PROJECT APPROACH |

Fundamental to JKAE’s service model is our collaborative approach to School Planning and Design where we demonstrate leadership in developing innovative solutions for our educational clients. We believe this approach will assist Dixon USD move forward with construction in the shortest timeframe possible.

COLLABORATIONWe believe in a collaborative approach to Architecture, Design and Engineering. One of our beliefs is that we must give back to our community. We have found that when community is involved, design solutions tend to evolve in a more logical way to naturally address community values and sensibilities. We will meet with District representatives and your community regarding project status.

INNOVATIONWe are never satisfied with the status quo and feel an obligation and sense of responsibility to innovate. Schools are eager to bring 21st Century innovation into the classroom to expand the learning experiences of children beyond the four walls of the classroom, outward to the greater world beyond. The classroom of the 21st Century should look and operate much differently than a traditional classroom and should afford students and teachers flexibility and options for interactive learning that reflects the current “connected” world we live in.

We have completely integrated Building Information Modeling (BIM) into our architectural and engineering practice in order to supply our clients with advanced, integrated design and documentation practices to ensure quality facilities where sustainable design elements are seamlessly integrated into projects and cost-effective design solutions are successfully accomplished.

LEADERSHIPWe seek to become our clients’ Trusted Advisors. In this “knowledge economy” there is no substitute for expertise and experience. JKAE is led by a seasoned leadership team. Jordan Knighton brings over 30 years of experience and expertise to our educational clients. Jordan’s experience with Community-based planning has been recognized at local, State, and Federal levels for its effectiveness and collaborative uniqueness. For example, Jordan’s efforts in local school planning in the acclaimed publication “Schools as the Center of Community”, were recognized by the US Department of Education and the White House. In addition, Derek Labrecque and Chris Vicencio both bring over 20 years of experience and have carried on Jordan’s Community-based planning approaches in our School and Civic projects statewide.

As the President-Elect for the Association for Learning Environments, Derek brings expertise in local, national and international educational pedagogy and resources to support facilities for the 21st Century.

COST-EFFECTIVE & EFFICIENT DESIGN The designs we produce for our clients are tailored to their respective needs and goals. With the current economy, we are aware of how imperative it is to maintain the strict budget our K-12 Districts possess. Cost-effective designs that provide safe, secure, inviting, and stimulating school environments is not negotiable. Schools must be durable, easily maintained, efficient to operate, and meet budget guidelines. For all these reasons, we have become school delivery experts that utilize materials requiring minimal maintenance. We offer layouts that can be easily transformed as curriculum needs change and add simple, sustainable attributes such as high-efficiency systems or classroom daylighting to reduce operational costs, all while offering safe and secure learning environments.

SUSTAINABLE & ENERGY EFFICIENT DESIGN Sustainable design is an integral part of every school project. Each District may not have the same level of commitment to sustainable design, therefore we offer an expansive menu of sustainable design services. If your District seeks CHPS or LEED certification for any project, we can ensure your goal is met. Most recently, our New Technology High School project with Napa Valley USD achieved LEED Gold certification and our Ashland Youth Center project with the County of Alameda achieved LEED Platinum certification. We have also developed projects measuring sustainable design practices against CHPS guidelines. We recently completed a Sustainable District Wide Facilities Master Plan, recognized as a first in the State of California, for Sacramento City Unified School District, which was largely based on CHPS criteria. Although our firm carries CHPS and LEED credentials, we believe every project can achieve a cost effective level of sustainable design performance by paying close attention to daylighting opportunities, building orientation and appropriate façade design, materials selections that honor recycled content and local sourcing, sensitive site and landscape design that minimizes water use and serves to handle and filter storm-water runoff on site, as well as low VOC content materials that have been proven to be especially important in environments designed for children.

VALUE PLANNING & ENGINEERINGValue planning involves not only cost tracking but also a keen focus on cost-effective design approaches. We recommend building modest contingencies into the project budget that will vary depending on phase

PROJECT APPROACH | of the project and project type. However, we realize that sometimes client goals can adjust over time and are prepared to make value engineering modifications as our clients and their budgets demand. We include our entire engineering team in these VE exercises, including our cost estimator who will always be integral to JKA’s costing and VE support.

COST ESTIMATINGOur team is highly experienced and has been successful in meeting our client’s budgets due to our diligent cost estimating approach. We will provide cost estimates that take into account the local market at several phases in the project. Our cost estimates will also include a comprehensive estimating of Hard Construction Costs, Project Soft Costs, and Total Project Costs so the District is well informed on estimated Total Project Costs. This comprehensive cost estimating approach, in tandem with JKAE’s quality documents, results in projects with below-industry-standard change orders that meet our client’s budget goals. We strive

to provide designs that support and enhance collaborative learning, technological connectivity, student safety, student & teacher comfort (ambient noise, temperature, and light), and career technology. We have planned several STEM and STEAM focused schools, and consider the planning and development of 21st Century Learning Environments our natural calling. We will collaborate closely with your District to deliver educational facilities that exceed your 21st Century Learning Environment goals.

