Norway is a country famous for its spellbinding panoramas and unspoiled natural beauty.

National Geographic Traveler magazine has called Norway the world’s most iconic destination and it is easy to see why. The Western Fjords have the ability to fascinate and inspire and feature prominently in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Some might imagine Norway as a snow-covered tundra where everyone travels by skis. In reality the country is blessed with a fabulous mixture of weather that is a true reflection of the seasons. If you visit from mid-May to late-August you might be surprised at just how many hours of sunshine there are.

For many years only the more intrepid travellers amongst the superyacht fraternity have ventured North to see what Norway has to offer and this has often felt like a journey into the unknown in comparison with the popular cruising destinations of the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

But this kingdom of fjords, steep mountains, waterfalls and glaciers is ideal for cruising a superyacht with destinations boasting modern facilities and very calm waters. So, in order to make this unspoiled utopia an easier place to cruise, several highly-respected business people have joined forces to create Superyacht Norway – a collective effort to represent superyacht-friendly destinations in Fjord Norway and to welcome owners, guests, captains and crew of the world's superyachts to the region (for more detailed information, please see pages 28 and 29).

And don't think you need to own or charter a vessel to take advantage of this amazing destination! Although it is fantastic to experience Fjord Norway onboard a yacht, there are many great hotels available for shorter or longer holiday-stays in the Western Fjord region.

See www.superyachtnorway.com for full details.

fjord norway become familiar with the unfamiliar

It is impossible to do justice to the sheer scale of the Norwegian Fjords in words alone. From the seemingly endless Sognefjord to the powerful Nærøyfjord, Norway is blessed to have such striking tourist attractions.

Simply touring the Western Fjords by superyacht would be enough in it’s own right – around every corner lays another vista, another ‘wow’ moment.

But don't be content staying on the yacht. When you step ashore so many other options open up to you. Such is the diversity of activities on offer that, in just a few days, you could visit an aquaculture farm, join a typical Fjord Norwegian family in a private home visit, fish for salmon or trout, undertake Nordic walking through wondrous landscapes, go white-water rafting or throw yourself off a mountain attached to a parachute. If you want to fit in some skiing or glacier climbing you can do that too, even in the middle of summer!

A trip to Norway’s Western Fjords is more than just a cruise. It contains endless special moments. You have to experience them yourself to understand.

It has been said that the fjords are the soul of Norway and they certainly leave a long-standing impression on the people that visit these most magnificent attractions. When you visit us, you will undoubtedly find that there is so much more to explore.

Norway is a country steeped in tradition, mystery and wonder. The sheer space offered by our green and pleasant lands effuses feelings of calmness and tranquillity that are so difficult to find anywhere else in the world.

Fjord Norway gives you the chance to escape for a while, to embark on a journey with your family and friends is to experience something totally natural and different.

You have to be here to believe it.

fjord norwayoff the beaten track and out of this world

It takes commitment to break away from the regular holiday experiences and to try different things, but the gamble is certainly worthwhile. Journeying to the Western Fjords is a unique experience for both the owner and crew of a superyacht that differs greatly from the typical summer hotspots of the Mediterranean.

But once you are here you will soon realise that you are encountering a country of hidden treasures, a trove of destinations that will seduce every one of your senses.

The space and freedom that opens up before you offers the chance to expand your boundaries. Why settle for the sun-lounger when there are so many thrilling adventures to be had? It's all here – from thundering rapids shooting out from vertical cliff faces to wonderful walking areas around the largest fjords.

There are few places in the world that have suchvaried scenery in one region. You are all that it is missing.

With a history that goes back to the 16th century, Bekkjarvik manages to encompass the ambience of a traditional fishing village with modern day luxuries more normally associated with cosmopolitan cities.

The focal point of this small port is Bekkjarvik Gjestgiveri, a traditional Norwegian Inn which has become one of the coast’s most sought-after destinations and home to chef Ørjan Johannessen, winner of the prestigious Bocuse d'OrWorld 2015. Here you can accompany the inn owners on a guided tour through the village where it’s maritime heritage is revealed in the wonderful fishing museum and shopping complex. Highly recommended is visiting locals in their own homes to experience their traditional lifestyles in authentic surroundings.

As well as the opportunity for relaxation, Bekkjarvik offers many outdoor activities including sea-rafting, cycling, kayaking and panoramic walking tours. For alternative entertainment you can visit one of the impressive hi-tech fish farms that are central to the Norwegian Aquaculture industry.

Or if you would like to try your hand at fishing in a more traditional sense, you can take to the sea with a local fisherman – if you are very lucky a Sea Eagle might join you in search of lunch. If you happen to get a catch of your own, the restaurant will happily prepare your bounty into a delicious fish course, just for you.

