Rotary District 5330 ● Home of a Million Acts of Service

We have met the Bill Gates challenge!

Rotary has exceeded the Bill Gates $200 million challenge by more than two million dollars for the eradication of Polio. We are “over the hump” in the eradication of Polio, but we still need to continue to raise funds to get to the very end of our race for eradication. Move your fingers closer together when you say “We are this close!”

Rotary celebrates India’s first polio-free year

There were only four remaining countries in the world with polio, commonly referred to by the acronym PAIN. India has just completed a polio-free year. This leaves Pakistan, Afganistan and Nigeria as the only remaining countries with polio (either PAN or NAP—you choose).

Rotary Four-Way Test Of the things we think, say or do …

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Red Badge Update Red Sullivan, Red Badge Chairperson

When a new member is inducted into the Menifee Rotary Club, he or she receives a Rotary Pin and a name badge which is tagged with a Red Badge. What does that mean and how is that different from the other members? Hopefully, the Active Members know the answer to this question; however, if you are a new member, you may wonder why you have a Red Badge and how do you have it removed? Presently we have six new members who need to complete Rotary Activities to satisfy the Red Badge requirements. They are Ruth Bol (Paul), Roseanne Jackson (Joe Smolinski), Tony Rosilez (Jonathan/Linda C), Ivette Taylor (Bill Vincent), Norm Walker (Charlie) and Charlie Wilhite (Linda D). On January 19, I met with Ruth, Charlie and Tony to discuss the Red Badge requirements. Interestingly, they have completed several of the requirements. Here is a checklist with 10 categories that must be completed to remove the badge:

Attend a new member orientation meeting Get a Live Scan Read two or more of the Rotary booklets which we provide Attend one or more club functions Attendance at 90% of weekly Rotary Meetings during the first 90 days Give a classification talk at a club meeting Complete three or more tasks at a Rotary Meeting (i.e., Serve as a Greeter) Bring a guest or propose a new member Experience an International function Attend one or more District Meetings.

Once these items have been completed, they are checked off, signed and filed, so that person be-comes a regular member. Note to Sponsors, you are also required to assist the person you sponsor in meeting the criteria to re-move the Red Badge. (I would hate to tell the Fine Master you were remiss in assisting your new member.) I am planning to have more meetings with the Red Badgers, so that they and their sponsors are aware of the requirements. Please feel free to contact me for the Check Off list or more information. I am hoping that these six members will have their status to full member by June 30, 2012.

On January 26, the Menifee Union School District Spelling Bee brought together fifty 4th through 8th grade students who had already won first place at their respective elementary or middle schools. The competition was to choose the district winner who will go on to Riverside County Spelling Bee on March 21, 2012. Rotary Club of Menifee provided the ribbons for all participants and trophies for the Grand Champion and Runner-up. After 2 hours, the winner rose to the top: Emily Africa, 4th grader from Oak Meadows Elementary School. Alyssa Tillett was the Runner-up, a 7th grader from Hans Christiansen Middle School.

A Thank You to the Quail Valley Crime Watch Red Sullivan

Our Rotary Club was able to collect two boxes of food, along with a check, as a thank you to the Quail Valley Crime Watch for the Pancake Breakfast at last year’s Menifee Motor Madness. I was able to give these items to Leah and Earl McGee a couple of weeks ago. I was really thrilled to learn that the food and check would be going to a single mother with three children who needed them. When Leah told me about the family who would receive the items that day, we were all in tears. It was a true Rotary Moment with the Spirit of Service Above Self to know that our Club made a differ-ence with this family. The Children were excited about the boxes of Mac and Cheese, as well as a few other items. Thank you for your donations to this family.
