A Message from Rabbi Krauss

Dear Parents:

A central question that comes up as wedelve into sefer shemot is the balancebetween Hashgacha and Bechira. Onone hand, Hashem is omniscient, and"has a plan"; on the other hand, Hecreated human beings with a TzelemElok im, and with the power to choose, which is fundamental to the concept ofMitzvot (after all, I can't be commanded

to do or not to do something if I don't have the free will to choose).

Condolences

To Steve Fox on the passing of hisbeloved father, Joseph Fox.

These ideas seem to clash, something that is particularly strikingvis a vis Pharaoh- as the enslavement was "promised" to Avrahammany years earlier, was part of God's plan, and it could be said thatPharaoh was carrying out the divine will. If that was the case, whyshould he be held responsible? This question is discussed bymany, particularly the Ramban and the Rambam who have differentapproaches to it. I encourage you to discuss this tension over yourShabbat tables, and discuss ramifications for the way we conductourselves, and view our lives, as well as our role in the world.

First Grade Siddur Play

“We have waited six whole years for our first siddur!", sang the enthusiastic first graders at this years'siddur play. The first graders marched into the gym under a talit which has all of their names embroideredon it, and proudly took their places on stage surrounded by their excited parents, extended family, teachersand administrators. Those unable to attend could see and hear the play streaming live. The children sangsongs, performed hand motions and clapped along to the music. Each class took a turn reciting poems andnarratives in English and in Hebrew.

Rabbi Krauss wished the children of k ita alef a mazal tov and made a "shehecheyanu". He told them thatwith Purim coming up he was reminded of when Mordechai had to daven for the Jewish people, he had all ofthe children come out and daven too because Hashem listens to the tefilot of children. RabbiKrauss encouraged the children to use their new siddurim every day and to remember the excitement thatthey feel today when they daven.

In art the students created their own siddur covers. They first designed their ideas on paper and thentransferred it onto the leather where they used permanent and paint markers. Their original art work wasthen sewn onto the book cover. Each first grader received their siddur and each posed for a photo withMorah Sarah or Rabbi Krauss to have as a keepsake of this wonderful event.

Many thanks to all of the first grade morot for teaching the children so beautifully in preparation for thisspecial day. A special thank you to the Bellino, Garbuz, Raskas and Sokol families for sponsoring thesiddur play.

Rainy Day "Adventure"

Even our very youngest children in the daycare have a wide range of rainy day activities. On Tuesday thechildren and their teachers went on an “adventure” through the big building. Looking out at the rain at theschool’s entrance, the children sang a rousing version of “If all the raindrops were lemon drops and gumdrops…”.They definitely brought some sunshine to those passing by!

Sixth Grade Shabbaton

By: Miriam Liberman 6Y

Last Shabbat we had the 6th grade Shabbaton at SAR. Many of the kids from Riverdale hosted the kids whodid not live near school. On Friday night, everyone came to SAR to daven mincha-maariv and to eat dinner. After that, we had an icebreaker – a game following instructions- and then broke up into groups and didskits. After that we gathered into walking groups and went back to our hosts' homes. It was a fun evening.

The following morning we davened shacharit, had a delicious lunch and went on a crazy scavenger hunt tofind the pieces of a puzzle. Everyone was running around looking for clues. When we found all of thepieces, the puzzle read: "במקום שאין בו אנשים השתדל להיות איש" — it means “In a place where there aren’tany men, try to be a man.” After that we had menucha, a whole hour of rest which we spent playing games, talking and napping. We then went to daven mincha followed by seuda shlishit. We headed into the multipurpose room to sing songs and it was very special. We sang for such a long time that when we finished itwasn’t even Shabbat anymore so we davened maariv for weekdays! Finally, we had a beautiful havdallah. We were all singing along and no one wanted to go home. We were sad to leave our wonderful shabbaton.Thank you to the faculty, students and hosts for such an amazing shabbaton.

"Siddur Sparks"

Parents of our first graders came together last Motzei Shabbat at the home of Moshe and Abbie Greenbergto participate in “Siddur Sparks” with Morah Sarah Richter. It was a timely event as their first graders hadbeen preparing to receive their first siddurim this week.

