FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Two of the most recurring themes in the Scriptures are repentance and reconcilia<on---they also happen to be two of the hardest

things for a disciple of Jesus to do. The readings for Mass this Sunday focus on the challenges associated with repentance and

reconcilia<on. In the first reading, God confirms Ezekiel’s call to be a prophet and assigns him to be a watchman for the house of

Israel. This is no easy task. God gives Ezekiel the responsibility of warning the people that if they do not repent from their wicked

ways and sinful behavior, they will suffer the consequences. God also tells Ezekiel that if he presses the mute bu9on, and fails to

speak the truth to the people, God will hold him responsible. The gospel passage from St. Ma9hew outlines a process Jesus gives

his disciples to reconcile a sinful member back into communion with the Church. The process has roots in ancient Judaism. It

seeks to correct and reprimand a sinful member of the community of faith in a way that reduces animosity and resentment;

promotes repentance on the part of the offending individual; and brings about a just reconcilia<on within the Church. Of course,

we follow the spirit of this process today in the Sacrament of Reconcilia<on. May we all commit ourselves to ongoing conversion

and repentance in our lives; and always seek reconcilia<on with someone we have hurt or someone who has offended us!

News and Notes: A Word about Stewardship of our Buildings and Grounds

As a homeowner, you know that the upkeep or ongoing maintenance of your house and property has to be one of your top

priori<es. The same is true for the priests and people of their parish Church, Rectory, Business/Pastoral Office, and grounds. We

need to be good stewards of the buildings and outdoor space that we have inherited from our predecessors. Over the past four

years, we have made some progress in addressing what may be called “deferred maintenance,” in our parishes. As far as our

funds have allowed, we have repaired what was broken; replaced what was outdated; and inden<fied projects that require

ac<on in the near future.

To name a few projects that have been accomplished at OLA, we have patched up and power-washed the damaged slate roof on

the Church; rebuilt the chipped and aging front stairs of the Church and the hazardous back stairs of the Office Building. In

addi<on, we have refinished and secured the loose railings of these stairs and the ramp leading into the Chapel entrance. We

have replaced the leaky ceiling <les in the Church and are in the process of installing a new sound system in the Church (thanks in

part to a generous dona<on from Evere9 Bank, our neighbors across Salem Street). The well-worn carpets in the Church are now

thoroughly cleaned twice a year and LED lights are gradually being placed in all the Church light fixtures. The Chapel now has

statues, vo<ve candles and flowers, all courtesy of a few OLA parishioners.

At SMG, among other things, we have replaced, repaired and re-pitched over two dozen hea<ng pipes that have burst or leaked

in the Church Hall in the past three winters. This mechanical plumbing work has covered the whole area from the Boiler Room to

the men’s and women’s restrooms, and much of the area covering the mee<ng and storage rooms on one side of the Hall. We

have also taken care of other leaks in the Electric Room, the restroom in the ves<bule area of the Church, the Church itself, and in

the Janitor’s closet downstairs. LED ligh<ng can now be found throughout the SMG Church and Hall.

All of the above Maintenance and Capital Improvement work has cost a lot of money, but I think it is money well spent. Now,

fellow stewards, we need to address other needs, such as repairing the cracked chimney on the roof of the Business Office; and

replacing the aging, peeling and energy sapping doors of OLA Church and the Business Office; cleaning the stain-glass windows in

OLA Church and many other long deferred projects. Similarly, at SMG, we have to con<nue our work on the hea<ng pipes in the

Church, and repair/replace the loose stairs on the side entrance of the Rectory. This la9er project is par<cularly urgent now since

some of the steps are quite dangerous to walk on in the winter months…and it will cost about $7,500 to complete. In the not too

distant future, we will need a new roof on the Church.

As you think about your future financial giving to your respec<ve parish, please factor in a generous amount to help us take care

of these projects. We have budgeted $60,000 for Capital expenses in each parish for this fiscal year. As you respond to your

parish’s Ordinary and Capital needs for the coming fiscal year, please ponder these words from St. Paul’s second Le9er to the

Corinthians: “Consider this; whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows boun<fully will also reap

boun<fully. Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” If everyone

gives what they are able to contribute, we will answer God’s call to be good stewards of his Church, and in return we will receive

grace upon grace. Blessings to all of you in the week ahead!

Ma#hew 18:15-20

Today’s Gospel reading is taken from a chapter of

Ma9hew’s Gospel, which is some<mes called the

“discourse on the Church” or the “church order”

discourse. Jesus explains to his disciples a means of

reconciling when one member of the community

has sinned against another.

Throughout his life, Jesus taught the importance of

forgiveness, offering it even to those who had

crucified him. Important as universal forgiveness is,

Jesus’ instruc<on here explains a process of

reconcilia<on within the church, bringing a sinful

member back into communion.

Jesus does not discourage disagreement within the

community of the Church; he acknowledges the

reality of conflict and error and offers his disciples a

means for addressing such ma9ers. It is in the

conclusion to this teaching that the message of

hope is found: Jesus is present with the community

and will guide the community in its rela<ons. If

decisions are taken in prayer, then the community

can be assured of God’s assistance.

Meet Fr. Sinisa−Bringing truth to the youth of today’s worldFr. Sinisa Ubiparipovic has been working at the Collaborative Parishes of Resurrection and St. Paul in Hingham since he was ordained in 2015. Realizing the potential for a strong youth program, Fr. Sinisa immediately set to forming a strong faith formation for teens in the parish and to delivering the truth of God’s mercy in a way that teens can not only understand, but truly relate.

Today’s teens face pressure from many dierent angles and it can be very dicult for them to nd their own way. Fr. Sinisa reminds teens that their faith in God is what is most important in their lives—not grades, appearance, or popularity. “We as priests have to help the kids to remember that their dignity does not lie in those pursuits, that their dignity always lies in the fact that they are made in the image and likeness of God.”

Fr. Sinisa is actively working to help teens open their hearts and minds to God’s mercy, which is transforming the way they see themselves and the world around them.

To help ensure priests like Fr. Sinisa are cared for as they live out their vocation, please support the special collection on September 16-17.

“e people of God need to be guided by pastors whose lives are spent in service to the Gospel.”

- Pope Francis