STATE/LOCAL AGENCIESOur firm has been collaborating with state and local building authorities for over three decades. We have worked extensively with local Building and Environmental Health Departments, as well as with local building authorities and Fire Marshals. Given our extensive DSA and State Agency expertise, we understand how local-authority jurisdiction dovetails with State Agency jurisdictional authority and will know how to schedule and expedite all required reviews to our client’s advantage.

STATE SCHOOL BUILDING PROGRAMThe JK Architecture Engineering team extensive California State School Building Program experience working with dozens of School District clients across the State. We have strong working relationships with California Department of Education (CDE), Division of the State Architect (DSA), Office of Public School Construction (OPSC), and the State Allocation Board (SAB).

We understand how all the departments work together and how to help our client’s navigate the various steps to maximize state funding and keep projects on schedule. We will assist our clients from Site Selection and Approvals via CDE all the way through to Project Closeouts with Certification via DSA. We are DSA experts and can assist our clients on special projects requiring special negotiations with DSA whether it be for special project closeouts, expedited project review, or specialized code analysis for unique code conditions. JKAE’s extensive State Agency expertise and strong working relationships with all the relevant state agencies will benefit our clients.

QUALITY ASSURANCE/CONTROLWe understand the District and Community’s Visions and Goals must be translated successfully into quality construction documents. Our method of translation is to produce comprehensive and well coordinated construction documents and use the most innovative and advanced tools available to produce these documents. We expect our consulting engineers to maintain these same standards as well. This synchronized technical approach to construction documents, along with regular coordination meetings, helps our team to deliver highly collaborative construction documents. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the basis of this technological approach. Chris Vicencio, Partner, leads our Quality Assurance program. Our internal Quality Control, using our firm’s experience and clash-detection aspects of BIM, results in projects with below-industry standard change orders. It is ultimately our strong integration of technology, coupled with our experienced and tested team that allows us to successfully translate concept to reality.

The joint-use gymnasium at Fairview Middle School was a collaboration between the Gonzales USD and the City of Gonzales. Our design team developed the concept for this gymnasium during the District-wide facility master plan as a result of our understanding of the State Funding Program. We approached the District with the opportunity to leverage District funds with additional State funds to design and construct this joint-use facility. Once we successfully assisted the District with the state funding application and the grant was approved, the project quickly moved forward and provides the Middle School and District with a contemporary gymnasium and locker room facility that is also used extensively by the greater community. This project is master planned as part of a larger City civic center project that will include a Library, Community Center, and Aquatic Complex.

Yerba Buena High School | New Student Center & Quad

The Yerba Buena High School Student Center and Quad project is a Design-Build project that is currently in the design development phase. This project provides the foundation for the revolutionary change that is being pursued by the campus. This change is YBHS’s response to meeting the mission of East Side Union High School District’s to “create safe, dynamic and relevant learning environments that inspire critical thinking, problem solving and innovation.” The program includes: administration and learning centers; counseling, discipline and SPARC areas; student union; kitchen and servery; and classrooms and activity space. The design finds a balance of celebrating the clean forms and volumes of the campus while introducing a new simple curved form that creates a new image and invitation into the campus quad.

Kings Beach Elementary School | Campus Modernization

JK Architecture Engineering is pleased to provide services for another TTUSD project, the renovation and expansion of Kings Beach Elementary School. Based on District and school-site committee feedback, the campus requires strategic improvements in providing security and oversight, resulting in the relocation of the main entry and administrative offices. Plans also include an entirely new wing housing four Kindergarten classrooms and four additional classrooms, replacing several portable classrooms currently in use. The expansion affords Music and Project-Based Learning (science lab) to have newly designated rooms of appropriate size within the permanent facility. A new greenhouse and several outdoor learning areas will allow learning to flow outside the classroom. The existing structure will be modernized to incorporate district-standard finishes, technologies, and mechanical/electrical/plumbing upgrades. Site improvements include parking lot/drop-off expansion, safe and accessible sidewalks for pedestrians, decorative and secure fencing, and controlled yet celebrational points of entry.

While conducting the FMP, it became very clear through our assessment efforts as well as the priorities of the community and school site that the parking lot at Pinewood ES was a high priority. Our team replanned the existing site to provide a new entry access that facilitated increased vehicle stacking/drop-off, improved single direction vehicle circulation, expanded parking for visitors, staff as well as location for snow storage. As part of these improvements we addressed only the noncompliant staff and student restrooms to bring these facilities up to current building code. This project was completed in 2013.

Following the passage in 2012 of their $9M Measure K GO Bond, our team collaborated with the District to prepare a facility master plan (FMP). The FMP provided a comprehensive listing of site & facility needs and categorized them associated to the things that needed to be done; the code items, the items that have to be done, the maintenance items and the things PPUSD wanted to do, and elective upgrades. Following the completion of the FMP, the District was able to accurately prioritize their total needs as well as identify existing and potential funding that could be considered to address their facilities- both short and long term. This document has become a road map that is still being used today.