At the foot of the Folgefonna glacier, surrounded by majestic mountains and waterfalls, sits Rosendal, Norway’s only barony. This unique village is situated at the very heart of the Hardangerfjord and has become one of the most popular destinations in Fjord Norway.

Easily accessed by helicopter from Bergen, Rosendal offers a compelling range of leisure activities. With Folgefonna providing the stunning backdrop you can climb the third largest glacier in mainland Norway or hurtle down it on the summer ski slopes. You can fish salmon and trout in the lakes and rivers surrounding Rosendal or take to the mountains for autumnal deer-hunting – there is something for all tastes.

For those who prefer to relax, the barony is a great place to meet and listen to good music – or perhaps just take in the sounds of nature. Rosendal offers miles of trekking and cycling paths around the region where you can immerse yourself in the awesome vistas that have stood untouched for millennia.

And all of this can be enjoyed safe in the knowledge that our yacht assistance team are on hand to make your stay fun and trouble-free, from start to finish.

Among the snow-covered mountains, the magnificent waterfalls and the Folgefonna glacier, sits the superyacht port of Lofthus; the perfect base for a rich variety of experiences.

The port is owned by the multi-award-winning Hotel Ullensvang, which has been managed by the same family since 1846. It has developed from a modest guest house to a unique, first class hotel on the banks of the Hardanger Fjord, the 'Queen of Fjords'. The management will personally welcome superyacht guests, assuring them of a discrete service and access to the hotel's many facilities including the excellent bar, restaurant and wine cellar.

Lofthus is the ideal base camp for excursions. You can view awesome waterfalls, take helicopter flights over the Folgefonna glacier and see the famous 'Trolltunga' viewpoint. If adventure is your thing, you can partake in kayaking, rafting, summer downhill skiing, glacier walking and go-karting. Or for something more relaxing, how about a visit to one of the region's many fruit farms to try the freshest of produce.

The musical heritage of Norway has deep roots in the Hardanger area and is one of the reasons why the composer Edvard Grieg chose to live here. The International Hardanger Music Festival takes place during Whitsun every year, and private concerts and folklore dancing can be arranged.

The area has its fair share of celebrity visitors and a frequent guest is Norway's Queen Sonja. We hope that your stay in Lofthus will be like hers – a most memorable one.

Bergen, the ‘Gateway to the fjords’, is a well-established international city combining old-world history and tradition with the very latest trends in dining and shopping. Although physically a big city, visitors often remark that Bergen has the atmosphere of a small-town with the charm to match. As with any major city, Bergen can offer the visitor many things to both see and do. The Fløibanen Funicular smoothly glides to the top of Mount Fløyen, one of Bergen’s seven mountains, from where you can experience a quite breathtaking panoramic view. Down at street level one can wander around the colourful Bryggen port with its ancient wooden buildings so characteristic of Bergen. The old Hanseatic wharf is architecturally unique and is included on UNESCO’s list of world heritage of history and culture. The world-famous Fish Market is also nearby and is worth a visit for anyone with the palette to sample the very freshest of catches.

Welcoming visitors all year round, Bergen will cater for you and your crew and help to make your stay in the fjords an adventure to remember.

At the entrance of the Sognefjord is the municipality of Gulen. This area is famous for the Gulating, considered by historians to be the place where Norway’s Vikings met 1,000 years ago to accept Christianity and establish the foundations of Norwegian law.

The destination of Gulen is a must-visit stop on the way either in or out of the Sognefjord. Steeped in Viking history, Gulen is home to the Gulatinget, which was one of the oldest and largest parliamentary assemblies in medieval Norway.

At the Gulating your hosts at Gulen can arrange an authentic Viking feast, which is perfect as a crew event but is also a great experience for guests looking for unique entertainment. The feast includes all guests costumes and there is welcome show hosted by a Viking who narrates the tales of the area and the Vikings. Guests will experience an authentic BBQ and Viking activities where the final activity is tug of war!

As well as its Viking history, the area also offers fascinating nature adventures such as deep-sea fishing, wildlife safaris and hiking across the striking landscape.

In addition to the berth at Skjerjehamn there are also several natural anchor spots in the area with outstanding surroundings and totally privacy, perfectly suited for an overnight stop.

Sailing further into the fjords of Western Norway will eventually bring you to the Nærøyfjord; 18km long and part of Sognefjord and Aurlandsfjord. And here lie the peaceful little villages of Bakka and Gudvangen, typical of the settlements where the practice of small scale farming is still very much part of daily life.

At Bakka you can experience fjord farming as it has been for many hundreds of years. The surroundings have changed little over the decades with some of the houses dating back to the early 19th century and still very much used by their inhabitants.

