A Rabbit-Tale By

Pastor Mark Haas

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ!

Grumble, grumble, grrr! I had my annual meeting with my tax preparer yesterday! Dog-gone! Just

when it looked like I could do a little spending I find out that not only do I owe the State of Cali-

fornia more than usual, but also the Feds want more than I had anticipated! I guess I should have

known that there was a reason my checking account was a tad higher than a year ago…now it will

be smaller in a few weeks than last year when the taxes were all said and done! Grumble, grrr, and

dog-gone!

Speaking of dog-gone…you may have missed it a few Sundays ago when I had an update on our

former pet dog, Webster the Pug! You may recall we got Webster as a “replacement” for Charlie

the Chihuahua who had died in September 2008. We drove to Auburn on October 31, 2008 to get

Webster who was to be an object of affection for Dee who was dearly missing Charlie, who had

been with us for over 13 years! Webster had his good points, as well as bad. For his good-side, I

do have to admit that as we decorated for Christmas that fall, and for as long as I left up the tree

and decorations that winter, he never was a problem! But his “devil-dog” side was predominant. I

was never keen on the idea of getting another dog with the rainy months coming, but Dee pre-

vailed. Almost immediately, Dee wasn’t sure about Webster either, as she commented a few times

negatively about Webbie to Bell Choir members and others. He was a real problem not wanting to

use his doggie door, be outside in the rain, snow or sunshine, or keep his paws off the back of our

living room French doors, which he gouged terribly. We, and then I, were terrible as obedience

trainers! As time passed, he used the house as his “outside” and began chewing on all things

wooden, of which we had a lot! Then, because Melanie and I needed to actually leave the house

for hours on end, Webster needed to be in his kennel a lot, and though he reluctantly occupied one

upstairs and downstairs, when he got out there was no catching him or stopping his rampage of

destruction. So, in May 2010, Webster was adopted out via Pug Rescue to a lady who lives in Se-

attle, Washington. Ironically, the dog who hated rain moved to a rain forest! He had a big brother

there, Archie the Pug, and they got along for a while. But then Webster began to behave there as

he did with me. His new owner put up with him for some time, but then due to family needs, she

needed to adopt him out to another home who is trying to give him attention and love. Webster is

4 ½ years old and in his fourth home, counting his birth-home. Poor guy! And as you may recall,

my propensity to procrastinate on some things has me still referencing damages to the home and

needs for repair and painting as Webster memories! Someday things will get done! Right!?

I can hardly wait for April 1! Not for “April Fool’s Day,” but for the Opening Day of the baseball

season for the Giants! My expectations are high for them! Two World Series appearances and

championships in three years with a relatively young team and pitching staff…could there be a

third World Series appearance in 2013 as well! Will Timmy regain his “game” or Barry repeat his

remarkable comeback of last year? Can Buster consistently be as great as last year, and what

about the “Brandons” and supporting cast that include a perfect game pitcher in Matt and a strong

lefty in Madison? And then on Opening Day in AT&T Park, April 8, what will they do as a team

to replicate the displaying of their World Series Championship Pennant in 2010? A “Fear-the

Beard” Sergio Romo run like Brian Wilson’s into the center field stands? It will be exciting!

Page 3: First News April 2013

3

I’m hoping for April showers, too! In reading last year’s April “Rabbit-Tale,” I was reminded

that for two years in a row now, we’ve had fairly wet late falls and then pretty dry winters and

early springs, though last year we received a lot of mid-spring rain. And the rain translates to

snow in the higher elevations which has an okay base…the weekend I’m writing this there is a

ski snow event at Squaw Valley…but it is nowhere like it was a couple of years back when we

had record breaking amounts and you could ski until Memorial Day at some locations! The

Midwest and East have finally caught up to their average snowfalls…it looks pretty late for us

to do the same, but rain would surely be nice!

