Welcome back . . .We’re thrilled to be back for the fourthedition of Shrewsbury Food Festival. And there’s one thing we can say withabsolute certainty: this year’s event isgoing to be bigger and better than ever.In fact, we’ll push the boat out andgo one step further; this year’s event isgoing to be the biggest and best foodfestival that Shropshire has ever seen. We’ve got more chefs, more bands, more cookery classes, more free stufffor kids and – crucially – an evenbigger site in which to fit them all in.Last year we welcomed 26,000 ofyou to TheQuarry for our annualcelebration of artisan food, drink andcraft and so this year we’ve taken thedecision to increase the size of ourshowground. We’ll be operating bothin the large field that runs from the topof TheQuarry to the river, but we’ll
also have plenty of events in the lowerfield, beneath The Dingle, that linesthe riverside. There’ll be extra roomfor all of you to relax, enjoy picnics, sample hot food, chill out to bands orlet your kids go wild on the exciting newattractions that we have in store. You’ll have noticed our cover shotwith the beautiful Becky Porter, fromOptimum Joy, and the brilliantAndrew Birch, theWelsh-born headchef at Fishmore Hall. Andrew is partof aWelsh invasion that will featurerenowned cooks here in Shrewsbury. He’ll be joined by TV star StephenTerry, from Saturday Kitchen andGreatBritish Menu. Stephen learned underMarco PierreWhite, was best mateswith Gordon Ramsay – and also hisbest man – before winningMichelinstars then opening The Hardwick, in
Abergavenny. We’ll also be welcomingtheMichelin-starred BryanWebb, from Tyddyn Llan, in NorthWales, and the exceptional Indian chef AnandGeorge, from Purple Poppadom, toourWenlock Spring Chef Stage. There’s plenty more in store, includingan expanded FBCManby BowdlerCookery School, curated by Chris Burt, from The Peach Tree. It will featuremore classes than ever before and willraise cash for charity. So, biggest andbest yet?We reckon so.We’ve bookedthe sun – all we need is for you andyour friends and family to join us.

Fresh ideas to help ourfestival grow and developInnovation is our middle name.Actually, it’s not. We don’t have amiddle name. We’re TeamOrange– so if we did have amiddle name itwould probably be something like Pip.But enough with the jokes. We’re allabout coming up with new ideas andpackingmore andmore fun into yourfavourite food festival.Earlier this year we won a rural Oscarfrom the Countryside Alliance forstaging the best food festival in theWest Midlands. And with that accoladecomes additional pressure. We arekeen to stay on our toes, to keepmoving forward and to keep giving youmore fun and excitement. So this year, we’ve come up with anumber of new concepts. The firstthing that you’ll notice is our new-and-improved layout. We’ve taken over a
huge field at the bottom of TheQuarry, along the riverbank, so that you’ve gotmore space in which to relax and havefun. The enhanced site designmeanswe can also fit in extra vendors, morestuff for kids and extra space for hotfood.Beer and cake seem to be two of yourfavourite things. So we’ve created aleand cake trails around Shrewsbury. They’ll take place during festivalweekend and you’ll be able to trybefore you buy. The idea is simple:We want to spread the benefit that ourfestival brings to the small independentswho are here all year round. And wealso want you to have a great timetasting and testing. Our support for speciality diets isreflected in the creation of a new veganfestival – and even if you’re a convicted

carnivore, we’d encourage you totuck in.Vegan diets are great as part of abalanced lifestyle, whether you gothe whole lentil or not.As well as coming up with newideas, we’re constantly refiningexisting concepts and we’re reallyproud of what we’re doingwith FBCManby Bowdler and Chef/Curator Chris Burt in our all-newCookery School. There are more classes than everbefore and we’re really uppingthe ante for a great weekend ofinteractive demos and lessons.Book now, before they go.So we weren’t joking when we saidour middle name is Innovation. And if you have ideas for activitiesfor 2017 just drop us a line.

