Prelude O Come, O Come Emmanuel 15th Century Plainsong/ arr. Martin Welcome

Introit (from hymn 77)

Isaiah the prophet has written of old how God’s new creation shall come. Instead of the thorn tree, the fir tree shall grow; the wolf shall lie down with the lamb. The mountains and hills shall burst forth into song, the peoples be led forth in peace, for the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of God as the waters cover the sea.

Yet nations prey on the meek of the world, and conflict turns parent from child. Your people despoil all the sweetness of earth; the briar and the thorn tree grow wild. God, bring to fruition your will for the earth, that no one shall hurt or destroy, that wisdom and justice shall reign in the land and your people shall go forth in joy.

*Call to Worship and Lighting of the Advent Candles (from Isaiah 11) The prophet writes: In the days to come, a shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse. The spirit of wisdom and understanding shall rest upon this One. The wolf shall live with the lamb, the cow and the bear shall graze together. And a little child shall lead them. Today we light the candles of hope and peace as signs of the coming light of Christ. God’s peaceful realm is on its way! Let us worship God.

*Hymn 82 Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus

*Invitation to Confession

*Prayer of Confession (silent confession) Holy God, you show us the path of righteousness. Yet, we confess that we do not always walk in your light. We are quick to build barriers, rather than work to tear them down. We find it easier to exclude others than to welcome them. Forgive us, we pray. Rekindle in us the vision of your peaceful realm, so that we may be ever more ready to receive the coming Prince of Peace, in whose name we pray. Amen.

Anthem Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming arr. Hopson

Lo, how a rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung! Of Jesse’s lineage coming as men of old have sung. It came a floweret bright, Amid the cold of winter, when half-spent was the night.

Isaiah ‘twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind. With Mary we behold it, the Virgin Mother kind. To show God’s love aright, she bore to us a Savior, when half-spent was the night.

This flower, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air. Dispels with glorious splendor the darkness everywhere. True man, yet very God, from sin and death now saves us, and lightens every load.

Scripture Reading Isaiah 11:1-10

Sermon The Power of Peace Sharon Youngs

Hymn 79 Light Dawns on a Weary World

*Affirmation of Faith

We believe that God is at work in our world turning hopeless and evil situations into good. We believe in the power of peace; that goodness and justice and love will triumph in the end, and that tyranny and oppression will not last forever. One day all tears will be wiped away and the lamb will lie down with the lion. True peace and true reconciliation are not only desirable, they are assured and guaranteed. This is our faith, and our hope. Amen.

Call to Prayer (hymn 92)

While we are waiting, come; while we are waiting, come. Jesus, our Lord, Emmanuel, while we are waiting, come.

Worship notes

On this second Sunday of Advent, the word is Shalom. This is a Hebrew word that means peace, harmony, wholeness, prosperity, and tranquility. Shalom is often said when parting company as a kind of farewell. Look for this word, written in Hebrew, on the banner for today.