In reading a recent column by former LCMS President Jerry Kieschnick, he noted that while he

was President he had been invited to an event of world Christian leaders where one of the topics

of discussion would have been the recalculating of the date for Easter to always occur on the

first Sunday of April. Unfortunately, that discussion never occurred as Pope John-Paul II died.

Pope Benedict, now retired, never brought up the question. I wonder what Pope Francis may

say on the subject as he prepares for his first Easter as the Roman Catholic leader, on the last

day of March? It seems he is off to a nice start with humility and concern for the poor as well as

firm beliefs in the Christian faith.

Well, this month there has been a potpourri of thoughts to share with you: taxes, pets, baseball,

the weather, and a new church leader. Above it all, though, there is one final thought for you to

read! And that is regarding the center point of our faith: the resurrection of Jesus Christ from

the dead! As St. Paul puts it in his letter to the Corinthians: “If Christ has not been raised, your

faith is futile and you are still in your sins…if in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of

all people most to be pitied … But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead!” Everything in

life comes back to these few words…in fact Christ has been raised from the dead! We are mem-

bers of the body of Christ, the church, individually depending on the whole for our existence

under the Cross which brings us forgiveness, life and salvation, shared among us in Baptism,

Word and the Sacrament of Holy Communion. And this is ours by grace and mercy. This last

week, my confessor reminded me of a great hymn (LSB 915): “Today Your Mercy Calls Us.” I

encourage you to find it and read it to yourself to be reminded of your pardon of sin, blood

washing from sin and future grace promised! And this is ours because of one ultimate event: the

resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead! Regardless of when it falls on the calendar, it is

“the” day of all days! Enjoy it now because it is also ours forever!

Yours in Christ’s service,

Pastor Mark Haas, SDG

Note to the Ushers:

Please be sure to count and log attendance and communion in the notebook provided in the cabinet. It is vital for our records.

Communion cards are collected and put in the office after the service.

Please be sure to empty offering trays and return them to the altar. Put contents into a zipper bag located in the counters cup-

board and put bag into safe after each service.

If you are ushering at the 9:00 service, you need to start the coffee. Please DO NOT dog open the doors. There is no need for

that anymore. The doors will remain open when you unlock them and the panic bars work without being dogged.

If you are ushering at the 10:30 service, you need to clean up the coffee cart and put it away, remove all white sheets from the

attendance pads and put them in the office. Check ALL doors in the church and Sunday school area to be sure they are locked

and the lights are all off.

CONTINUING/COMING IN APRIL 2013…

We conduct our worship services at 9 AM (Contemporary) and 10:30 AM (Traditional). Adult Bible Classes on Sunday are offered at 8 AM and 9:15 AM. Sunday School for nursery/preschool age children through age 12 is conducted during the contemporary service, beginning with the Lamb’s Sermon, after which they go to their classes with their teachers!

TEAM LEADER POSITIONS

We continue to seek out persons to serve as leaders of our Christian Education, Stew-ardship and Youth teams. If we are missing you in the conversation, and you’d like to be a part of these necessary ministry teams, please contact pastor at your earliest con-venience.

REVITALIZATION

We continue to receive donations to the “Revitalization Fund” established to raise monies to offset the expenses of calling a DCE/Family Life Minister-Intern, to us this summer 2013. A ministry description and application was submitted to Concordia University Chicago! An on-site visit by the Director of the DCE Program was held on March 6, 2013! By Easter we hope to know if we will receive an Intern, and if so, s/he will be identified on April 7!

You may recall that our stewardship program 2011 involved these items…Financial Growth by Three Means: (1) Commitment to tithing, (2) Increased contribution in 2013, and (3) Specific pledge to the Revitalization fund.

COOKS FOR THE HOMELESS

Ida Brady has a friend, Dee Hook, who helps prepare lunches for distribution to the homeless camps around town, as identified by Mike Parr with Mercy Rescue Way Mission. If you would like to assist in the meal preparation, contact Ida or contact Dee directly at 916-941-9541 or via email … [email protected]. See her schedule listed elsewhere in the First News!

