UJ squash team that won the USSA squash title for the seventh year in a row.

Competing at Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth, the defending champions overcame a spirited challenge from the hosts, Madibaz, to win the final 4-2.

Earlier, UJ eased past Stellenbosch University 5-1 in the semifinals, while Madibaz earned their place in the final by defeating University of Pretoria for the first time at the USSA week.

UJ coach Mike Bester said the final against Madibaz had been “pretty close up to a stage”.

“But our females, who proved to be strong all week, managed to do the business by winning all their matches,” he said.

“We lost a very close match at No 3 in the men’s line-up and also at No 1, but won the No 2 to take the win.”

Although the Johannesburg outfit have dominated for a lengthy period, Bester said the competition at the USSA tournament remained tough.

Seventh consecutive USSA squash title for UJThe University of Johannesburg continued their remarkable domination of the University Sport South Africa squash tournament when they won the title for the seventh year in a row in July 2018.

“In recent years there has been very strong competition from Tuks, Stellenbosch and Madibaz.

“But our strength is the depth that we have in our squad. For instance, last year we were strong in the men’s team, and this year our women’s team was very good, so the one backs up the other.

“I said to my players ahead of the tournament this was going to be a collective effort and that’s the way it turned out.”

While emphasising the teamwork in the squad, Bester said women’s number 1 Alexa Pienaar was a major asset for the team.

“She is top of the tree as far as student squash is concerned and she is a banker for us at No 1.”

Besides spearheading the team event win, Pienaar confirmed her potential by retaining her individual title, a competition played on the first three days of the week.

Bester said the team remained motivated to do well despite their long run of success.

“They were ecstatic after the final and are always focused on trying to maintain the record and to set themselves further goals.”

He added that the key element in their success was the consistency and dedication they showed in training.

“They basically train for 11 months of the year and have December off. Winning USSA for the seventh time in a row is the reward for those efforts.”

At the conclusion of the week, Pienaar was named in the USSA team to compete in the World University Championships in Birmingham in September.

UJ’s Kacey-Leigh Dodd will play Hayley Ward, of Madibaz, to decide the second place in the USSA women’s team.

10-athlete squad dominate in EthopiaThe Federation of African University Sport (FASU) Games were hosted by Mekelle University in Ethopia from 2 to 6 July 2018. UJ Athletics was the only code that took part in the games due to the fact that the other sporting codes were competing in the South African university national championships week. The 10-athlete squad impressed all the African delegates by winning a total of 12 medals and finishing in the overall second place position.

UJ athletes and staff contribute to Team South Africa’s supremacy at the regional CUCSA GamesTeam South Africa is still beaming with pride following their dominant performance at the Confederation of University and College Sports Association (CUCSA) Games that took place in Gabarone, Botswana from 18-22 June 2018.

Both South African women and men’s football teams won gold at the CUCSA Games.

The biennial five-day event, which involves ten nations from southern African taking part in a variety of sporting codes, concluded its 19th edition, with defending champions South Africa once again reigning supreme in both the men’s and women’s events.

Despite partaking in only five of the ten sports on offer, Team South Africa asserted its dominance on the event once more, with the 127-strong delegation bringing home 59 medals in total, including 25 golds, 16 silvers and seven bronzes – an improvement of 28 medals from their championship-winning tally of 31 in Zimbabwe two years ago.

Besides the general management delegation, UJ was represented by students and staff members in athletics, basketball and football:

On the basketball court, South Africa’s women’s team failed to defend their title, as they went down 67-60 to Zimbabwe in the final, despite having beaten the very same side 70-54 in the group stages earning the silver medal. The men’s team made amends however, emerging victorious as they beat hosts Botswana 75-61 in the gold medal play-off.

Finally in the football event, South Africa were victorious in both the women’s and men’s event, the former beating Zimbabwe 4-0 in the final while the men’s team downed Zambia 2-0 to claim the gold.