All hail Team Orange
Okay, so here’s the thing. If one ofthe festival’s founders fell under a bus– and, hey, before we go down thatroad, let’s hope they don’t – we’d stillmanage. And if one of our guest chefs couldn’tmake it, one of our bands droppedout at the last minute or one of ourproducers found themselves locked outof their kitchen and unable to makeenough to turn up, well, that wouldbe fine. But if it weren’t for our volunteers, there’d be no festival. Themostimportant part of our weekend of food, drink and good vibes is the team ofmen and women who dress up inorange T-shirts and bring bonhomie toTheQuarry. We need around 120 people to makeour festival run smoothly – and theygive their time freely for the good ofthe town. They enable us to buildschool gardens and to give back to thecommunity.TeamOrange are the people who
make our festival what it is. Theircheerful, smiling faces greet peoplewhen they arrive, they show peoplewhere things are, they hand outprogrammes, distribute water whenit’s really hot and are the public faceof our event. Last year, we welcomed100 volunteers to the site, whose effortswere invaluable. And this year we’relooking to attract a similar number. So if you’re reading this and think youmight be able to play a part – howeversmall – call us, email us, Tweet us orcontact us via Facebook today, please.TeamOrange is what makes our eventtick.Volunteer Louise Jones says:“Volunteering is great fun. Theorganisers look after us brilliantly, plyingus with food and drink throughout theweekend. It’s a very social activity, wemeet plenty of others from across thetown and it’s our way of making surethe festival succeeds. I havemadelifetime friends and wouldn’t miss it.“A big event like Shrewsbury Food

VOLUNTEERS
Festival brings more than £1million tothe town with extra revenues floodinginto shops and stalls. That keepspeople in jobs. So the least we cando as volunteers is spare a couple ofhours on the last weekend in June tomake sure it keeps going.”So if you’re able to spare a few hoursover the weekend of 25 and 26 June –or a few hours on the days beforeand after – please, please, pleasecontact us now. We’d be delightedto hear from you. Email [email protected] or give usa buzz on 01952 432175.Festival health and security consultantJonathan Smith says volunteers arethe event’s lifeblood.Without them, there wouldn’t be a festival. Whenyou look at the way the event hasgrown, you have to take your hat off toTeamOrange. They’ve really driven itforward andmade it what it is today. So what are you waiting for?Give us acall now and become a welcome partof TeamOrange.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES
We’re all about creatinggood times for everyone
OurChief Executive changed herbusiness cards earlier this year. Shewas bored of the formality of beingcalled ‘Boss’ and wanted somethingthat more accurately reflected her role.So now, if you bump into Beth Heathand she presses a card into your palm,it will say this: DirectorOf Fun.At the risk of sounding like a 1980sCyndi Lauper lyric, we just wanna havefun. That’s our bottom line, our USP,our raison d’être.Yes, we’re serious about promotingsmall producers and bringing theirproducts to a wider audience. Andyes, we’re serious about helping thelocal food economy to grow and

about promoting the best restaurantsin our area. But if you strip all of thataway, there’s something that goes rightto the heart of what we do and it’s this– creating good times.Shrewsbury is our home. Like somanyof you, we live and work in the town. It’s where we’re from and every once ina while we want to let our hair down, hang out, get happy and do things thatmake us smile. So the litmus test for us isn’t: ‘Doesthis producer live within 87 yards ofTheQuarry?’ or ‘Were these loavesmade from a sourdough culture that’scelebrating its 17th birthday?’ No, weleave that to people who want to get
serious. Our bottom line is this: ‘Yeah, but is that going to be fun?’Beth says: “Shrewsbury is sucha beautiful, vibrant town and it’simportant that our festival reflects that.“People get serious during the weekwhen they have a 9-5 job to holddown.“So when it comes to the weekend theywant a good time and that’s what we’reall about.“The festival is an affordable family dayout – c’mon, at £12 for a whole family,it’s a bargain.“We programme stuff for everyone. It doesn’t matter whether you’re ninemonths or 90 years old, there’s plenty
of stuff on site that you can enjoy.“We’re all about giving kids plenty offree stuff to do.We want children tohave a great time.“But we also want to create a layoutwhere people can see and enjoythe 200-plus food, drink and craftexhibitors.“We’re proud of our live music line-upand it’s also important to us to havehands-on stuff so people can havea go and enjoy learning. It’s not thesort of event where people rock upand have to be gone after an hour.“The festival gives people a whole-dayexperience – or two if they want tocome back with their friends.”