The evening was a combination of socializing and learning. Morah Sarah spoke with the parents about howthey could make tefilah more meaningful for their children, and inspire them to enjoy tefilah. She suggestedthat raising children gives parents a fresh perspective on almost everything. This includes tefilah. Sharingbeautiful sources and anecdotes, Morah Sarah involved the parents in a discussion about “attaching oneselfto Hashem” –explaining that the root of the Hebrew word tefila is tofel- to attach. She asked questions forthe parents to think about – What is your favorite tefilah and why? How can we bring Hashem’s presenceinto the lives of our children? How can we convey to our children that tefilah is one of our family values?Morah Sarah suggested some great tips to help the children get started in davening such as; using thesame siddur that they use at school, helping the children find a comfortable location for davening at home, praising them for their tefilah, and discussing what they are grateful for.

The event was inspiring and interesting--engaging the parents in a unique discussion of tefilah and thedevelopment of their own children.

Ice Ice Baby

Outside it finally feels like winter and the children of N2 have been learning all about ice. In class they didhands-on experiments with ice cubes and even played a fun game of “pass the ice round and round”. Thechildren and their morot laughed and laughed as they passed around an ice cube and by the end of thegame the only thing left were their cold, wet hands!

The children also went “ice skating”! The teachers put the skates on each child---did you know that puttingwax paper on the bottom of shoes make amazing ice skates? The children had a blast as they glided andtwirled on the “rink” (multi purpose room). Click here to see the children in action.

The ice activities were so satisfying for the children as they got to experience “ice” with all of their senses. They ended their week happily slurping and licking their school made frozen bananas.

Grade 5 trip to the 92 St. Y

On Wednesday January 18, 2012, the SAR 5th grade students took a trip to awonderful program at the 92nd St. Y on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Theprogram was called Remember Me, Music, Art and Poetry Celebrating theChildren of Terezín. With a brief preparation from Mrs. Rosner and a quickupdate at the Y before the show, students were treated to the art and poetry of 4children from the 1940’s Jewish ghetto of Terezín, a concentration camp in what

is now the Czech Republic. One young boy played four different characters who were in Terezin. A screenat the back of the stage showed the art and poetry of the different boys, including Petr Grinz who perishedat Auschwitz. A film was recently made about this boy and his artwork and poetry. Interspersed betweenstories about the different boys was music written by Czech composers including one who was in Terezin.Terezin was known for housing many adult musicians, composers, and other artists. The composer whowas in the camp was Pavel Haas, and all other music heard was by the Czech composer Janacek. Thewind sextet featured talented musicians from the New York Metropolitan music scene, including LarisaGelman who was one of the organizers of the Meet the Musician program at the Y. Ms. Gelman was thefeatured bassoon player. Other instruments included oboe, flute and piccolo, clarinet and piccolo clarinet, bass clarinet, and not in the woodwind family but an essential part of the wind sextet was the french horn. Each musician had a chance to share their knowledge and expertise on their instrument alone and playingwith the group. At the end students were treated to a sing along with the song “We Shall Overcome,”appropriate for overcoming the hardships of the holocaust and just in time to celebrate the birthday of Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr. Students were given a journal and will be asked to follow up this trip with reflectionson the stories of the boys in Terezin as well as reflections on the music and musicians.

This Week in Sports

The Girl's varsity had a couple of strong performances against Yeshiva Har Torah and Park East DaySchool. The lady Sting were led by the defensive pressure of Talia Askowitz, Bracha Rosenberg andJessica Hecht, the rebounding of Bracha Eisenstadt, Sophie Hecht and Rebecca Hyman and the shootingof Dahlia Fisher, Adina Noble and Noa Friedman.

The 7th grade boy's basketball team had a well rounded game against Yeshiva Derech Hatorah. ZachReich, Dovie Marcus, Amichai Feit and Adam Duitz paced the Sting offensively and Yair Slasky and YoniSaks led the defensive effort.

The SAR boy’s hockey team was defeated by Yeshivat Noam this week by a score of 4-2. After fallingbehind 4-0 in the first period, the team played very well in the 2nd and 3rd to make it close against theundefeated first place Noam team, with goals by Sam Soff and Azriel Lavi.

The 6th grade boy’s basketball team is now 5-0! They defeated both MDS and North Shore this week. SARlimited North Shore to 8 points in the first half of the game and SAR went on to win it, 44-29.

