The Broad Art MuseumTransforming the Face of MSU and the Region

    Focus.September.2012

The arts and Michigan State University have both played a major role in the li eo Eli Broad. The highly success ul businessman/philanthropist and his wi eEdythe elt that a great university needs a great museum, so the couple tookaction to make that dream a reality. The Broads donation o $26 million, thelargest individual cash gi t in MSU history, has led to the construction o a new

world-class art museum on the MSU campus.

Speaking rom personal experience, the arts have played a trans ormative

role in my li e, even though they were not at the center o my studies at MSU,said Eli Broad. This museum and the iconic building that will bring it toli e will also serve as an important new resource or the people o centralMichigan, making great art accessible to the millions o people who live and

    work within the region.

Still two months be ore its November 9 grand opening, it is already obviousthat the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum will have a trans ormational impact on Michigan State University and the Greater Lansing region. The striking, contemporary architectural design created by world-class architect Zaha Hadid

creates a wow actor that dramatically changes the Grand River/Collingwoodentrance to MSU.

This vibrant design will engage the campus and community and inspireeveryone who enters, said MSU President, Lou Anna Simon.

The new building is also constructed in a way so that it serves as aconnecting link between MSU and the City o East Lansing, complete withtwo ront doors one acing east and the other west. The Broad Art Museumis the rst building at MSU that doesnt ace in towards the university.

Were trying to say through the architecture that its a very public place whereeveryone will eel welcome, said Michael Rush, the Broad Art Museumsounding director. Its a very strong interaction between MSU and the

    community.

The interior o the building also makes a very strong architectural statement unlike anything seen be ore in the region or the country. Broad Art Museum is

approximately 46,000-square- eet in area and is comprised o three levels lower level, ground foor and second foor. Two-level spaces provide dramaticviews. The iconic design is constructed o steel and concrete with a pleatedstainless steel and glass exterior. The building is adjoined by an expansiveoutdoor sculpture garden as an extension o the east entrance, and by a largepedestrian plaza at the west entrance.

The Broad Art Museum will be devoted to exploring modern and contemporary

works, post 1945. Rush notes that Broad has also inherited a world-classhistoric collection o art rom MSUs Kresge Art Museum, which he says willmake Broad Art Museum unique among contemporary art museums in itsability to rame the broad range o contemporary art practices with a rmhistorical context.

Were going to show a very dynamic cross-section o art rom around the world, said Rush. This will continue to enhance MSUs status as a globalleader.

The stature o the Broad Art Museum project and Michigan State Universitysdeep commitment to establishing a world-class art museum has enabled MSUto attract a richly experienced pro essional sta , including Michael Rush as

    ounding director.

Rush oversaw a signi cant collection o modern and contemporary art inBrandeis, near Boston, and was widely recognized or his leadership duringa controversial attempt by the university to sell the art collection and close themuseum. He was also the director o the Palm Beach Institute o Contemporary

Art, has lectured internationally on art andmuseum practices, and has received

awards rom the International Associationo Art Critics or his curatorial projects.

Among other highly respected sta members joining the Broad Art Museumis Allison Gass, named curator o contemporary art. Gass, who was nameda young curator to watch by The New YorkTimes, serves as the assistant curatoro painting and sculpture at the San

Francisco Museum o Modern Art.It is a rare opportunity to come intoa community and lead something theuniversity deeply wants, said Rush.Everybody wants to be here.

The Broad Art Museum is already changing the way the world views MichiganState University and the Greater Lansing region. The Broad project has generateda multitude o news stories rom media outlets worldwide. Rush says peopleare waking up to the act that something very exciting is happening.

Just by virtue o its presence, the museum is turning people on to what MSUand the region are about, said Rush.

What does the term, world-class community conjure up in your mind? Imsure we could quickly agree on many characteristics including jobs, qualityschools, good, a ordable housing, strong neighborhoods, sa e streets, great parks, culture, entertainment options, clean environment, etc.

Have you ever thought about what di erentiates an average communityrom a world-class community? How does a region go rom good to great?

No doubt, we can come up with a long list o possibilities, but let meo er our characteristics that are not only essential, but I believe are thedi erence-makers that can set a community apart rom the rest.

Bold leadership. Vision. Willingness to change.collaBoration.

