replace information for certain lines, first select those lines before using the
Replace feature.
Reports
Reports can be accessed from the main menu in aSa without having to open the Bar List
program or a particular control code. Simply click on the Bar List icon, and select the

can copy a bar list to the same job or to other jobs.
There are multiple ways to copy a bar list: Save As and Copy/Rename tool.
Save As
To use the Save As feature, simply open the bar list that you want to copy and click File >
Save As.
Choose a new Control Code by clicking the # button and change any job, release, or
description information as necessary. Then click OK.
Copy/Rename/Modify
The Copy/Rename feature should be opened from the main menu or while all of your bar
lists are closed.
19
Bar List Utilities and Time Savers
Choose which function you would like to perform: Copy, Rename, or Modify:
Copy - create a new bar list by duplicating an existing one. The new bar list is named
with a new (unique) control code. You can also change basic information for the new
bar list.
Rename - assign a new control code to an existing bar list. You can also change basic
information for the bar list.
Modify - change basic information for an existing bar list without copying or renaming
it. Using Modify is a quicker alternative to opening the bar list, opening the Bar List
Information screen, making changes, then saving the updated bar list.
Make any changes as necessary and then click the green check icon.
20
Bar List Utilities and Time Savers
Splitting a Bar List Using Bar List Split
The Split feature should be opened from the main menu or while all of your bar lists are closed.
Before selecting your control codes, you need to specify how the Split function will be used.
Click the Options button to set up your split options.
21
Bar List Utilities and Time Savers
Select the desired mode:
Move cuts the items from one control code and pastes them in up to 3 control codes.
The original control code is changed.
Copy simply copies items from one control code into up to 3 other control codes. The
original control code is not changed.
Select Move/Copy options:
Choose to copy Bar List comments by checking the box next to each comment you
want to copy.
Choose which fields to display by checking the Included box next to the Display Name
items. Note: You may check up to 4 items.

Bar List Utilities and Time Savers
Right click on an item for additional options:
Split - Use Split Item to move some, but not all, of the pieces of an item, so that a portion of
the quantity remains in the source file and a portion is moved to the destination file.
For example, a list contains 24 pieces of #4, 12-00 rebar. Use the Split Item option to move
7 pieces of the item to the destination file.
Accumulate - Accumulate and Split allows you to move a specified number of pieces from
one file to another.
25
Bar List Utilities and Time Savers
For example, a list contains two line items of #8, 9-06 straight rebar of the same grade and
coating — 24 pieces and 24 pieces. Use the Accumulate and Split option to move 30 of
those pieces to the destination file, leaving the remaining 18 in the original file.
Range - Use Move Range to move a range of items from one file to another. For example,
you could move all larger sized bars, all bent bars, all straight bars, or all bars of a specified
grade or length.
Select your criteria at the top, then select the Source and Destination files and click
Load.
Click the green check to move all the items to the Destination file.
26
Bar List Utilities and Time Savers
Groups - If your source control code is segregated into groups using Tag Text/Bar List
records, you can easily move the entire contents of the group together. Two methods are
available. Although either method will accomplish the same result, we recommend using:
Group Selection if your source control code contains several tag text groupings and
many line items.
Move Group if your source control code contains only a few groups or has fewer line
items.
Double-click on the group that you want to move to the Destination file.

