I am having a hard time believing it, losing such a wonderful man. Larry loved life! Everything he did, he did to the best of his ability. He will always be remembered as a Marine, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a great grandfather. As his wife, I can assure you that he did everything to provide for and take care of his family and loved ones. Larry loved everything he’s ever done and accomplished, he gave it everything he’s got. He was an excellent businessman, captain, and most recently Commodore of our Benicia Yacht Club. He loved this club and everyone in it. Through all the challenges that arose he always wanted us to come together and enjoy the relationships we have here. The cruise outs were always his favorite, but the functions and activities of this club and all his friends were what he enjoyed on a daily basis. The staff and all of our members were his main concern, that everyone appreciated the company of one another and enjoyed themselves at all of our gatherings. “For the good of the club” was what he always said and he felt that all the way through to his core. We will all miss him. Those wild stories, those heartfelt speeches, those crazy faces, and most of all that infections smile. I personally am left with a large hole from the loss of my best friend and love. Please smile often, enjoy one another and love with all you’ve got! For the Good of the Club! Larry has sailed off to calmer waters.

Roger Lawrence Booth, better known as Larry, a man who has touched so many.

On March 18, 2018 Larry went home to be with the Lord.

“Larry”

Dear Friends,

After a short illness, our Commodore passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2018. He was 80 years old though you would never guess it. He was one of those people who made everyone he met feel welcome.

I have decided not to write about Larry here other than to say I’m going to miss him. Our Club has lost a leader who really loved being part of this Club. He embodied the phrase “for the good of the Club”. I saw him time and again come into the club and “work the room”. He would greet every member and introduce himself to anyone in the room that he didn’t know. We all felt comfortable around him. Larry had nothing but the best interest of the club in his heart and he worked tirelessly to make the club a better place for all.

Sunday April 22nd, 2018 will be the 11th running of the “Run for Education” a major fundraising event to benefit the Benicia Unified School District! Please support our schools by sponsoring or running/walking this fantastic annual event!

From now until the race, runners have the opportunity to train at the brand-new Benicia High School track for the five weeks preceding the event. See website link for more details and training schedule. Even if you are not going to run, please invite friends and family from anywhere to join. We have runners from all over the state come to this event.

Please come out and support this worthwhile fundraising event! Registration is now open at www.beniciarunforeducation.org. Registration can be done on the site, by mail or in person the day of the race.

The BEF Run for Education is a fantastic, family-friendly event for first-time runners to expert athletes. Proceeds from this event benefit the Benicia Education Foundation, a volunteer-run, community-based non-profit organization that helps fund programs and services in the Benicia Unified School District.

All events highlight Benicia's rich history starting from the beautiful First Street Green. Both the 5K and 10K courses are certified by the USATF and professionally, chipped timed. Participants will pass historical sights, gorgeous Victorian homes and breathtaking views of the Carquinez Straight. The 10K course takes runners into the beautiful Benicia State Park, while the Kids' Fun-Run, open to children ages 12 and under, runs from the Marina Green down to the Pier and back.

After the festivities, we would like to invite everyone to stay and enjoy your morning and day in Benicia. With great parks, restaurants, shopping, art, museums, marina and rich history, everyone is sure to find something fun to do.

For Commodore Larry Booth:

To be read during the Eight Bells ceremony at the Benicia Yacht Club.

Prepared by Staff Commodore; Paul Brighton

Members of Benicia Yacht Club, we have lost our Commodore Larry Booth.

He has embarked on his Þnal voyage, he will be missed by all. The tide of life has ebbed for our shipmate, and we his fellow members have gathered to honor his memory with eight bells.

Commodore Larry Booth was a valued member of our club. He gave abundantly of his time, talent and knowledge to further its interest and the interest of his shipmates upon the vast seas of life.

Commodore Larry Booth accomplishments are permanently inscribed in the archives of our Club and in our hearts.

Larry set lofty goals for us, and now the Supreme Navigator of the universe has called him home, to other duties, and to sail in eternal calm waters, forever free from the tempest of mortal life.

We are faced with the great task of trying to Þll his place, and while we honor and cherish his memory, we do not mourn for him for he has found refuge in the great harbor of eternal peace.

Rather, we mourn ourselves, for a good friend has slipped the moorings of life and has crossed to the bar on the outgoing tide.

He is no longer among us, and we will miss his smiling face and his hand on the helm, and his shoulder next to ours. Most of all, we will miss his encouragement and as we continue to meet the storm and strife of this life.

Larry, may the winds of heaven blow softly and whisper in your ear how much we love and miss you and wish you were here.