As part of the FMP our team analyzed Pinewood ES, Sierra MS as well as their District Office to document the condition of these facilities and identify the code, maintenance and elective upgrade needs of their campuses. Each school has their own individual detailed FMP that documents the condition of all systems, equipment and has become a road map for maintenance their site and facility assets.

23JK E N G I N E E R I N GARCHITECTURE

DIXON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT VISION | INCORPORATING THE DIXON USD VISIONJK Architecture Engineering is a highly collaborative Architecture & Engineering firm specializing in educational facility design that supports our client’s missions and visions. We believe that our Imagine | Design | Create approach to our client’s projects results in unique and highly customized solutions. We pledge to provide Dixon Unified School District with this level of service and attention to detail, from programming through closeout. We’ve identified several goals that the District appears to be tracking via your LCAP. Here’s how we propose to support these aspects of your educational vision knowing that there will be others we will learn more about as we familiarize ourselves with your community and approach.

“Well rounded and relevant curriculum...”Just as your curriculum must be well-rounded and relevant, your schools must support and enrich the District’s educational mission and vision. JK Architecture + Engineering will engage with the district and your community to understand your goals and tailor your facility designs to help your students learn and achieve. We will collaborate with you to understand the various aspects of your curriculum, what makes it unique, and how the district strives to keep it relevant. We’ll find opportunities where the facility design can provide opportunities for students to engage, explore, question, contemplate, discuss, and test ideas and concepts in a variety of different environments that keep the educational experience relevant and interesting. Frequently, in addition to quality classroom space, this means allowing education to take place throughout the campus in a variety of different settings and contexts.

“Engage all students in learning...”JK Architecture Engineering believes that “form follows curriculum.” What we mean is that the curriculum and intended learning outcomes must drive the design of learning environments. Student engagement and interest is the bedrock to implementing any successful curriculum, so we design spaces that promote engagement via collaborative learning and spaces that foster formal as well as informal collaborative opportunities. The learning environments we design for our clients support collaborative learning via flexible and adaptable planning, use of transparency and color to promote curiosity and interest, sensitive acoustical and lighting design to enhance student comfort, and integrated technologies to support instruction.

“Safe and positive school environments...”School safety should be and is a priority for JK Architecture Engineering. We demand of ourselves campus site and facility designs that are safe, secure and inviting. We collaborate with California Department of Education (CDE) and the Division of the State Architect (DSA) to review campus layouts for alignment with state Education Code requirements, California Building Code, as well as educational best practices. We are engaged with organizations such as CASH and A4LE to stay on top of contemporary educational design practices and approaches. Our decades of experience in school design focusing on site safety and security allows us to blend promising new trends and valuable time-tested approaches. In fact, we were invited to speak recently at the Safe Schools Conference where we presented to school administrators, California Department of Education, and educators our

approach to safe school planning where we demonstrated examples of schools that are designed to maximize safety and securely yet configured to remain inviting and interesting.

“High quality, dedicated, and collaborative staff...”The collaborative process of planning, master planning, educational specifications, and community buy-in is where JK Architecture Engineering thrives. We are passionate about staff engagement and, throughout the planning and design process, look to involve staff in planning and design workshops where we leverage staff input to advance the school planning by utilizing the wisdom and experience of school staff to massage planning concepts and improve the design solutions. This interactive approach to school planning is invaluable in achieving staff buy-in and support. There’s almost never a school project where we don’t come out of a staff-level planning workshop with a better solution than we went into it with.

“Partnerships with parents, businesses, & community...”We will collaborate with District to involve the local community in your school planning to the extent you feel necessary. We strive to deliver projects that the community is proud of. We are experts in facilitation of community forums and presentations whether it be a simple design presentation or a more involved input session for project stakeholders that might involve school staff, students, parents, neighbors, businesses and others. We engage in this process as part of our basic services because we understand the importance to Districts of having community buy in on projects...especially projects that are supported by local bond funds.

“Equitable and meaningful access to technology...”Probably more than any other aspect of our practice, we are most proud of the fact that we have been at the forefront of contemporary educational planning and design for decades. At JK Architecture Engineering, we have a saying that “forms follows curriculum.” The learning environments we design are driven by the needs of the Districts and kids we serve. We strive to provide designs that support and enhance collaborative learning, technological connectivity, student safety, student & teacher comfort (ambient noise, temperature, and light), and career technology. We have planned several STEM and STEAM focused schools, and take the planning and development of 21st Century Learning Environments as our calling. However, we don’t simply incorporate technology for technology’s sake, we incorporate technology that districts have found enhances the learning experience by broadening access beyond the four walls of the classroom. Technology must be flexible, adaptable, and accessible.

LOCAL PRESENCEJK Architecture Engineering serves the greater Sacramento region via our foothill offices in Auburn, California. We have had extensive collaborative success with clients near and along the I-80 corridor in Davis, Winters, Vacaville, Fairfield, Vallejo, Martinez, and Oakland. We often times establish field offices in a District facility during Master Planning and Community Outreach phases to facilitate student, staff, and community participation. We strive to become an integral part of your district and community.
