MannersPresident Coolidge invited
some Vermont Friends to dine at theWhite House. They were worriedabout their table manners anddecided to do everything PresidentCoolidge did.
The meal passed smoothly untilcoffee was served. Coolidge pouredhis coffee into a saucer. The guestsdid likewise. Then, Coolidge leaned
over . . . and gave it to his cat!!

Table Rules
Diners should wait to be seated untildirected to do so by their host or by their
waiter if in a restaurant.Ladies should follow the waiter first withmen following.
It is proper for a gentleman to seat thelady on his right and, if applicable, the ladyon his left. (Many times the head waiter ina restaurant will assume this role.

Never order an expensive entreunless you are encouraged to do so by
your host.Likewise, ordering the cheapest itemon the menu is not recommended
either.Consider any dining difficulties aparticular food might present.

Knife Know-how
Want to look sharp? Hone your diningtechniques by learning the correct method
for cutting meat.American style requires the diner to place theknife in the right hand and fork in the lefthand. Hold the knife loosely in the palm of
your hand with the three outside fingersgently cradling it. Extend and place your indexfinger along the top edge of the blade toprovide stability and strength. The thumbshould wrap below the knife and slightly
encircle the three outside fingers.

When cutting meat, proper etiquetteprotocol requires the diner to cut one
small bite at a time.American style: Place knife on upperright edge of dinner plate with the bladefacing inward and move the dinner fork
to the right hand. Eat the piece ofmeat. Repeat this process for eachindividual bite.

If you see a small forkon the far left of yourplate,
fish (likely shrimpcocktail) will be thefirst course.
If you see a spoon on

How will this workshop affectyou in the future?
A quick examination of current resources onetiquette reveals a re-emergence of societysfocus on etiquette.
Statements from employers interviewing aprospective employee over lunch or dinnerconfirms the importance of proper etiquette. Anemployee who is very capable of fulfilling a
position, but who has no polish may beoverlooked when an offer is made although hemay have superior qualifications.The ability to present oneself well to society isand always will be very important!!
