Fireflies

April 2-6, 2018

Making sculptures with toothpicks and grapesAt one of our small group times this week, the Fireflies were challenged to build structures using toothpicks and grapes. Willie takes the end of a toothpick and places into a grape. He then repeated the process until he had made several different sections. Willie then used his emerging logistical reasoning skills to connect the sections he had made to form different shapes and structures. Using his imagination and creativity, first Willie made simple rectangles and cubes but then figured out how to create more complex constructs like pyramids, and towers. Once Willie and the other Fireflies had finished creating their grape and toothpick creations, they enjoyed eating them at snack time later in the day!

Making a foot graph This week the Fireflies were in for a barefoot surprise during one of their indoor experiences! After using their self-help kills to take off their socks and shoes, the children then dipped their bare feet in wet, colorful paint and with Ms. Claudia’s help made a print of their feet. Once all of the Fireflies had a chance to make a print of their feet, they used magnifying glasses to take a closer look at the designs that were left behind from their toes and heels! Later, the Fireflies worked to put the footprints in order from smallest to largest, which was a great way for them to use their emerging math skills.

Fieldtrip to the College Park Aviation Museum One of the concepts the Fireflies have explored through their study of roads is how roads allow for different modes of transportation like cars, motorcycles and even bikes. This led to many conversations over the past few weeks about other ways people can travel that do not involve roads, such as on boats and airplanes! To encourage the Fireflies to learn more about other methods of transportation, this week the Fireflies took a fieldtrip to the College Park Aviation museum. During our visit, the children enjoyed listening to our tour guide talk to us about the different parts of an airplane like the rudder, wings and propeller all of which we got to touch and explore further!