House Committee Report Keeping the BYC Club House Healthy

There are many buildings in the city Benicia with history, character, and stories to tell.  These attributes are just a few of the many things that lend charm to this city and contributes to Benicia’s appeal as a place to live and visit.  The Benicia Yacht Club is one of those storied buildings and sitting majestically at watch over the Benicia Marina, is many times one of the faces of the city. As such we have a community responsibility to maintain our curb appeal.

Our First Saturday of the Month maintenance program is working well to identify repair and maintenance issues and to keep the expected problems with a building of this age in check. But what also comes with a building of this age are problems that require building restoration and preservation, and we have a growing list of projects that needs to be addressed. For these projects we need teams to develop scopes and budgets, develop an action plan, and establish the priorities for Board consideration.

Within our membership there are many opinions, ideas, and bar-side conversations that offer direction for our restoration efforts and they all have merit. So, if you are passionate about how we proceed with preserving our historic building, please pick up the torch. We need and want everyone’s vison, expertise, commitment and participation to get projects moving forward. A list of the projects currently on our agenda are listed below. To join a project team, please contact the House Committee at [email protected].

Thanks – House Committee

BYC HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE TO ENJOY

BY ALAN ZADA

February bingo night was a great success, it was taco night and we had over 45 people (biggest bingo night yet) come and play bingo and enjoy a fun evening with great food and great friends. Please come over and bring your friends on the last Wednesday of each month and enjoy the club, bingo is free and you can win gift cards to the club.

Try out trivia every Tuesday night, a fun night starts with a potluck at 6 pm followed by trivia at 6:30 pm. Different formats and different trivia hosts make each week a new and challenging experience. Come on down and join your fellow members and see how much you have forgotten, you don’t need a team since we can pair you up with other teams, this is a great way to meet other members. You can even host trivia and come up with your own questions to try to stump your fellow members. Come on down and have fun.

The BYC has at least one major event each month for our members to enjoy, from the Crab Feed to a Murder Mystery Dinner to Oscar Night, bring your friends down and enjoy one of the great events at the club. I promise you, you will have a great time and your presence helps the clubs bottom line.

If you have any ideas for new events, we would love to hear about them. Please email a board member or come to a board meeting and let us know what your idea is, we would love to hear from you.

A great way to give back to YOUR club is to come on down on the first Saturday of each month at 8 am and help maintain your club. You don’t have to be handy or in great shape, just come on down spend an hour or two painting, cleaning or trimming bushes, we need you. There something for everyone and every ability to do to help keep YOUR club at tip top shape.

See you at the club.

Dear Members and Friends,

We wanted to THANK the members and our friends who came out to help Youth Sailing and House Committee with the rehabilitation to the sailing barge. First, without Randy Norman’s request to the BOD’s for help with the project, the work may never have gotten done. Thank you Randy for planning this job, we know how much work we have to do around the clubhouse, and two weekends is a lot of time.

The work was overdue, as the barge was built many years ago and unsafe, we could not have hosted YS lessons this summer without the work being done.

The Þrst weekend everything from the sailing barge was brought up to the YC lawn where a crew cleaned, rigged, Þxed broken parts, numbered each boat and that boats daggerboards and rudders, they then de-rigged, stacked them and put away all of the parts. While that was going on, another crew demolished the top of the barge and hauled away all of the debris. It was physical labor, it was hard work. We appreciate and thank all that helped. This work was a huge help to our club, our barge, our ßeet and to the BYCÕs YS program.

The Þrst weekend we had the help of one of our non-member sailing families, Evy, Wim, Yosse and Pauline Ballegeer. Thank you Ballegeer’s! Also helping were Pat Shue, Rich Grigas, John Kitchen, Richard Boltz, Robert Cates who also provides some delicious breakfast treats and coffee. Also helping were youth sailing Instructors Ken Vanstory, Bob Hall, Tim Rose and me.

The second work weekend was just as much work. We rigged, Þxed and replaced worn parts to the remaining 8 DeWitt Dinghies. We then moved all of the 11 Opti’s, the DeWitt dinghies, the rudders and daggerboards that go with each boat, and all of the YS equipment back onto the barge. It takes at least two people to get one of those small boats through the gate and onto the barge… a lot of back breaking work. Thank You so much to these people who came out the second weekend. They were Rich Grigas, Pat Shue, Steve Gilliland, Bob Bohnet, Randy Norman, Richard Boltz, Mark Connors, and Youth Sailing Instructors John Dillow, Barbara Fredericks, Ken Vanstory, Tim Rose and Me.

The Benicia Marina Corporation donated the materials and the labor to replace the top to the barge, saving us money and time. They used wood that will last much longer than the material that YS was planning on using. We cannot thank them enough for all they do for the Yacht Club and for Youth Sailing year round, THANK YOU!

