The Power of the Webs, Tweets and Facebook

Please use the power of our mediaYou have hopefully noticed that we continually talk about our Twitter and Facebook page as well as our web sites. Its for a good reason, we get a lot of traffic from the general public looking for things to do on the weekend (or at other times).

Did you know that promoting your activities and changes through our social media and web sites is open to all members and gets results.

Websiteswww.recreationsa.org gets hits in almost every aspect of recreation.

www.getoutandstayout.org.au gets high traffic for searches on Mountain Biking, Canoeing, 4WD, etc. “outdoor activities” and “outdoor education”.

www.watcharoundwater.com.au gets good hit levels for swimming safety search-es and similar.

All 3 sites link to our Facebook and Twitter accounts that cover a range of friends and followers that span the recreation and allied industries in South Australia and beyond.

So next time you have something you want to tell the world about, email it to [email protected] and let us help you get the word out.

Do you have a blog? Why would a company or organisation have a blog?

Consider a “normal” website. What is it? it is a brochure with links to other brochures. It may then have video’s attached, but it is still basically a brochure. A blog gets per-sonal. Even though the blogs of large companies are very well thought out and man-aged promotional tools, they are designed to be “friendly” and “personal”.

For a group like West Lakes Canoe Club, a blog allows the blogger to give a personal account of a paddling experience and the reader the opportunity to “get personal” and ask the questions that will get them involved in the activity.

Blogs are often used by small businesses to show a link between the values of the employees (personal comments on the blog) and the aims of the organisation.

If you have a blog and want to maximise its power, use our power; blog then get Get Out and Stay Out to tweet and link to it and let the alerts come.

Becoming powerful together

Being linked is powerful

Consider this; Joe and Jane Public are sitting in front of their computer on Friday night. They decide to “google” something to do. “lets try mountain biking” says Joe. Being concerned that they don’t have the right skills they type in “mountain biking skills”. The first site in SA to come up is Escapegoat.

Why? because Escapegoat’s website is “optimised” and “linked”

Linking; Escapegoat are linked (amongst other points) to getoutandstayout.org.au un-der mountain bike skills. As a result “robots” (automatic programs that read your sites details) record them in search engines for queries of “mountain bike skills”.

Optimised; every point in a page of their website repeats and enhances the terms “mountain bike skills”.

So what can Recreation SA do for you?

- we can help you to optimise your site- we can link to your site under your preferred search terms

What can you do for Recreation SA and thus for the whole SA recreation industry; link to us.

We are in the process of generating web support and increasing our search engine optimisation. In doing this your company/organisation will in turn be promoted at a higher level as we link to you through various means.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could add the following link/s to your website, this will also demonstrate to your viewers/customers your relationship with Recre-ational activities in South Australia and your promotion and support of growth within the industry.

Recreation South Australia http://www.recreationsa.org/Get Out and Stay Out http://www.getoutandstayout.org.au/Watch Around Water http://www.watcharoundwater.com.au/

We appreciate your support in raising awareness of the recreational activities, news, events and water safety within South Australia.

The Get Out and Stay Out website has just been upgraded to better caters to both beginners who seek out basic information as well as people already involved in the activities. Example, a budding canoeist may be planning a trip and they can simply head to the GOSO canoeing page which will then link off to many weather forecasts. The same principal applies to surfing, etc.

By having your organisation on GOSO you will be involved from the grass roots up, this is perfect business development.

Mothers Day Classic

Make it a classic Mothers Day!

Join in the Mothers Day Classic walk/run on May 8, 2011

Make a difference in 2011 and contribute to breast cancer research by putting on your running shoes and joining in the Mothers Day Classic 4.5k or 7.5k walk/run.

The Mother’s Day Classic is a national walk/run that raises money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation research. It is a community event that attracts breast can-cer survivors, family walkers, serious runners, school and corporate teams and is held in all capital cities plus regional locations across Australia.

Beginning in 1998, the Mother’s Day Classic is now Australia’s largest national charity event and last year 8,000 people in Adelaide took to the pavement.

When: Sunday, 8 May 2011 (Mother’s Day)

Where: Elder Park, King William Street, Adelaide

Organised by Women In Super, a group that provides networking opportunities for all women in the superannuation industry nationally, and managed by ‘Life. Be in it’ SA.

Participants will meet at Elder Park, start at the King William Road bridge and the course will follow the scenic Linear Park Route next to the Torrens River.

We are keen to attract as many people as possible to this family oriented event. Walking, running or strolling the 4.5km or 7.5km course is a great way to support or remember loved ones who have been through the breast cancer journey.

Thousands of women, men and children of all ages wear tribute cards to support those fighting breast cancer, and to remember those lost to the disease. A minute of silence is held on the day to remember those who have died from the disease.

It is not all exercise!…the fun will continue at the end of the course with entertain-ment, ‘Life. Be in it.’ games, face painting, a jumping castle, food stalls and free mas-sage.

For more information or to register online, visit www.mothersdayclassic.com.au or contact ‘Life. Be in it.’ on 8362 2150

Royal Life Saving Society

Royal Life Saving Society - Australia works to prevent drowning and facilitate healthy, ac-tive lifestyles by equipping all Australians with water safety skills. There is no one rea-son Australians drown, so there is no one simple solution. For that reason, our approach needs to reflect the complexity of the range of issues that result in drowning deaths.

This month’s cover came about as a result of phone calls and emails. After the 2010 out-door conference I received a number of calls and emails;

“why weren’t we told Sandy was in SA speaking”

“why weren’t we told about the conference”

More recently;

“how come I didn’t know about the first aid courses”

Our aim at Recreation SA is to support your members, their members and employees and to provide opportunity for increased recreation for ALL. We need your help to spread the infor-mation around so that more people can join us all in enjoying SA. Please pass this newslet-ter on and feedback back - Thank you

Regards

Ian Dewey, Executive Officer