In 1996 Mercedes-Benz introduced the SLK, an automotive icon that redefined thecompact roadster. Now, 20 years on, comes the latest version: the Mercedes-Benz SLC.
Like its predecessor, the SLC combines athletic styling and performance with exceptionalcomfort. Top-down motoring is a pleasure thanks to the electro-hydraulic vario-roof,which you can open or close at the touch of a button. Optional extras, such as AIRSCARFneck level heating and the AIRGUIDE, which reduces in-cabin turbulence, provide an evenmore refined open-top experience.

WHAT’S ON SITE
We’ve expanded our siteto bring even more fun
Last year’s festival – with its new-and-improved layout – was such a hitthat we did what all sensible festivalorganisers do . . . decided to rip up thetemplate and try something new.You see, we’re all about innovation andmoving forward. We want our festivalto grow and grow. It’s doubled in sizein just three years, moving from 13,000people through the gates in 2013 to26,000 in 2015, but we’re nowherenear done. We’re keen to add another 10,000 tothat total, in time. So in case the rushcomes this year we’ve expanded oursite again. And we won’t worry if therush doesn’t come this year: We’reextremely grateful that so many peopleare already into what we’re doing. The first thing you’ll notice when you

enter the park is that we’ve been braveenough to take the space beneath theBandstand and Dingle, which is whererock concerts frequently take place. That’s given us more room for ourproducers andmore space for the kidsto run about – and alsomore roomfor you to relax and simply chill out inthe sun. There’s now a vast picnic area inwhich you can sit, eat and drink beforemeandering over to watch StephenTerry, Chris Burt or any number of othercooks.Put simply, the new layout meansthere’s more space. We’ve been pretty fortunate with theweather so far. Our festival has baskedin five days of sunshine from a possiblesix. But just in case this is the year when
the rains come, we’ve installed a largersheltered area. And, of course, if it’s really, really hot, that means you’ll be able to avoidgetting burned too. We’re constantly looking to bring newideas to our festival and so this yearwe’ve increased the activities for theyounger audience and added in abrewhouse where you can have a goat making beer. Secure your placethenmake sure you’re first in line for adeliciously liquid lunch.A vegan fringe event is showcasing thedietary needs of people who lead ameat-free lifestyle, as well as boostinglocal businesses likeO Joy, whichcaters to that group. Our Ale Trail has been at the top of ouragenda for some time. We’ve been
keen to boost trade for the region’sindependent breweries – and to getout and have a decent pint. The CakeTrail is a similar innovation that will givepeople the opportunity to enjoy sweetyumminess while getting out and aboutin Shrewsbury. Our family stage was introduced forthe first time last year and provedso popular that we’ve decided toexpand it for 2016. There’ll be moreentertainment, more activities andmoregood stuff to sing and dance to.Not that we’ve thrown the baby out withthe bathwater. We’ve also got the samebrilliant stuff that we had last year, withour Buttermarket Music Stage, loads offast cars fromMercedes-Benz, plenty ofexhibitor stands andmuch, muchmore.Enjoy it – we plan to.

