CERTIFICATE of ACKNOWLEDGEMENT and UNDERSTANDING

The purpose of this Certificate is to ensure that the student understands the administrative criteria, and academic

responsibilities, listed in the Standards of Progress, required to maintain Veterans Educational Benefits at

Brookhaven College.

I, ______________________________________, acknowledge that I have read and understand the

Academic and Administrative Standards of Progress required for receipt and continuation of Veteran

Educational Benefits with Dallas County Community College District. I further acknowledge that the

Brookhaven College Veteran Services representative has explained the Academic and Administrative

Standards of Progress, as well as answered any and all questions that I may have had, and has answered

those questions to my complete satisfaction. I acknowledge the Academic and Administrative

responsibilities necessary to maintain my Veterans Educational Benefits. In addition, I am aware that

failure to adhere to the established Standards of Progress will jeopardize the continued use of my

Veterans Educational Benefits and could lead to suspension of benefits until such time as those standards

are met. I acknowledge that my eligibility is determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs and that if

my eligibility is determined to be less than 100%, that I am financially responsible for the tuition not

covered by my Veteran Educational Benefits. I acknowledge that I have received, reviewed and

understand the Academic and Administrative Standards of Progress.

Revised: 7/17/15

The following are the academic and administrative standards of progress pertaining to students using Veteran Educational Benefits at Brookhaven College. Failure to adhere to these requirements will result in loss of eligibility to use veteran educational benefits. Failure to achieve and maintain the required academic standards could result in being placed on academic probation or suspension by the school.

Academic Standards of Progress

Hazlewood Act: Students must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) every semester, and students must move forward in their selected program of study. Students must meet all three of the following criteria to be SAP eligible to use the Hazlewood Act: Have a 2.0 Cumulative (overall) GPA, students must complete 67% of all attempted credit hours, and total credit hours cannot exceed 150% of the minimum number of hours required to complete the selected Program of Study (POS).

GI Bill: Students must have a minimum 2.0 cumulative (overall) GPA every semester and students must be in GOOD academic standing to use their GI Bill benefits.

Administrative Standards of Progress

Program of Study Students are required to select a Program of Study in eConnect in order to receive Veteran Educational Benefits. Students are also required to ensure that the classes they register for are part of their current Program of Study, and update the POS as needed, provided they maintain academic progress, and not exceed the 150% of credit hours required to complete that Program of Study.

Out of State Tuition Waivers Students with a Residency Code of 3 on their registration summary must meet the criteria to qualify for In-State tuition and make those changes permanently with the Admissions Office, or submit an Out of State Residency Waiver Request form EVERY semester until their residency code is changed permanently. The VA will only pay the highest in-state tuition rate, the student will be prevented from further registrations due to a tuition underpayment to the college, and be financially responsible for that difference.

Degree Plan (Admissions Office Requirement) Students are required to submit a completed official degree plan form with the Brookhaven College Veteran Services Office.

Certification Veterans using Chapter 30 (Montgomery GI Bill), Chapter 1606/1607 (Reserve Educational Assistance Program) must self-certify their class attendance at the beginning of every month online using the W.A.V.E. website or by calling 1-877-823-2378.

Registration receipt and Certification Request form completed every semester that a student wishes to use their Veteran Educational Benefits to pay tuition. These forms MUST be submitted to the Veteran Services Office before every semester the student wishes to use their educational benefits to pay tuition.

TSI Testing - Developmental Classes Student veterans can claim the military exemption from the TSI (Texas Success Initiative) test by presenting their DD-214 to Admissions. However, the VA requires that veterans who want to enroll in developmental classes [Developmental Math (DMAT), Developmental Reading (DREA), and Developmental Writing (DWRI)] AND were exempt from the testing take the corresponding TSI test PRIOR TO enrolling in the course to show justification, in order for the VA to pay tuition for that course.
