Artist Spotlight By Sara P. Shirley

Vinodini Jayaraman received

her first set of paints when she

was 3 years old. Jayaraman

suffered from a stutter and her

mother thought the problem

stemmed from a trouble with expression.

by age 12, Jayaraman’s stutter was

gone. Her romance with paint, however,

had only just begun.

Jayaraman, a memphis resident,

grew up in Kerala, India. Her mother was

a lawyer and mathematician. Her father

was a conservationist, and Jayaraman

spent her youth traveling to tiger and

elephant reservations, she said.

valedictorian of her college class,

Jayaraman went on to receive a master’s

degree in International Studies from

Jawaharlal nehru University in 1980.

She traveled the breadth of India in her

first job with the Indian civil Service.

“I once lived in the foothills of the

Himalayas,” said Jayaraman. “I didn’t

realize it then, but to be able to travel was

such a privilege.”

In the 1990s, Jayaraman immigrated

with her husband and two children to the

United States. After settling in memphis,

she worked as the director of refugee

and immigration services at catholic

charities of West Tennessee.

Jayaraman continued to paint

throughout her career and has now

dedicated herself to the craft full time.

Her preferred medium is silk, but she

works with different paints on a variety

of surfaces.

This fall, she began painting a

mural at the University of memphis,

near the school’s community garden.

Jayaraman’s 20-year-old son, who

is an economics major, works in the

garden.

The mural depicts several

endangered animals that Jayaraman

encountered in her childhood.

of her favorite, tigers, she painted

twelve. She also featured the extinct

Tasmanian tiger and other endangered

animals, such as komodo dragons and

rhinoceros.

Karyl buddington, director of

animal care facilities at the University

of memphis, said the mural will serve as

a teaching tool to highlight diminishing

numbers of animals as humans

encroach on territories. Jayaraman said

she hopes that, in addition to raising

awareness, the mural will bring joy to

students and visitors.

“Seeing the tigers at the University

always makes me happy,” she said.

naturally, tigers and elephants have

prominence in the work hanging on the

walls of Jayaraman’s memphis home.

She draws inspiration from Indian

mythology and her life on the malabar

coast. Her work is a blend of South

Asian ethnic art and modern art.

“I now live by the mississippi, but

the sights and sounds of India continue

to haunt me,” Jayaraman wrote in the

artist statement on her website. “I am

ever conscious of the paradox that

is Asia, its poverty and opulence, its

irresistible urge for modernization and

its equally determined resolve to retain

tradition.”

Jayaraman’s work is available for

purchase at her website: http://www.

silkepics.com.

“I like to say that my art is a pictorial

diary,” Jayaraman said. “It’s been a good

journey.”

Twenty years after artist nancy cheairs

graduated with a bachelor’s degree in

fine arts from memphis college of

Art, she decided to go back to school.

The impact on her work after the

return to academia was “profound,” she said.

“That was a real turning point in my life,” said

cheairs. “The conversations between student

and teacher, and student to student added

depth and new questions to my practice.”

cheairs received her master’s degree in

2007 from the University of memphis and

longed to incorporate her experiences at

school into her everyday life. So, with her

sculptor husband, she opened up her art studio

on Flicker Street in memphis for classes in

2010.

“What we’re doing is a little unusual for

this area, and needed,” said cheairs. “We’re

committed to offering high-quality community

art education to students.”

cheairs and her staff teach classes to

students of all levels and ages.

Inspired by a class she taught on color,

cheairs used only primary colors to create the

collection of oil paintings titled “Arcadia.”

The collection will be will be on exhibit nov.

20-dec. 21 at david Lusk Gallery.

The concept of Arcadia is of an “untouched

and unspoiled land, a place that restores both

body and spirit,” said cheairs. “my goal with

these paintings is to construct a new world

from fragments of remembered experience,

including pieces from childhood, art history,

literature and architecture.”

1Use mementos from your travels to decorate for the holidays. Take all those shells you collected on the beach and place them in a

glass jar mixed with silver and gold ornaments or display a collection of photos from your travels in coordinating frames.

2Use all the christmas cards you receive to decorate your home. display them attractively on a wire card holder or attach them to a

ribbon hung from the wall.

3Use natural elements from your region of the country to decorate everything from your mantle to your front doors. in the south, we

often see cotton, magnolia leaves, pine cones and spruce displayed prominently.

4Place a small favor that also serves as a place card at each table setting for guests to enjoy. They will be thrilled to be taking home a

personalized gift.

