The flipped learning approach Wgtn PENZ Cluster: ICT in PE

What is a flipped classroom?

• An inverted teaching model that delivers instruction at home through interactive, teacher created videos.

• "Homework" tasks move to the classroom

Why flip my classroom?

• Teaching was getting stale, I needed something new and challenging

• Students learning at different paces

• Important information not being digested even though students present in class

• Students absent (sport, performances, sickness)

• Students not completing homework (a constant battle I have always had teaching physical education)

• Extra time spent re-explaining concepts to students who don't understand

What convinced me to flip my classroom?

• Flip Your Classroom: Reach Every Student in Every Class Everyday - Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams

• Crystal Kirch: flippingwithkirch.blogspot.co.nz

• Khan Academy

• Apple iPads!!!

What my flipped learning looks like across the week

• Creation of 4-10 minute screencasts every week, uploaded to YouTube for students to access

• Interaction with students via Facebook on a daily basis

• Planning of practical tasks for EVERY lesson

Sample flipped video

What my "theory" lessons look like now

• 0-5 minutes: students straight into small group discussions about the latest video

• 5-15 minutes: each group poses a question (based on the video content) to the remainder of the class that attempt to answer it

• 15-30 minutes: teacher designed focus questions

• 30-60 minutes: practical based activities (usually outside the classroom) allowing students to apply concepts to real world situations

Challenges of the flipped classroom

• Student buy in

• Student access to technology

• Your own confidence around using ICT

• Time to create resources

• Ensuring students engage with the learning style and digest the information / videos / content you provide them with

Ensuring student engagement with videos

• Don't start flipping without full student understanding and buy in

• Teaching students how to watch videos properly

• WSQ sheets to complete while watching the video at home (watch, summarise, question)

• Tracking WSQ sheet completion

Summarising flipped learning

• Not a solution to the worlds problems

• My classrooms are far from stress free

• Students digest teacher created content from home at their own pace

• Concept engagement takes place in the classroom, with the support of peers and teacher

• Every student is thinking, writing, interacting, reading, listening, and speaking - EVERYDAY!!!!