ariarSupporting the local food community is what we’re all about. And restaurants play such a big part in that. They supportproducers themselves by procuring the best locally-madefood and drink. And they provide a point of interest amongboth locals and visitors; setting increasingly high standards.Since we started our event in 2013, there has been a waveof interest in Shrewsbury restaurants. New venues haveopened, standards have been lifted higher and higher, newchefs have brought exciting dishes to the table and customershave delighted in their work.We showcase 10 local restaurants as part of our annualRestaurant Safari. The idea is simple. Throughout June,
restaurants serve a lunchtimemenu with courses startingfrom £3, £5, and £3 for a starter, main and dessert. Jason Postans, Geoff Fisher and Grant Postans enjoying a pint at last year’s festival
Pints of fun guaranteedat special taster sessionsCheers! The explosion in microbreweries in recent years has been aboon to those of us who like a decentpint. And while pubs up and down the UKfall on hard times as people drift awayand profits fall, it seems that here inShropshire they continue to thrive.Like all those connected with the foodand drink sector, they need our support. And that’s just as well – because we’rehappy to provide it.This year, we’re launching a new event, the Shrewsbury Ale Trail, which issponsored by our friends at Hobsons,in Cleobury Mortimer. They notonly make a great pint, they’re alsothoroughly nice people.Good work, beer-maker friends.Hobsons are supporting an eventthat will encourage people to visit
at least 15 pubs across town for aunique ale trail. Tickets cost £7 inadvance and are available fromwww.shrewsburyfoodfestival.co.uk, TheArmoury, or from participating pubsacross the town. There is only a limited number of1,000 available – even though we’vegot loads of pubs, we wouldn’t be ableto fit 20,000 of you into them all on thesame night. The trail starts on Friday 17th June, the week before our festival, and a
glass half-pint tankard and lanyard areincluded. It really is a bargain for aledrinkers. Once you’ve got your ticket, you’ll be able to go and have a tasterat more than 15 pubs across town –just enough to get tipsy but not drunk. And because you’ll probably needa nightcap before you call it a day,Hobsons will give you an additionalbottle of beer at the end.Tickets are available online, from theHobsons stall during festival weekend,or from The Armoury, if you’re off-site.We’re also going to present an awardto the pub or brewery that has the bestpint. So we want your votes for the sexily-named Punters’ Pint, if you will.Right, that’s enough of all of thisprogramme writing lark. We’re off tothe pub. It’s time for a liquid lunch.

Now you really can haveyour cake – and eat it!
Let them eat cake. Actually, scratch that– let us eat cake.Because cake is great. Cakemakes ussmile. Cakemakes the world go round. So let’s eat it.Shrewsbury is brimful of great bakers.Okay, not ‘brimful’, there’s not abakehouse on every street corneroffering towering buns andmouth-watering pastries. There are newindependent bakers popping up acrossShrewsbury and so we wanted to makesure you visit them and try their wares.TheMarket Hall is full of peopleselling amazing products and even theunexpected knitted cake and the bikersbar will be interesting entries for thisyear’s trail. So we’re working with our favouritepeople at The Curious, the bespoke
design agency, on the first ShrewsburyFood Festival Cake Trail. We’ve teamed up with many of thosebakehouses, shops and independentbakers to create a delicious event whichgives you the chance to go aroundtown trying bite-sized portions of cake.
You can vote for a festival favouriteafter buying tickets for just £1 outsideShrewsbury Market Hall. And because we know howmany ofyou are dog lovers, we’ll also havespecial dog biscuits available at themarket. The object is simple. Firstly, we’reall about fun. And so is this. Cakeis great, so let’s go and eat some.Secondly, one of the things that we’repassionate about is helping the small, independent producers who create ourtown’s vibrant food scene. And this willgive you the opportunity to try beforeyou buy. Hopefully you’ll like what yousample and will return time and timeagain to buy bigger portions. So what are you waiting for? Let’stuck in.

Celebrating the creativespirit of county’s artisans
The people whomake great foodand drink aren’t workers on a factoryfloor. They’re not punching the clockor serving time – they’re putting theirheart and soul into something theybelieve in. They are, for want of a betterexpression, being artistic and creative. And that’s the thing we love aboutthem. Creating great food is aboutmore thanmaking something tasty; it’salso a form of self-expression.Artisan foodmakers aren’t the onlyones in Shropshire who embody thecreative spirit. The county is also brimfulof artists, jewellers, painters, sculptors, textile workers andmanymore whocreate unique treasures. Our festival has always shonethe spotlight, not just on the foodcommunity but on the craft community
too. We’ve established a happy andfruitful partnership withMade InShropshire so that local artists get theopportunity to showcase their works toa huge audience.Events like Shrewsbury Food Festivalare hugely important to them.We offercraftspeople a discounted rate for theirstalls so that they can afford to be here. And having contact with 25,000 ormore people on the weekendmakes itone of the most important occasions ofthe year for them.Normally, crafts events andmarketsattract a relatively small audience. Our festival gives them the opportunityto sell their goods to amuch biggeraudience.Festival chair Andy Richardson says:“We love people who are brave
enough to do creative things. It doesn’tmatter if that’s somebody who wantsto make brilliant sausages from rarebreed pork or someone who is craftingjewellery from silver.”We’re all about promoting artisansand our support for Made InShropshire and local designers is reallyimportant to us.“We know that most people come tous for the food, the music, the chefdemos and the family atmosphere – weare, after all, a food festival – but we’dencourage people to wander up to thecraft area.“We’ve created a special Craft Villagethis year, so that it has its own placeand own identity. We hope you’ll maketime to check them out – they doamazing things.”