It's That "Kind" of Week

January 17, 2012

Dear Rabbi Krauss,

If you had been at MDS last night, your students and coach at SAR would have made you proud. They

have a very strong team and beat us by a lot. But that's not why you would have been proud. They went

up by 25 and without having to be reminded of the rules, removed their starting five and made sure it was

not a blow out. But that is not what would have made you proud. Last night, we put in a boy from our

school that has special needs, but loves to play basketball. We put him in the game knowing that he

would have difficulty on the court, but hoping that he would enjoy it. His teammates had to tell him where

to go. They kept trying to feed him the ball. He shot, the ball came close, but no luck. After many tries,

he was passed the ball by a team mate. Once again, he tried to shoot. The ref blew the whistle telling us

that he would get two foul shots. This young man went to the line and shot. His first shot missed. He got

the ball back and took his final shot. As it went through the basket we jumped up out of our seats (not

caring that he violated) and cheered. When I turned towards SAR, I saw something spectacular. The

whole SAR team (and its fans) were cheering for this boy! They joined in the cheering and helped in

chanting his name! After the game, your coach came over to this young man and shook his hand. He told

the boy’s mother what a great game he had. Your students behaved in a way that should make Yeshiva

Basketball proud. I wanted to share this story with you, so you could share in the pride of your SAR

students.

Thank you!

דבר תורה

Parshat Vaera - By Joseph Block 6Z

In this week’s Parsha, פרשת וארא, the torah says in פרק ז, פסוק יט:

"ויאמר ה' אל-משה, אמר ו אל-kהרן קח מטך

ועל-kגמיהם ועל כל-מקוה מימיהם--ויהיו-דם

ונטה-ידך על-מימי מצרים על-נהרתם על-יאריהם"

Why does Hashem tell Moshe to tell Aharon to do the מכה? Why doesn't Hashem just tell Moshe to do it?Then again for מכת צפרדע the torah says :

”ויאמר ה', אל-משה, אמר אל-kהרן

נטה את-ידך במטך, על-הנהרת על-היארים ועל-האגמים

והעל את-הצפרדעים, על-ארץ מצרים"

Why does Hashem keep on telling Aharon to do it? Again for מכת כינים Hashem says,

"ויאמר ה' , אל-משה, אמר אל-kהרן

נטה את-מטך והך את-עפר ה~רץ; והיה לכנם, בכל-ארץ מצרים"

This is the question that Rashi asks on these pesukim. Rashi says that when Moshe was a baby, and hismom put him in a basket to go down the Nile, the river saved him. This is why Hashem didn't want Mosheto do a plague against something that once protected him. For the frogs and the lice, Hashem didn't wantMoshe to hit the ground because when Moshe killed the Egyptian slave driver, the ground helped himbecause the ground helped hide the dead man. This proves that if someone does a favor for you, you shouldnot return and doing something bad to them. We need to remember to be grateful and appreciative to thepeople and things that help us in our lives.

Shabbat Shalom.

Mishnah Study Program in Memory of Matt Fenster z"l

Matt was committed to an inclusive vision of Jewish learning and worked to promote Jewish textualliteracy. As an adult, he worked hard to acquire the skills necessary to study Mishnah and otherJewish texts independently and in Chavruta (with a study partner). To honor his memory, the SARAcademy, Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale, and Young Israel Ohab Zedekcommunities will join together to complete the study of the entire Mishnah in time for Matt's first Yahrzeit onAugust 6, 2012 (18th of Av).

Consistent with Matt's inclusive vision, we encourage widespread participation from learners at all levels. Please sign up on the linked google-doc -- on your own or with a group of others -- to take responsibility forlearning a tractate of Mishnah in time for the Yahrzeit. If you need help with your learning, please indicateon the spreadsheet, and we'll connect you with someone who can help.

Along the way to the Yahrzeit, there will be classes and other learning programs connected to thisproject. The focus of the communal learning programs will be the tractate of Brakhot. So, if you haveno prior experience studying Mishnah, you should still feel welcome to sign up to study Brakhot, as there

will be opportunities to study this tractate at community-wide programs.

Thank you for your commitment to this project. We look forward to strengthening the bonds of ourcommunity through this learning project dedicated to Matt's memory. If you have any questions, please feelfree to email Eric Fisher at [email protected]