5To make any holiday gathering festive, use candy to decorate and serve as dessert for your guests. Fill clear glass containers with a

variety of candies that match your color scheme and provide guests with small containers to sample the sweets.

6instead of hanging the same old wreath on your front door, purchase boxwood letters and add a festive ribbon.

7For a festive look, concentrate on setting a beautiful table by first layering different fabrics. choose colors that match the theme

of your party and consider mixing different prints and textures.

8consider using fruit as part of your décor. red and green apples, cranberries and oranges last quite a while, are inexpensive

and really add a festive touch to a mantle or centerpiece.

9Use stemware and sentimental family pieces to set up charming vignettes throughout your home. mint julep cups and antique crystal

are perfect containers that are easy to display.

Inspired table settingon the cover

Memories are made around the dining room table each holiday season, and we wanted to share ideas to help make your festive meals

more memorable. Stacy mcSpadden and Linda Perry, with chestnut Hall Fine Furniture and Interior design, mixed antique china with modern tableware to create the stunning setting displayed on this issue’s cover.

The idea behind the setting was to use inherited pieces with newer ones to give your table a personal and unique, yet timeless look. The table is dressed with a champagne tablecloth and tea green

table runner. mcSpadden placed newer Lennox holiday series dinner plates over silver and gold chargers, and then put antique salad plates on top.

“mixing the pieces makes the setting more interesting,” said mcSpadden. “And family members will recognize the older china—maybe your mother or your grandmother’s things—and it just makes it more personal.”

Antique crystal water glasses were paired with sleeker, more modern crystal tea glasses, adding extra pop to each place setting. At the table’s center, a floral arrangement composed by Perry draws the eye. White and gold

ornaments inside the arrangement add a decidedly holiday feel to the flowers. on each side of the arrangement sit boxwood topiaries, which mcSpadden said can be used to dress up a table on any occasion.

In front of the topiary, three crystal candlesticks catch light and add elegance to the spread.

At each end, large ornaments enclosed in bell cloches seal the table’s christmas theme.

Lastly, in place of napkin rings, mcSpadden tied the napkins with a ribbon and ornament, which could be given as party favors to guests.

When bartlett home owner Warren Zimmer relocated to Arizona in 2005 for work, he rented out his home. Upon his return in 2010, he

said the house had suffered a bit of wear and tear from renters and was in need of renovation. Zimmer turned to marble and Granite Products, of cordova, to remodel his kitchen. Warren’s formica countertops had bowed, he said, and he wanted a cabinet design that would maximize storage. He also updated his appliances to have a complete set of stainless steel products.

In three weeks, Warren’s kitchen was transformed. His cabinets were replaced with a glaze-finished cherry wood set. The custom design included a pantry built into the back side of the bar, to give Warren much-needed storage space. Warren chose beige, speckled granite countertops and a textured, glass tile backsplash. one of Warren’s favorite features, he said, is his faucet, which has a pull-out sprayer handle.

Sammy James, the general manager at marble and Granite Products, said the tiled glass backsplash is a unique kitchen feature gaining popularity with consumers.

Also in the business of bathroom renovation, James said one of the hottest trends currently is the Salita stone shower. marble and Granite Products imports the stone for the showers from Italy. because the stone is installed without grout, cleaning and upkeep become much easier than with grouted tile, said James.

Another popular option, said James, is the cultured marble tile that marble and Granite Products makes on site. The store offers a $3,995 bathroom renovation package that includes the cultured marble shower tile, bath tub, tile floor, toilet, sink with granite countertop and cherry wood cabinetry, said James.

James uses the showroom at marble and Granite Products to show off the latest kitchen and bathroom trends. Although marble and Granite Products has been in business in memphis for nearly 40 years, it only recently opened its showroom to the public. “As a child, I didn't know why we couldn't have colored lights,” she said. “but a wreath with a red bow, that has always stuck with me.”

Last christmas, combest easily held on to her winning title in the city’s holiday lighting contest in the “traditional wreath” category.

The trick, she said, is all in the red ribbon. combest uses hand-crafted bows to top her wreaths, tree and mantelpiece. In fact, she makes them for most holidays and special occasions.

“I probably make 200 bows a year,” combest guessed. “People have come to expect my bows when they get a gift.”

In late october, wreaths on combest’s doors were dressed in black, purple and leopard print bows in honor of Halloween. Inside, ribbons were tied to the staircase, and boxes of christmas ribbon had been retrieved from the attic.

combest reached inside her christmas box and offered to show us how she makes her bows. It’s easier than you might think and only takes about 15 minutes.

