THEMAHLEREXPERIENCE
SATURDAY 27 NOVEMBER - SATURDAY 11 DECEMBER 2010
The Australian International Summer Orchestra Institute provides exciting training to aspiring pre-professional orchestral musicians.Through working with acclaimed conductors, soloists and instrumental tutors, the AISOI provides superb training and concert experience to young musicians. For two intensive weeks, young musicians from around Australia and overseas participate in a tremendous program of rehearsals, masterclasses, orchestral sectionals and performances with international guest conductors, soloists and leading Australian tutors drawn from the major symphony orchestras of
And so has ours. Gustav Mahler, whose compositions were broadly ridiculed by the establishment at the time, patiently and confidently responded to such charges with often quoted retort: “my time will come!” Indeed, we have seen over the past 50 years an intensifying reverence for this master composer. Today, it is fair to claim that he ranks as one of the most profound symphonists of all time whose influence ranks as high as Beethoven, Haydn and Brahms. Our time has come, too. Many would have called it an impossible quest to have a high quality orchestral institute based at a university an undertaken from Tasmania. We have found a success attributed to the visionary leadership of the University of Tasmania coupled with the unique attractiveness of Tasmania. So Mahlers time has come and the time for AISOI to bring this mighty voice Tasmania has also. In 2010 AISOI will mount the massive Symphony No. 6, ‘The Tragic ‘. This work calls for an orchestra of quintuple woodwinds, eight horns, quadruple brass, a massive percussion and string section and the famous hammer, the pounding, wooden strokes of which intone the ‘hammer blows of fate’ In the work’s final movement. We have also chosen another major masterpiece by a symphonic genius of the twentieth century - the superb Shostakovich Eighth Symphony. Add to this works by Knehans, Part, Elgar, Britten and Strauss and it adds up to an exhilarating two weeks in Hobart His time has come and our time has come.

THEVERDEHRS
Violinist Walter Verdehr and his wife, clarinettist Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr, are the two founding members of the acclaimed Verdehr Trio. With the assistance of Michigan State University, where they are faculty members, they have commissioned over 100 new works for clarinet, violin and piano trio. Composers who have written for them include Alan Hovhaness, Karel Husa, John McCabe, Giancarlo Menotti, Thea Musgrave, Ned Rorem and Gunther Schuller, Richard Mills, Peter Sculthorpe and Douglas Knehans. The Verdehr Trio has undertaken many world tours, appearing not only as a chamber ensemble but as soloists in several triple concertos written for them. AISOI 2008 will see the premier of a double concerto they have commissioned just for violin and clarinet from AISOI Artistic Director Douglas Knehans.