MUSICIANS/SINGERS

“By His Grace,” our contemporary service worship leaders are seeking out more instrumentalists and singers to accent their ministry. They would dearly love to have an every-Sunday keyboardist…thanks Denise for your current efforts! In the meantime, Bill and Jenny on guitar, sometimes Dick on guitar or harmonica, and occasionally Doug on bass are the core along with Clydene, Jenny and Bill as vocalists! Know someone, maybe you, who could join along? Let Bill Rosenberry or pastor know! Betsy Moore will be with us on two Sundays in May!

BOARD OF TRUSTEES UPDATE APRIL 2013 In an attempt to keep the congregation informed of activities conducted by the Board of Trustees, the governing group elected to conduct the day-to-day business of the congregation as adopted by the Voters Assembly, the Board has placed quarterly updates in the “First News.” This update covers the months of January – March 2013.

The vision statement of the congregation has been reestablished as “First for Others” following the acronym: OTHERS, referring to Outreach to the commu-nity, Teaching God’s Word, Harvest focused, Evangelize by specific need, Relevant worship and prayer, and Strengthened by God’s Sacraments. The vision statement developed in the fall of 2009 has been broken down into 10 “outcome goals” which are numbered but not necessarily prioritized as objec-tives to achieve the vision statement. Copies of these goals are on the web-site, www.first4others.org, and can also be obtained from the church office.

Stephen Minister continuing education and peer supervision is in full swing. Classes are scheduled into mid-December. We continue to look for referrals from you for folks who may be assisted by a Stephen Minister. In the next few months, we anticipate community speakers from Marshall Hospital and the Senior Center to help not only identify services but also potential care-receivers in the community as an outreach dynamic of Stephen Ministry!

The Bell Tower project had been approved by the City of Placerville. The Property Team secured bids from contractors. Expenses, as identified in bids, listed the project as nearly double the resources contributed to the project! We have purchased and installed a carillon system, located over the church of-fices. The recommendation to the May Voters Assembly meeting will be to abandon the Bell Tower project and redirect the Memorial Funds for this pro-ject to other options. Fortunately, we will have the periodic music of the “bells!”

The Revitalization Fund, which currently accumulates donations to offset ex-penses for a proposed DCE Intern beginning in the early summer of 2013, has reached $30,568 as of the end of February. Continued donations are encour-aged.

Our Sunday school has grown to three classes, 18 children, with eight women of the congregation who lead the classes. The Youth Room has been repainted and is being used for a classroom for the older children. We continue to discuss the potential of re-opening the preschool. In 2013 we will set up a task force to investigate the opportunity and need and viability to re-open.

Page 10: First News April 2013

10

Our budget review of income and expenses to date shows us to be healthy; however, in order to fully consider re-opening the preschool and adding a DCE Intern, we will need to maintain and expand our resources. We hope that you have been visiting our website for information, updates, sermons, newsletters and calendar changes. A lot of time and energy have been utilized to keep it modern and useful! The Board has taken on four aspects of the “Outcome Goals” and will be adding pro-ject management principles to further address our Vision Statement. Opportunities in financial management, parenting, marriage enrichment, men’s Bible study and retreat, and establishment of an “Endowment Fund” are under review. There will be a recom-mendation to the May Voters Assembly meeting to adopt a formal “Endowment Fund.” Copies of the “Fund” as proposed will be posted on the church’s website and paper copies made available in the Narthex prior to the meeting. We have four youth who will be attending the LCMS National Youth Gathering in San Antonio, Texas, June 30-July 5. They will be attending with other congregations: Light of the Hills and St. Matthews, both of whom have larger groups attending. We will scholarship our youth and anticipate their fund-raising within First Lutheran: Adopt-A-Mile and tamale sales!