First, combest suggests buying ribbon with wire. She buys hers on the internet, but also suggests going to Hobby Lobby, where you can purchase 90 feet of ribbon for $19.99 (or less, if there’s a sale). combest suggests pulling back the bolt over the ribbon to have a better look at how much you’re really getting.

next, you’ll need pipe cleaners, which are also available online or at a crafts store. Finally, pull a pair of scissors out of your junk drawer, and you’re ready to go.

Step 2grab a sparkly pipe cleaner, cross it over the center of your bow, and twist it together at the bottom.

Step 3grab another color of ribbon and repeat. When

you’ve made your second bow, attach it to the first with the pipe cleaners. repeat with as many different

kinds of ribbon as you please.

Step 4Fluff! combest said using ribbon that already has a

now that you’re an expert, combest suggests mixing your colors with a print. her favorite is leopard, but any pattern gives the bow a special touch. combest said her bows, when placed outside for the holidays, last about three years before they begin to fade or fray.

Low countryconcept from builder Dave Moore

a walk through “the Monteleone”

Sometimes when a builder

sees a particular lot, he just

knows he has to build on it.

That was the case with

dave moore, builder of “The

monteleone” in the 2013 veSTA Home

Show at St. James Place in Germantown.

As moore was building “La montagne”

in the 2012 veSTA show, which was

honored as the People’s choice home,

he set his sights on an adjoining lot.

moore made arrangements to be

able to build on Lot 10 before plans fell

into place to also host the 2013 veSTA

Home Show at St. James Place.

early on, moore decided that his

home for the 2013 show would be

“something different” and reflect the low-

country style he admires, one that’s often

found in homes along the southern coast.

Prior to choosing a plan for this

year’s show, moore made trips to baton

rouge and new orleans, La. to look at

a variety of homes and buildings in order

to identify design elements he wanted to

include in his 2013 veSTA home.

enamored with the style of new

orleans buildings, moore chose to name

his 2013 veSTA home after the Hotel

monteleone, a historic hotel near the

French Quarter.

moore found a fellow enthusiast of

low-country style in plan designer ed

yendrek of classic Home designs.

The monteleone is a two-story

custom 5,869 square-foot home, sitting

on a one-acre lot that moore used for two

large outdoor living areas in the front of

the home, an element not often seen in

memphis.

“There are some beautiful old trees

on the lot,” moore said, “so I decided to

keep them, and incorporate them as

part of an entertaining courtyard in the

front.” moore chose to set the home a bit

further back than the other homes in the

development. He used the courtyards,

with low brick walls and new orleans-

style ornamental iron to create a grand

entrance into the home.

even with a southern exposure, the

stately old oak trees add graceful style

to the lot, and keep the front courtyards

shaded and comfortable for outdoor

entertaining. not just a design feature, the

courtyards in front serve as a welcoming

place to greet guests, or to listen to the

soothing sounds of a fountain placed

near the home’s main entrance. because

there is a gentle rise from street level

to the home’s front elevation, moore

explained, there is also a comfortable

sense of privacy to the front courtyard.

once inside, brick archways and inlaid

brick tile flooring carry through the design

elements of low-country living. exposed

beams and 10-foot cedar ceilings give

the foyer and adjoining gallery a distinct

flair, yet the wood makes the area feel

cozy and warm.

The foyer opens to the living room/

dining room, and the flow of these rooms

into the state-of-the-art gourmet kitchen

is perfect for an active family who loves

to entertain. The center island, with

its farm sink, granite countertops and

custom cabinets becomes a gathering

spot for more than cooking. To the right

of the entrance foyer, a hallway leads into

the study, designed with floor-to-ceiling

custom bookcases and barn-style sliding

doors.

From the kitchen, the sight line is

unbroken to the breakfast room and

expansive family room towards the back

of the house. beautiful French doors

open onto another outdoor living area in

the backyard, enhanced by an outdoor

fireplace, and an outdoor kitchen with

granite countertops, ceramic smoker and

stainless steel grill with rotisserie.

The downstairs rooms include a

grand master suite with en suite master

bath, separated from the “noisier” areas

of the home to offer privacy and a place

to relax in the bath’s large soaker tub. The

room’s expansive walk-in closets offer

exceptional storage space with custom

shelving. Finally, a second bedroom with

private bath on the opposite end of the

home provides a first-floor guest retreat,

or another bedroom option for family

members.