Gudvangen is situated at the innermost part of the Nærøyfjord and is home to the famous Viking Heritage Festival and the Magice Caves, an adventure through the labyrinth of naturally white walls, sometimes covered in running water, that give wonderful reflections of colour and shadow shows, with Grieg’s music adding to the atmosphere.

Both Bakka and Gudvangen are great stopping-off points for long mountain hikes where you can gaze down at green-blue fjords or watch the hypnotic tumbling of one of many waterfalls in the area. However, if you fancy something a bit more exciting, adventure sports and activities are common place.

The Aurland municipality, at the southern end of the Sognefjorden, has to be seen to be believed and is an excellent stopover point for walking this famous valley. No visit to the region is complete without a trip to the Stegastein viewpoint, where the views quite simply take your breath away. Or you can visit one of many old churches in the area, with the oldest dating back to 1147.

Flåm is a charming village with a population of approx. 300 residents. Situated at the innermost part of the Aurlandsfjord, Flåm offers some of the most popular attractions in Norway. The world famous Flåm Railway is widely recognized as one of the steepest and most beautiful railways in the world. During the day it can be very popular, however there is the possibility of hiring your very own private carriage.

Flåm is near to the spectacular Nærøyfjord, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the village is best seen by hiking along one of the many walking paths that take you deep into the tranquil countryside. Whilst there you can visit some mountain farms and sample some of their fine organic meats or dairy products or you could pop in to try a beer from the Aegir Brewery, a unique village brewery that has become world famous.

The village of Skjolden is located at the head of Norway’s longest and deepest fjord – Sognefjorden – and at the foot of Norway’s highest mountains and largest glacier.

Skjolden is approached via the picturesque Lusterfjord, turned emerald green by the melting water from the nearby glaciers. Along both shores of the fjord there are many beautiful hamlets and lush landscapes where fruits and berries are grown on small idyllic farms that have remained unchanged for centuries. One such small-holding is Høgdegarden Skåri, an old mountainside farm that dates back to the 14th century and is still very much a working establishment.

Nearby to Skjolden is the famous Urnes Stave church, built in approximately 1130. Similar churches existed elsewhere in Europe, but only the Norwegian ones have survived. Don't miss the opportunity to visit this ancient part of Norwegian cultural history and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sognefjellsvegen, Route 55 across the Sognefjell mountain area between Luster and Lom, is the highest and most impressive mountain pass in Northern Europe with its highest point being 1430 meters above sea level. With breathtaking views across the region, what better spot to stop for some summer skiing?

The combination of fjords, mountains and glaciers offers you a unique experience, and makes Skjolden a paradise for anyone exploring the breathtaking nature of Fjord Norway.

Kalvåg is a small fishing community located at the southern entrance to the Nordfjorden on the island of Frøya with the North Sea as its neighbour in the west and Stadt to the north.

Probably the best kept fishing village in western Norway, Kalvåg is a vibrant collection of old waterfront buildings which have been restored and converted to provide unique accommodation. Clustered around the bay the sea houses are full of atmosphere.

The Vamråk Salting House Museum in the village formerly housed a copper smiths, a carpenter’s shop, salt herring and cod liver oil production and was also a base for local fishermen. Today the original tools and equipment lie about, creating an impression that workers from the early post-war years have just taken a five minute break before returning to their labours.

Kalvåg is famous for its excellent seafood and there is no better place to enjoy it than the beautiful setting of the Knutholmen Restaurant next to the sea. Knutholmen’s excellent chefs prepare wonderful seafood dishes in the atmospheric restaurant or on an excursion to a spectacular location in the region.

There is is much to do in the region with many attractions nearby such as Grotlesanden beach, the highest sea cliff in Europe Hornelen, rock carvings at Vingen, and the old trading stations of Rugsund and Smørhamn. Or simply visit the local galleries and immerse yourself in the art and crafts of Kalvåg.

Superyacht Norway was established in March 2014 following extensive research into the international Superyacht market and comprises shareholders that represent popular tourist destinations in the Fjord Norway region along with companies with links to the Superyacht industry, including a shipping agent and a water-born activity specialist.

We all share the common goal of developing superyacht tourism in an around the fjords of Western Norway and have substantially invested in intensive marketing and significant infrastructure construction projects specifically geared towards facilitating superyachts.

Other organisations, companies and individuals that are not shareholders sponsor Superyacht Norway instead, working on a cost-only basis to enable the initiative to gain a foothold as a serious destination for the world's finest superyachts. All of this enables us to offer our initial services free of charge to owners, captains and charterers that are interested in visiting Norway with their yachts. PRELIMINARY PROPOSALS FOR ITINERARY AND ACTIVITIESAfter initial contact, we send interested owners, captains or companies a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document which outlines basic information about cruising Fjord Norway. Upon receiving the necessary information about the yacht, its guests and their cruising requirements, we prepare, an preliminary proposal for an itinerary that we hope covers everything that a guest could hope to experience, including off-yacht activities.