The Delta Marina Rio Vista Cruise Out Report When you are blessed with wonderful, cheerful, energetic, creative cruising companions at a gracious venue, with oil flat water and beautiful weather, success is assured. A few days before departure with rain and wind in the area, and snow in the mountains - the prognostication was not good and we nearly cancelled the cruise. Tenacity and patience has its virtues.

In all we had ten boats- mostly filling the available Marina guest docks. Five arrived Thursday, March 8, taking advantage of the great rate we were offered as a club ($27 per boat per night) including Inn Seclusion (Jerry Morgan & Patti), Fantasy (Paul & Pat Brighton), Go With the Flow (Ken Oxman with Ross “Land Cruising”), On a Whim (Don & Sally Radigan), and Seasons (yours truly, Bill & Sheryl Pangman). Following an informal gathering on Seasons, a quaff or two, and introductions to “Can You Top That?”- real life boating adventure stories from our intrepid cruisers (with promises of awards for the most “inspiring” - see Saturday night below), we enjoyed a dinner at The Point Restaurant, just a few feet from the docks.

On Friday, we were joined by Karma (Don & Deb Murray), Delfini (Armand & Cynthia Seguin), Get Away (Brook Seymour- with Melody following by land), and La Familia Cocina (TJ and John Kitchens), and our fun, energetic and animated new cruising couple on Eagles Landed (Greg and Becky Johnson). Their boat is a sleek 40’ Sea Ray – straight out of “Star Wars” which we tracked on AIS up the Sacramento River at 21.8 Knots. Our Land Cruisers were Steve and Dee Gilliland, and Bob and Rachele Bohnet-

24 stalwart souls in all.

The Delta Marina provided a large covered and well equipped patio area (at no charge) for a 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. (or later) party with cruisers bringing “heavy Hors d’ oeuvres” (which were varied and scrumptious) along with bountiful adult beverages. At that venue, we were regaled by “stories of cruising adventures” from local to far flung - with a theme of the divergence between the “guy’s version” and the “gal’s version” of (supposedly) the same event told through often very different “perspectives”- some might say “different planetary orbits”- (no hyperbole here). The stories provided lots of good humor and a shot at success at the “Awards Dinner” scheduled for Saturday night.

During the day on Saturday, about 14 of us headed into Rio Vista (less than a mile, walk, bicycle ride, car ride) to Foster’s Bighorn Restaurant (you just have to see it! - words are so inadequate). We thought we would have to compete with a classic car club occupying about 50 tables “upstairs” but the seas parted and at least 14 barstools opened up- all together, where we enjoyed lunch, and, yes - some “hair of the dog” or who knows what, given the décor. Great fun.

Saturday afternoon the “girls” gathered on “Go With the Flow” to share who-knows-what-stories. The guys, including yours truly were neither invited nor welcomed, (an ex post facto observation which may- but probably not, be denied). It must have been the nautical analogue of #me too, sailor. You will just have to ask one of them.

About 5:30 Saturday night we adjourned to our private “Stern Room” dining area in The Point Restaurant for, you guessed it, cocktails, followed by a great dinner and the “Awards”.

Ross, Ken, Sheryl and Bill met earlier in the day as “totally unbiased, ethically pristine judges” (well that’s our story and we are sticking to it) to identify the overarching themes of each of the contest winners, which, following dinner, were awarded as follows: “Captain Ron”, and “Nature Abhors a Vacuum” went to – you guessed it – Steve and Dee Gilliland. There was not any disagreement between Steve and Dee on the underlying facts- Dee thinks she remembers being at each rather spectacular event, the latter requiring (or should have required) hazmat intervention. (Hint- don’t anchor

among Neanderthals, and holding tanks are dangerous weapons.)

“Do Not Get Off This Boat” and “I Don’t Know the Man” went to Deb and Don Murray. Deb did most of the events’ recitations and was awarded a Bourbon cask aged Cabernet to accompany her in her new motorhome adventures, while Don and Roxy keep Karma afloat and ship-shape for Deb’s periodic home-port visits while she wanders the wilderness of the wild west. (Hint- Docking in 50 knot wind is challenging, and be sure you check the resume (and international rap sheet of your

cruising companions.)

“Brunhilda and the Smuggler” was proudly won by Jerry Morgan and Patti McKay, with Patti confirming it happened as she remembers through her tears, shredded flowers, confiscated limes and their Nexus pass. (Hint- don’t mess with Canadian customs officers, of the female persuasion).