Upstairs, the design elements of low-

country style extend into a spacious third

bedroom with private bath, and another

two bedrooms that share a Jack-n-Jill

bath. continuing to offer many storage

options and open spaces, the second

floor also includes a state-of-the art

media room, often a favorite feature of

visitors to the veSTA Home Shows.

An important part of creating “that

veSTA experience,” moore said, is

working with the right people throughout

the project. From yendrek, to his various

subcontractors to Ashley Toney with

First Fruit collection, who did the interior

design, moore said everyone he worked

with “nailed it” when it came to creating a

unique home that exemplifies the relaxed,

old-world charm of low-country style.

moore said he’s excited that the

opportunity this year for christmas

decorating in The monteleone will

enhance the warm and family-friendly

atmosphere of the home. moore said

that the design of his home will appeal to

visitors “who understand our desire, from

concept to completion, was to feature a

home that truly reflects low-country, new

orleans-style design.”

With a spacious family-centric plan

and attention to details throughout the

home, moore said The monteleone offers

its future owners a “laissez les bons

temps rouler” design, one that definitely

reflects this favorite cajun phrase--“let

the good times roll!”

a different kind of tree house by moLLy FromKIn

Dave Tucker, of d&d Homes,

has been building homes

in the memphis area for

14 years. In that time, he’s

become a master of shaping

the environment to suit the eccentricities

of a particular design. recently, though,

he encountered an environment simply

not meant to be altered at the whim of

man; instead, he tells Fix, the property

ended up changing him.

It was pure chance that

brought Tucker to the Japanese maple

that features in his most challenging

and compelling building project to date.

“The normal process for building in a

development is to have a lottery type

drawing to assign the available lots to

different builders,” he says. Tucker was

not able to be present for this particular

lottery, however, and so he didn’t even

realize what a special property he had

been awarded until several weeks into

the project. “one of the requirements for

building in this particular development was

the submittal and approval of a grading

plan that required the identification and

marking of any trees that might need

to be removed,” says Tucker. Typically,

he says, an engineer works up such a

plan and the builder reviews it before

it is submitted. It was at this point in

the process that Tucker realized what

was really special about this property.

“I noticed that one of the trees that the

engineer had marked for removal was

a 10” caliper Japanese maple,” he says,

and when he saw it on the grading plan

Tucker immediately changed his plans to

accommodate the tree.

“I knew instantly that I wanted

to make the tree the focal point of the

house,” says Tucker. “I had never seen a

Japanese maple of this size.” At first, he

said, he considered transplanting the tree

in order to preserve the original house

plan; after consulting with the experts at

red’s Tree Service, it became clear that

Page 46: Fix November/December

n o v e m b e r • d e c e m b e r 2 0 1 34 6

a transplant would seriously threaten the

life of the tree. At that point, Tucker said,

the choice was clear: modify the house

plan to save the tree.

For nearly ten years, Tucker

has been working with creative Home

designs in bartlett to create his house

plans. This time, the plans were nearly

done when the discovery of the tree

led to an abrupt upheaval. Tucker

said. Fortunately, the two businesses’

longstanding partnership made it easy

to introduce modifications. Working

alongside rick ray and ernie eben of

creative Home designs, Tucker said, “I

totally changed the back of the home to

accommodate the tree. I had to move the

back porch completely, and also move

and redesign the master bedroom sitting

area. The structure was also moved

forward as far as possible within the

limits of the lot.”

even with all this disruption

and last-minute changes, Tucker said

the biggest challenge was physically

working around the tree itself. “I had

to make sure all the subcontractors

and suppliers knew to respect the tree

and to be careful around it,” he notes.

“It’s still close to the house, and the

framers, bricklayers, installers, and others

had to make sure not to damage it.”

now that construction is

complete, the house and the tree coexist

harmoniously. “The tree is visible from the

master bedroom, the great room, and the

kitchen/breakfast area,” he says. A door

from the master bedroom opens right

onto the area around the tree, which has

been landscaped into a rock garden with

ferns and grasses that complement the

tree’s Japanese origins.

“It’s a very tranquil environment,”

Tucker said.

a walk through of “the silverton”

When builder david clark of david clark

construction became part of the 2013 veSTA

Home Show at St. James Place in Germantown, he

didn’t start planning “The Silverton” from scratch.

clark used a plan for the 5,200-square-foot

home that he had put on the backburner during the recent

economic slowdown.

As the economy improved and the veSTA opportunity

presented itself, clark and architect carson Looney pulled

out the plan they’d been tweaking the last couple of years.

clark, a third-generation builder who is the father of two young

children, said he approached the task by choosing the design for a

home he would want to live in, and one that reflects how modern

families really use their space.