We always recommend that visiting Superyachts engage with our reliable shipping agent before their cruise in the region. As part of their normal services, our agent is well informed about the local rules & regulations and is continuously being kept updated on potential changes. The agent can comply with the extensive Norwegian reporting regime, with a minimum input from the yacht captain. This will ensuring a smooth cruise during your stay. Our shipping agent also has special agreements in place so that clients can minimize taxes for NOx pollutions. FENDER PROTECTORSIn Norway it is usual for black tyres to be used to protect quays and berths. In order to avoid the marking the fenders of visiting Superyachts, our destinations stock bespoke fender covers that can be deployed along the quayside prior to arrival. We like to think that small details such as this go a long way in making our guests and their magnificent vessels welcome in the region.

FJORD NORWAY AND BERGEN – IDEAL FOR SHAKEDOWN CRUISESShakedown cruises to non-EU countries offer economic advantages to superyacht owners. For yards in Northern Europe, this makes Norway an ideal destination. With Bergen being the capital of Fjord Norway and the superior centre for maritime services in the country, it is the perfect starting point for a shakedown cruise. After a new build yacht has been delivered by the shipyard, the captain and crew can set about preparing the vessel and undergo sea trials whilst sailing across to the port of Bergen. Meanwhile the owners and their guests can fly directly to Bergen Airport, meet their brand new yacht and enjoy a spectacular cruise in the breathtaking fjords. During our first active season in 2015, we were honoured to receive three new buildings that were put through their paces against a backdrop of ranging mountains and deep blue waters. NORWAY – AN ADVENTUROUS ALTERNATIVE TO THE MED AND THE CARIBBEANIn recent years more sporty and adventurous cruising has come to the fore and, as a result, the interest in Norway as a suitable destination for superyachts has seen an increase.

Not only does Fjord Norway offer a unique cruising experience with its beautiful topography, landscapes

and wonders of nature, it can also offer many otheradvantages to visiting yachts, owners, guests and crew.

These include:• much lower harbour fees than the Med & the Caribbean.• excellent rate of exchange with the Norwegian Krone

(NOK) being considerably lower in the last two years.• as Norway is a non-EU country, visiting Superyachts can fill

their tanks with tax fee fuel in the last port before departure.• Norway is considered a safe and secure country.

SHIPPING AGENTS (SEE PAGES 30)Superyacht Norway is represented by the highly respected shipping agent Alex. Birger Grieg A/S of Bergen.

FJORDGUIDING DA – THE ACTIVITIES COMPANYFjordGuiding has in-depth knowledge and experience of tourism throughout the whole Fjord-Norway region from Stavanger to Ålesund.

As a shareholder in Superyacht Norway, FjordGuiding takes responsibility for preparing proposals for cruising itineraries and activities. Subsequently FjordGuiding can then provide support as a specialist advisor on an agreed commercial basis.

FjordGuiding can assist 24/7 regarding your itinerary, organizing activities and giving advice on other questions that occurs. FjordGuiding can support by phone or email, and if wanted be at presence on the different locations. Their sole aim is to ensure that everything runs as planned and be able to help if you wish to make any changes.

They will also work hand-in-hand with the recommended agents, once the agent has taken care of all their regular tasks such as paperwork, booking of berths and supplies etc. FjordGuiding can provide the services of different chase boats. These are perfect for fast trips into the many ‘fingers’ of the fjords or for taking care of activities like deep-sea fishing.

HULL AND MACHINERY YACHT INSURANCE

Throughout our 178 year history, Norwegian Hull Club has set its mark in the history of being one of the largest pure marine insurers in the world.

Our long experience from traditionally Marine and Cruise Insurance has been transferred into our Yacht Venture and enables us to meet and even outperform expectations of Yacht clients world wide.

Some define Marine Insurance merely as financial capacity or security. We define it as trust, first hand knowledge and partnership. Neither we as insurers nor a yacht owner have the ability to eliminate the perils which create the need for insurance. Therefore our insurance product includes:

24/7 Emergency Response team who are supporting and training clients in emergency situations on a daily basis to save lives, environment and assets.

24/7 Operational Intelligence team who by utilizing technology and support from satellites, weather services, aircrafts, ships, social media and salvage options enables the clients to be on top of the information flow.

A specialized legal team who is available as part of the contingency team and for any general advice.

Technical specialists with extensive experience varying from small proximate cause analysis to major specifications during tender.

Salvage specialists who has experience in salvage negotiations, that can save you both time and money and be a valuable peace of mind in a stressful situation.

You have high expectations to the technical features of your Mega Yacht; to its sleek and elegant exterior and its performance on the water. We think it’s only fair that you have the same expectations to your insurers.