At the October Board meeting, Carole Smith, representing the Nomadic Winter Shel-ter, asked for our congregation’s assistance via a variety of options: cash for clothing, sleeping bags, donations of cash for gasoline, personnel to man the shelter, support staffing at the Mercy Way Rescue that had begun, and/or provide space for shelter, once a week during the winter months. This was also presented to the December 2012 Voters Assembly. Your input is valuable. Please contact pastor or Board President, Larry Hermone, to voice your thoughts pro or con. We will revisit this opportunity at the May Voters Assembly meeting.

We have been approached by the Gold Country Assisted Living unit to consider of-fering one or two worship settings per month at either 11 AM or 2 PM, lay or pastor led! If you have any interest or view points, please contact pastor.

The May Voters Assembly meeting will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2013 at noon! Please plan ahead and make arrangements to attend. We will be electing two new Board members and receive reports and updates as noted above! We made application for a DCE Intern via Concordia University-Chicago. An on-site visit was conducted by their director of the DCE program, Dr. Debbie Arfsten, on March 6. We anticipate any day hearing whether or not we will receive an Intern. If so, we will learn the Intern’s identity on April 7, 2013.

SACRAMENTO VALLEY CHAPTER LUTHERANS FOR LIFE (LFL)--UPDATE By Lois Brauer, President

As the Chapter President, I want to share information to help you with life issues and to encourage your participation and support in our LFL ministry.

As we look around us, we see people of all ages--from the newborn to those who are dealing with terminal illness or perhaps facing death. We were created in God’s image, in our mothers’ wombs with unique characteristics and per-sonalities. As we go through life, we face many challenges—some routine and seemingly simple things but then there are others that are not so easy to face and handle. IE; perhaps we have a disability or a family member is disabled or handicapped, know someone who is f acing an unplanned pregnancy and doesn’t know what to do, a loved one is facing death and there are all kinds of decisions to make, a parent or friend has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Dis-ease or dementia, what legal decisions need to be set in place prior to facing serious medical decisions. Where do we turn for help in these situations? As a matter of fact, where do we start to tackle these concerns? What is God’s will? How can we be sure we’re making the right decisions? LFL has some great informational brochures for you.

Over the past 10 years, our LFL Chapter has been diligently working with the national office, speakers, and various agencies (many Christian oriented) to bring information to our congregations and communities about life issues via free seminars and events. We assisted various agencies with funding and support for their special work. Plus free booklets, brochures, and information available to assist you with life issues. Just give us a call and we’ll do our best to get you the information you are seeking.

At our February Chapter Meeting, we made plans for the following events for this year:

February 13 - March 24, 2013 - 40 Days for Life

February 13 - March 22, 2013 - Baby Bottle Project

May 12, 2013 - Mother’s Day Rose Sale

May 18, 2013 - Walk/Run for Life www.ministrysync.com/event/website/home/?e=3430

June 29, 2013 - LFL Caregiving Seminar (watch for more information)

September 27, 2013 - Gala for Life

October 6, 2013 - Life Chain

November 9, 2013 - Salute to Life Dinner & Auction

I encourage you to put these dates on your calendar and support us in these vital projects. We have Chapter meet-ings 3 – 4 times a year. We especially would like to have many of you join us in the 5k Run/Walk for Life to be held on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Maidu Park in Roseville. This is a delightful, family fun-filled event. Go to www.lfl-sac.org/ for further info and/or to find out how to be part of our team; or contact me at 916-543-8533 or via

Thank you to everyone that

came in after the service to

help with the kits. The Sunday

school children had them al-

most done! They did an awe-

some job!

We sent 102 complete kits plus we

had soap and toothbrushes left for the

Upper Room!

Thank you so much for your generous

support!

Fireside room will be

closed for the week

starting April 2th for

renovations. If you

have a meeting or

event planned for that week it will be

held downstairs.

The quilters sent

28 quilts to

There is a catalog on the donut table if you are interested. It is full of

beautiful handmade items from all over the world. There are baskets,

bowls, jewelry, kitchen ware, chocolate….. We aren’t doing it as a fund-

raiser so take 10% off the catalog price is you would like to order some-

thing. There is an order blank with the catalog.