The Silverton is a home that works for families with young

children, as well as for families with aging relatives in the household.

Attention to detail makes the home unique and special, even

before one actually gets inside. Looney and clark chose large

cypress entrance doors and cypress columns for the front porch.

The cypress columns are slightly tapered. clark said the subtle

tapering was not an easy task, but one that made a huge difference

in the style of the front entrance.

once inside, the welcoming foyer opens into a formal dining room,

which is easily accessible from the kitchen through the butler’s pantry.

The heart of clark’s home is the open-concept common area with

its central kitchen. “When you stand at the ‘command center’— the

apron front sink — you can see all of that open family gathering

space,” clark said. This includes the family room, with its massive

stone fireplace and built-in cabinetry, the breakfast room, and the

adjacent screened-in outdoor room, which clark said he thinks will

be used quite often because of its proximity to the kitchen.

With state-of-the-art design, the kitchen features granite

countertops, Thermidor appliances, an easy-on-the-back raised

dishwasher, and both a butler’s pantry and walk-in storage pantry.

“I can easily see a party, with people in the kitchen and family

room, kids playing out in the yard, and the guys gathered in the

outdoor room watching football or around the grill.” clark said.

“That’s the way my family entertains.”

The downstairs floor plan includes a second bedroom with

private bath, an office off the side “friend’s entry” and the private

master bedroom. In addition to the spacious storage in his-and-her

closets, one has a unique “early morning entry,” a touch Looney

included in the design that is perfect for

professionals who may be on-call or work

different hours than a spouse. The entry

allows someone to enter or leave the

master suite without having to go through

the bedroom and disturb a sleeper.

All of the doors into the master

bedroom and bath were built to aging-

in-place standards, with wider frames for

wheelchair accessibility, said clark. The

shower also was built for easy access,

and includes what clark said may be

“Shelby county’s first approved linear

drain.” The drainage lines are built into

the floor at the rear of the shower, not in

the center, which is more common.

The home was also built to mLGW’s

eco-build standards, clark said, which

makes it extremely energy efficient.

The Silverton was clark’s first total eco-

build home, and he commended mLGW

employees and his subcontractors

and suppliers for making the process

seamless.

“you can tell that this level of energy

efficiency is understood and important

to everyone in the building process,

including homebuyers,” clark said.

because today’s families are more tech-

savvy than in previous generations, the

Silverton includes home automation with

whole-house remote integration.

Family-friendly features aren’t limited

to the inside of The Silverton, clark said.

The home includes a two-bay garage,

each bay with extra-wide doors and

rooms that are deeper than standard

garages, to accommodate family SUv’s

and lots of storage. In addition, there is

the convenience of a pull through single-

bay garage, which has its own water

supply and central vacuum system to

create a wash bay for equipment such as

ATv’ s, boats and riding mowers.

A stairway off the side

entrance leads to the upstairs.

At the top is a short hallway with even

more storage, leading to the media/b

onus room, but the standout feature

is another room totally designed with

family in mind — the bunkroom. With

built-in bunks and stairs leading up to

the beds, this room (next to a media

room) is ideal for sleepovers. “I can

just see a whole bunch of cousins

piling up in that bunk room,” clark said.

rounding out the second story is a child’s

study and two additional bedrooms with

walk-in closets and access to private

baths.

clark said builders tend to build

homes they could see their own families

living in. both he and his wife, Laura, (who

happens to also be his realtor) said they

loved the floor plan of the Silverton, and

how well-suited it is for an active family.

“From the time we turned over that first

shovel of dirt, I’ve had to keep reminding

Laura ‘we are not moving into this house.’”

For Jon ruch, building his second house for the veSTA Home Show at St. James Place in Germantown meant not just building a home, but building it

better.He used this philosophy when

choosing the design for his 2013 home, which is actually a modification of the home he built just down the street for the 2012 veSTA show.

“but you’d never know it,” ruch said. “We took what we really liked in that home, and just modified the plan to make it even better.”

ruch said the design of his home, “bianco,” is all about “family, energy efficiency and sustainability,” guiding principles in all of the homes he builds.

The spacious floor plan is designed

for large families and those who like to entertain. The foyer easily flows into the great room beyond, and to the formal dining room on the left. The dining room has unobstructed flow into the family room, which opens into the breakfast room, and from there, into the heart of the home--the kitchen.