Using Bar Listing as a Quick Detailing Tool
aSa provides many built-in utilities to help speed up your order entry and to act as a quick
detailing tool outside of a traditional CAD program.
Bar List Tools
o Linear Steel Calculator
Use Linear Steel to take off a run of steel in one direction, such as footings
or walls. Based on settings that you define and the given length, the program
automatically calculates the required number of stock and piece-out bars for
the linear run
In Bar List, click Tools and choose Linear Steel Calculator and enter the
desired lengths in the appropriate fields. When you are finished entering the
lengths, click Calculate and see the calculated results. If you are satisfied
with the results, click the Add Bars button to automatically add these bars to
your bar list
If you have Auto Mark enabled for bent bars, bar marks will
automatically be assigned. If you do not have auto mark turned on,
you will be prompted to add a bar mark for each bent item before
the bar is added to your takeoff grid.
Note: the “S” in the hooks field stands for “standard.” Example, BS90
means both sides have standard 90 degree hooks
o Spiral Calculator
The Spiral Calculator allows you to calculate spiral steel and add it to your
bar list. Although you can enter spirals on the main Bar List screen, Spiral
Calculator gives you greater flexibility by providing the ability to divide a
single spiral into multiple sections.
In Bar List, click Tools and choose Spiral Calculator and enter the desired
lengths in the appropriate fields. When you are finished entering the lengths,
click Calculate and see the calculated results. If you are satisfied with the
results, click the Add Bars button to automatically add these bars to your bar
list.
36
Using Bar Listing as a Quick Detailing Tool
Note: Shape refers to the aSa spiral shapes
o X – Circular spirals
o Y – Square spirals
o XM – Mounted circular spirals (with in-place spacers)
o YM – Mounted square spirals (with in-place spacers)
o XL – Loosely mounted circular spirals (spacers not in-place)
o YL - Loosely mounted circular spirals (spacers not in-place)
The Overall Height is the total length of, an example, the column
you are detailing. Section Height is the height of each spiral (if you
are shipping the spiral in multiple sections).
o Vary Sets
Quickly detail a sloping wall or similar structure by doing a takeoff in Bar
List.
To calculate the quantity of bars in the slope, press Enter on your keyboard
in the Quantity field while the field is blank. This allows you to enter the
span and spacing of the bars. Press OK and the quantity is automatically
figured and entered for you. Enter your bar size and shape if needed
Both straight and bent bars can be varied.
Next, enter the first length of your slope in the Length field. This can be
either the longest or the shortest length, it’s up to you.
Then, click the Vary button. Choose the vary code, varying type (bars par set
or by increment) and then enter the last length. If you entered the shortest
37
Using Bar Listing as a Quick Detailing Tool
length in the original takeoff field then you would enter the longest length in
the Vary screen.
Note: If you are varying bent bars, fill in the last set of dimensions
for the varying set. You can vary one or more than one leg on bent
bars
To see the details of the vary calculation, click on the Details button.
Lastly, click OK to add the bars to your takeoff
The bars are added as one line in your Takeoff Grid but are shown in detail
on Bar List and other reports
In the Takeoff Grid, vary bars are indicated by having data in the
columns that start with “V” such as VCode, V NoEach, etc.
o Tie Calculator
Access the Tie Calculator from the Tools menu within Bar List.
Quickly add bars to your Bar List by selecting a shape of a tie and the
quantity, dimensions, and bar sizes of ties that you need.
Note: aSa has many built-in ties but you can define your own tie
patterns using aSa Tie Manager. To access Tie Manager, click Tools
and choose Tie Manger. Click the Help button (?) for complete
instructions on using Tie Manager.
38
Using Bar Listing as a Quick Detailing Tool
o New in 13.1, a built-in Calculator for quantity and length
In any quantity or length field, type the * key on your keyboard and a
numeric calculator will display. Simply type your math problem and press
Enter for the answer and Enter again to enter this value into the appropriate
field.
Very usefully for doing quick calculations when looking at drawings or
customer orders
Adding Comments to a Bar List
o Four types of messages may be entered and displayed on the Placing List report (see
an example of this report at the end of this handout):
Plan Mark - The placing list report is organized logically by plan/section. On
the placing list, plan marks are preceded by horizontal line separators and
segregate takeoff items.
On any line item, click on the Options button to access the Plan
field to enter your own plan note
This field can be moved to your main Takeoff area by customizing
your Bar List screen.
39
Using Bar Listing as a Quick Detailing Tool
Section - The placing list report is organized logically by plan/section. On
the placing list, section identifiers appear to the left of the corresponding
takeoff item.
Similar to Plan, Section can be accessed in the Options menu or
moved to your main Takeoff area by customizing your Bar List
screen
Line Item Placing Note - The placing note is a short message associated with
a takeoff item. On the placing list, the placing note appears to the right of
the corresponding takeoff item.
Placing notes can be entered per line item by clicking the Options
button in Bar List and then clicking the Identifiers tab. This field
cannot be added to your main takeoff area but you can use Default
Values from the Material field to have Placing filled in automatically
for lines that you are about to enter and then change the value when
your placing needs change.
Placing Note - Short - The short placing note continues a line item placing
note, and appears in the Notes column of the report.
Placing Note - Long - A message that breaks across the entire placing list.
Both Placing Notes can be accessed by selecting the Material field
within Bar List and choosing Placing Note. Next, select your type
(short or long) and type in your note
40
Using Bar Listing as a Quick Detailing Tool
Both are indicated by a turquoise line in the Takeoff tab of Bar List
with the long note containing a check in the OVR column
(indicating there will be a line break at this note
o Images on the Detail Sheet
Adding images to a Detail Sheet not only helps indicate your placing needs,
it adds a professional and clean look to the report.
To add an image, click the Image button on a takeoff item. Browse to the
location of your picture and click Ok. For each line that you add an image,
Detail Sheet will expand and show the image for those lines. View a sample
of a Detail Sheet with images at the end of this handout
o Bar List Comments
Adding comments to your bar list can help convey messages to your
customers and your coworkers.
To add a Bar List Comment, click on Material from within Bar List and
choose either Bar List Comments Top or Bottom
Comments Top will show at the top of the Bar List report right before
the first takeoff item
Comments Bottom will show at the bottom of the Bar List report
right after the last takeoff item (or after the longest length if that is an
option selected in your Bar List Report Options).
o Tag Text / Bar List Messages
Allows you add a message to visually separate items on your list noting
different groupings of bars.
Checking Separate Item Bundles and Separate Master Bundles allows you to
put multiple items into different bundles or groups even if the lengths or bar
marks may be the same throughout the Bar List.
41
Using Bar Listing as a Quick Detailing Tool
You can also add a different release description, drawing number, or
reference to those items
Caution: If “Automatic Bar List Message” is checked, fields overwrite
the default Description, Drawing, and Reference from the Bar List
header information. If this is not checked, the changes only appear
within the Bar List takeoff area and on the Bar List report.
To access this feature, click Tag Text / Bar List Message from the Material
field in Bar List