I believe the opening o the Eli and Edythe Broad Museum on the campus

o Michigan State University is a prime example o the type o leadership, vision, trans ormational change and collaboration that could lead theregion into new 21st century economic and cultural rontiers.

It started with the vision o Eli and Edythe Broad who had a dream o unitingtheir love or the arts and Michigan State University. Bringing the dream toreality was helped along by the strong leadership o MSU President Lou

Anna Simon and others at the university who brought in a world-classarchitect, Zaha Hadid, to design a museum unlike any other. It also took aMSU community that was willing to accept a design that was dramatically

di erent than anything constructed at the university in its long history. The Broad Museum has drawn widespread attention rom media outlets

world-wide. It is expected to attract visitors rom around the globe. Themuseums economic impact is already being elt throughout the region and

will only grow, as new businesses open nearby and tourism dollars fowinto the community. The Broad will also have a signi cant and positiveimpact on the arts community, which will serve to enhance the quality o li e in the region.

The collaboration o community groups assisting in a success ul Novemberopening or the Broad is equally impressive. I want to thank the GreaterLansing Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Greater Lansing Arts Council,LEAP, MSU, the City o East Lansing and the Lansing Regional Chambero Commerce or their e orts behind the scenes to support one o the most exciting projects in our communitys history.

The Eli and Edythe Broad Museum is a museum or the 21st century. It willalso serve as the connecting link to a region that has all the ingredients ora world-class uture.

Michigan Voters Should Voice Support forThe Bridge to the Future

    Focus.September.2012

Michigan voters have an opportunity to speakout in support o the proposed New InternationalTrade Crossing (NITC) by soundly de eating aproposal on the November ballot that seeks toblock the badly needed bridge between Michigan

and Canada. That was the message deliveredrecently in a brie ng to members o the LansingRegional Chamber o Commerce by MichiganLieutenant Governor Brian Calley and CanadianConsul General Roy Norton.

On June 15, 2012, Governor Rick Snyderand Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harperannounced an agreement to build a publiclyowned bridge between Detroit and Windsor,

Ontario. The new bridge will provide a muchneeded alternative at the busiest U.S.-Canadacommercial border crossing, acilitating themovement o people and goods by ensuringborder crossing capacity or the next 125 years.

Since the agreement was signed, the ownerso the nearby Ambassador Bridge bankrolled aballot initiative that would attempt to block thebridge through an amendment to Michigans

Constitution. That issue will appear on MichigansNovember General Election ballot. Even thoughstate o cials say that the November vote wouldnot be legally binding and subsequently beunable to stop the bridge rom being constructed, they do ear a negative outcome would orce longand expensive delays.

Even though we believe the bridge will eventuallybe built, it would still cause signi cant additionallegal expenses and be very costly or the entireproject, said Lt. Governor Calley.

Lt. Gov Calley and Consul General Norton labeledthe massive TV campaign being nanced bythe Ambassador Bridge owners as deliberatelydeceptive, most notably or suggesting that thebridge will cost Michigan taxpayers money.

Michigan taxpayers put no money down and theyassume no liability once the bridge is operating, said Lt. Gov. Calley. Michigan will also receiveapproximately $50 million a year rom tolls oncethe bridge opens.

Lt. Gov. Calley and Consul General Norton hopethat a planned, aggressive campaign in support o NITC will educate Michigan voters to the actsabout the project and encourage the de eat o theNovember ballot proposal.

Its time to end the games and get serious about the project, Consul General Norton told Chambermembers. Every voter in Michigan should be

ully in ormed and be able to reject the olly beingcommunicated in those TV ads.

Michigan and Canada shared $70 billion in tradein 2011, which makes Michigan Canadas largest trading partner. 237,000 jobs in Michigan aredirectly tied to trade in Canada, with an estimated

15,000 o those jobs in Ingham, Jackson andLivingston counties.

Most nations around the world dont share that much trade with each other, said Lt. Gov. Calley.

The Ambassador Bridge is the busiest toll bridgeand has the highest commercial and passengertolls o any border crossing between the UnitedState and Canada. The NITC will allow a greatlyincreased fow o goods between the two

countries and help bring tolls to levels that aremore in line with other border crossings. Some10,000 jobs are expected to be created duringthe our-to- ve years during which the bridge isbeing constructed. Lt. Gov. Calley estimated that

work could begin as early as the spring o 2013.