Furnished with state-of the-art appliances, the kitchen features a massive curved island that allows a home chef to easily see into all of the surrounding family spaces. The back wall is exposed, an interesting element that makes the white cabinetry and granite countertops all the more impressive. Added to the entertainment value is the outdoor living area just off the great room, with a built-in fire pit, and a covered patio that looks over an expansive back yard, perfect for

a future swimming pool or other outdoor feature.

To the right of the foyer is a short hallway to the guest suite, with a private bath and large closet that is well suited for an older child, aging parent, or use as a private office. off the great room is another short hallway leading to the master bedroom suite, where attention to detail makes the space not just functional, but also elegant. The bedroom opens onto an outdoor patio space, a convenient escape for morning coffee. That master bath has an attention-getting crystal light fixture over the soaking tub, placed strategically in front of a zero entry walk-through shower. Instead of linen closets, ruch included free-standing linen presses, each with decorative wood details and mirror finishes that add to

the luxurious feel of the suite. ruch

said an important element in the bath

is the “separate but shared” closet, with

dedicated “his-and-her” spaces.

one of the most interesting features

in the home is immediately noticeable at

the entrance and carries through to the

upstairs: an intricate iron stair railing. The

custom ironwork not only gives the home

a unique design element, but one that

provides continuity to the design that’s

also seen in a custom wine rack inset in

a dining room wall, and in the corbels on

the kitchen island.

Upstairs, the home has three more

bedrooms, one with a private bath, and

two sharing a Jack-n-Jill bath. each room

has spacious walk-in closets, providing

extra storage functionality. At the top of

the stairs is a wide hallway, with a step-up

to an open sitting area perfect for a teen

hangout or group study area. The media

room is designed with entertaining in

mind, with a countertop eating area and

wet bar that is conveniently located so

as to not impede the view of the screen.

Adjacent to the media room, through

French doors, is a bonus area that could

be used as extra office space, a workout

room or craft room.

A special feature of all ruch homes

is attic space that offers even more

storage. It’s an important element in

the functionality and efficiency of the

home, and is evident in the TechShield

radiant barrier on the roof and insulation

along the ductwork. built to eco-build

standards, the home is heated and cooled

with geothermal technology, offering the

future homeowners great energy savings,

and the home is lit with Leds.

It all adds up to what ruch describes

as “a better way to build.”

When planning the interior design for builder dave moore’s new orleans-style veSTA home (see pg. 42), Ashley Tony of

First Fruit collection in collierville drew

inspiration from the “woodland, rustic

feel of the house,” she said.

Tony decorated the home for the

holidays and included three christmas

trees in the design. The largest tree,

located in the large family room at

the rear of the home, was pre-lit and

adorned with large brown, copper and

gold ball ornaments.

Warm brown tones were chosen to

complement the vaulted cedar ceilings

and beams. The tree is topped with a

large burlap bow, and different colors

of ribbon stream down the branches.

Tony used gold-stamped burlap ribbon,

brown mesh ribbon and a gold and

brown leopard print ribbon to outfit the

tree. For added dimension, Tony used

large sticks with mossy pinecones as

accents. Glass ornaments cast light on

the ribbon, and a few ornamental birds

grace the branches.

A woodland-themed centerpiece

on the coffee table in front of the tree

features a fawn, surrounded by pine

branches and other greenery. The fawn

rests on a hollowed out piece of birch

bark.

glory, check it out personally during the

I looked at the difference in cost to

frame, seal, and insulate the exterior

walls with 2x6 over 2x4 and the

payback period for this investment

as measured by the reduced

energy consumption, i.e., power bill.

I relied upon my licensed engineer

and HvAc contractor to generate the

heating/cooling load between a 2x4

and 2x6 wall.

In this house, which was 3,600

heated square feet, the cooling load

went from 3.76 to 3.94 tons. Since we

were using a four-ton geothermal unit

there was no savings gained by the 2x6

wall to be had in reducing the HvAc

sizing.

next we compared the cost

difference to insulate. I use blown

cellulose insulation and the difference

in the cost was $1,260 more for the

extra insulation to fill the 2x6 wall.

next was the framing package. We

changed the plates and studs to build

the exterior to 2x6, which increased the

lumber package by about $1,340.

The final step was to take the energy

savings per year that the client would

get with the 2x6 wall over the 2x4 wall

and divide the total cost increase to get

our payback period.

based on the energy load difference

and projected energy reduction to

maintain the indoor climate, we came

up with about $50 per year in savings.

needless to say, we did not frame with

2x6 walls. The investment just didn’t

make sense.