“The Dream Voyage and the Nightmare” stood out as the most theatrically meretricious, hysterically funny, the most witness divergent and went to our newest cruising companions, Greg and Becky Johnson. (Hint: You just have to ask them!).

Following the dinner and awards, several of us adjourned to the bar area for more stories and comradery before confronting the harsh reality of Daylight Savings and the end to a time of

merriment and aquatic companionship.

Sunday Morning at the planned departure hour of 11 A.M. to the shock of our seasoned cruisers (who know that the first engine fires up about 20 minutes ahead of the “agreed time” and the docks are a blizzard of activity. Not so this on this cruise. Perhaps as we age we are getting, err.. more mature?

The trip home was delightful with one Post Script: One of our very experienced members, who shall remain anonymous (probably for about 15 seconds)- decided that “heck- the waters surrounding the Federal munitions dock at Port Chicago are “navigable waters”, whatever maritime legal significance that phrase may possess, and the unnamed mariner ventured in closer than a Federal Gun Boat (whose occupants may have been having a slow Sunday) apparently appreciated and they intercepted the “trespasser”, threatened arrest, seizure, and (either $35,000 or a $3,500 according to the “source”) Fine, this being second hand, who knows). After a polite but very direct “chat” our companion and boat were released with a warning and a citation. The “take-away”: stay well off Port Chicago, and definitely in the outer channel if a ship is in port. Thanks “anonymous” for the graphic object lesson.

On Monday, Sheryl and I headed home to the Sierras where we were greeted by one of the common winter challenges, snow and a massive rock slide blocking our road.

‘Til next time … “Happy Cruising ”Bill and Sheryl Pangman M/V Seasons

St. Patrick’s Day Party at the Club

by Jackie Ramos

St Patrick’s Day came and went in a swath of green as the Benicia Yacht Club celebrated the “Green Holiday” in fine style. All the dining tables were adorned with green and white center pieces. Carlos and company put together a really delicious corn beef and cabbage dinner to kick off the party. More than 90 members and friends enjoyed dinner in the Regatta Room before moving upstairs for some dancing and fun. Thank you to Carlos, Pedro and Joanne in the kitchen, Cheyenne and Anne Marie for serving, and Lisa and Jeannie for keeping the cocktails moving, (Alas, no green beer!)

Upstairs in the Norton Lounge the party continued. A lot of green was floating around upstairs including flowers, lanterns, garlands around the posts, and “jewelry” for the ladies, the best the dollar store had to offer!!! Nicky-D, one of our favorite entertainers, played and sang for the party, keeping the dance floor full most of the evening. There were several members who dressed up for the costume contest. A couple of anonymous participants judged the costumes. Rick Linn won the male competition (again) for his kilt and bare knees and his sword. Angela Grigas was the winner of the ladies’ competition. Angela was in a created-by-Angela black outfit with green boots. Both winners received a bottle of wine, donated for the occasion. Thanks to everyone who participated.

A fun time was had by all thanks to the folks who pitched in to help. Thanks to TJ Kitchen, Ross Oxman, Susan Linn, Eve Norman and Kathy Monroe for help with decorations. I know I have forgotten some folks, for that I apologize. It is always the volunteers that make these events a success.

An apology to any of you whose articles did not make into last months WW. Biography’s for the candi-dates took up a bit of space in the last edition and we could not get all of the stories in, we have included your articles in this edition.

There is a lot of work that goes into getting the Wind Word to you. With each edition that I have done, it has gotten easier, though it is still very time consuming. I am hoping that there is a member out there that would consider coming on board to help with putting out the WW in 2015. I am willing to help you get started! I also encourage having a team to sell advertising to defray the cost of future editions.

With that said, I am concerned that the WW is set to go on line only. It has been a topic of discussion before my taking over for HR as Editor. My concern is for the many members who do not have internet access and those not familiar with the internet itself, that may not search for the BYC website and the Wind Word. Without the phone tree, our only news update to our members is the Scuttlebutt, also an

internet based informational blast.

It would be much more cost effective to post on line only. Would you go on line and read it? Would you miss getting this in the mail and reading it as a print material? Think about that and let the board know your thoughts about the Wind Word’s future.

Because of the low number of readership that we have, membership is just over 200, we are not in competition with other local newspapers and publications as far as advertising goes. I do believe that we could do a better job to gain advertisement with our low costs and help defray the cost of this paper. If you would like to advertise and would like more information, please feel free to contact me or the board about this matter. .... Contact Mike Mathews at 707-745-0610.

I will be accepting LETTERS TO THE EDITOR about the future of the WW and anything else that you would like to discuss.

As I mentioned before, I would love to hear from you. All articles will be considered for print though member and mariner related articles will take priority and preference.
