Winner of the YA Book Prize 2016 Winner of The Clip Carnegie Medal 2016

Winner of the CBI Book of the Year Award 2016 Winner of the Clippa Poetry Award 2016

Grace and Tippi don't like being stared and sneered at, but they're used to it.

Grace and Tippi are twins - conjoined twins. And their lives are about to change. No longer able to afford home schooling, they must venture into the world - a world of stares, sneers and cruelty. Will they find more than that at school? Can they find real friends? And what about love? But what neither Grace or Tippi realises is that a heart-wrenching decision lies ahead. A decision that could tear them apart. One that will change their lives even more than they ever imagined.

One is about family, about sisters, about friendship, about love. Tippi and Grace are heroines to root for, both together, and apart. This is a book that goes straight into your heart and once it is there, won't leave. One is a brilliant, beautiful, and heart-wrenching novel that is not to be missed. This book is unusual in that the story is written in free verse. An emotional and different read aimed at students aged 12+. Available in the school library.

Focus on Business & ICT

Business Studies Visit to Coca Cola

On Monday, 5th December 22 our Year 9 Business Studies Tudor Grange students visited the factory of Coke Cola in Milton Keynes to experience a real working factory for one of the biggest businesses in the world. Students learnt about the factory in Milton Keynes and were amazed about how quickly a bottle of Coke is produced - a rate of 5 seconds per bottle from materials to product. Students were then led into the factory itself and saw one of the nine production lines in action. It was certainly very loud and busy!

Students ready for Factory Tour!

Friday lunchtimes Mrs George runs a Computer Club in room IT1 for those interested in all things computers and coding. Students have been taking computers apart to look inside and learn about what makes them work. If any student in Year 7 or 9 are interested in taking Computer Science at GCSE this club is a must!

TGAR 2016 Success Team

Friday, 10th February 2017 a group of Tudor Grange Academy sixth form students will be trying to follow in the success of our Year 13 team last year by competing in the prestigious BASE heat at the University of Warwick on Friday, 10th February 2017. The winners will go onto the National Final in July 2017 including an all-expenses paid overnight stay at the hosting hotel. Good luck to those taking part and hopefully we can share another success story from the Business Department in the next newsletter. For more information please see website http://careers.icaew.com/campaigns/base-competition. Watch this space! The brainchild of an ICAEW member, the BASE competition was created to provide school and college students with a taste of what it’s really like to work as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant. Since its launch as a UK-wide event in 2009, more than 13,000 students have tested their business skills and competed for the prestigious title of BASE National Champions.

BASE Coventry Heat is on…..

It has been a busy week in the Academy, we had our annual Trust review where we evaluated lessons, undertook student voice and inter-viewed staff members. The academy came out really well and we have a really clear vision of our strengths and areas we'd like to continue to work on. This week also saw the second set of Elevate revision sessions for our Year 11 students and sixth form. We are well into exam preparation now and we hope that the students found the revision sessions a useful tool to help aid their revision. On Thursday we welcomed a theatre company in to perform Macbeth for our Year 11 students. This was such a wonderful experience for the students and has really helped them to get to grips with the play. At the end of next week, we will be heading into our half term break, I wish all of our students a restful break and look forward to seeing them all on our return. Jodie

It’s never too early to start revising

Parents—What can you do?

There is a great deal you can do as a parent. You can’t revise for them, however much you’d like to (or not), you can’t take the

exams for them, but you can be invaluable in making the exam process smooth, calm and successful.

Provide a quiet calm environment to revise

Help your child to get in the right frame of mind; be ready for stress but stay calm and help them deal with it; don’t join

the anxiety (even if you feel it)

Help your child plan revision—agree a reasonable programme and help them stick to it.

Provide plenty of food and drink, treats and rewards

Please remember: Don’t hesitate to contact the Academy for help and advice.

Department of Business, ICT & Economics…

Mrs Martha James

Head of Department and Business Studies Teacher

I have taught at Tudor Grange Academy Redditch for 9 years after completing my NQT year at another

Redditch School. I started out as Teacher of ICT and moved into the position of Head of ICT and

currently I am Head of Business, Economics and Computing. I completed my degree in Sports

Management at Coventry University and before I started working in education I spent 18 months at the

University of Warwick working in promotion for postgraduate courses. However, my passion has always

been for teaching “it is in my blood”, and I quickly moved onto a PGCE course at Worcester University.

I love my job and my subject, it changes every day and there are always stories in the news to discuss

and debate with my classes.

Mr Andy Capewell

Economics

I have been teaching at Tudor Grange Academy Redditch for 16 years, in this time I have held several positions that include head of lower school years, college leader and my current post is Head of Year

12. I specialise in teaching Business and Economics in addition to supporting our ASDAN students.

When I’m not teaching I can be found shopping for bargains in the local supermarkets or down Villa

Park supporting the best team in the Midlands.

Mrs Catherine George

I have been a teacher at Tudor Grange Academy Redditch since September 2015. My past employment

have included many roles, including working as a community payback officer for West Mercia Probation.

I am currently the computer science specialist at TGAR.

When I am not teaching I can be found taking my mother out on day trips, always remembering to bring

her back.

Miss Anna Cerrone

Business Studies Teacher

I have worked for Tudor Grange Academy Redditch since September 2015, during this time I have worked with predominately KS4 Business students. I led the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award last year and was keen to accept the opportunity to teach Year 9 Geography this year, as I have a combination of

experience and the love for the outdoors, coasts and the countryside.

Before coming to Tudor Grange, I worked in education for a number of years teaching Business Studies to both KS4 and KS5. My previous career was in market research where I co-ordinated large scale research projects into social housing. I have also had experience of working as a merchandiser for an

outdoor clothing company.