The liveliest meeting at Food FestivalHQ is the one we have at the start ofeach year when we allocate our 200exhibitor stands. It’s really important to us that we getthe balance right – by making sure wehave the best of Shropshire, the best ofthe rest of the UK, the best of artisanproducers and the best of hot foodvendors. We head to other events throughout theyear, eating our way around the burgerstands, picking out the finest cheese, feasting on curedmeats and deliciouscakes andmaking sure we don’t missout on any vendor whomight tickleyour tastebuds during the last weekend
of June. Beth Heath, Food FestivalChief Executive, said: “We are over-subscribed each year. We welcomeabout 200 exhibitors but have to turndown about 100 or more.“We try to select people fromShropshire if we’re able to, providedthey’re the best, but the key for us isquality. If we can find a really goodproducer from Scotland who doessomething brilliant and completelyunusual then we’ll welcome them.“We’re proud of supporting localproducers and they tell us each yearhowmuch being a part of our festivalhelps them.“But we are not restrictive in the way
some festivals are. We’re all aboutquality, about great food and aboutgiving our festival-goers a greatexperience when they’re with us.”Small producers also get anopportunity to mix it with the big boysby securing bursary places, whichprovide themwith low-cost spaceon site. They’re able to sell theirhomemade food before hopefullyupgrading to a full exhibitor pitch infuture years. This gives them amuchneeded leg-up towards a great future. Our policy of selecting fairly and basingour decisions on quality means that youget the tastiest festival in the region –bar none.

Explore our town withfun trails and activitiesBefore we launched Shrewsbury FoodFestival, we went andmet people whorun food shops in town.We askedthemwhat they want and this is whatthey said: ‘Something that doesn’t takeall the shoppers out of Shrewsbury, something that gets a fewmore peoplethrough our doors.’So, from day one, we’ve been keento spread the love – or business, ifyou prefer a literal translation. We’vegone out of our way to create trailsand activities that encourage peopleto visit the town’s market, local shopsand our brilliant, brilliant independentrestaurants. And there are two reasonsfor that. Firstly, we want to be a goodneighbour and get on with the people
who are in town 365 days a year, compared with our two. But it’s alsobecause we’re so, so proud of thepeople who keep the town’s foodindustry going that we genuinely wantto showcase it.Of course, we also want to giveyou something to do that’s fun andenjoyable once you leave TheQuarry.Hopefully you’ll visit stores that you’venot visited before and you’ll make thempart of your weekly round.Or you’ll dine at restaurants that you’llfall in love with before visiting them overand over again. This year, we’ve got a series of eventsaround town. There’ll be a puddingtasting at the town’s Baptist Church,

Helpingothersto thriveOur festival wouldn’t exist without thesupport of the community. And so it’simportant to us that we give somethingback to say thank you to those whomake our event work. When we launched our festival in2013, we decided to donate £1,000a year to a local school so that it couldinvest money in a garden. And the project has worked successfullyever since. We’ve worked with schools acrosstown, giving out cash to deservingprojects that help children to engage.Because of your support, more childrenacross Shrewsbury have grown theirown fruit and vegetables, harvestedthem in spring, summer and autumn, cooked their own food, and used foodwaste to make compost – therebycompleting the cycle.
Education
The principles behind our educationprogramme are quite simple; we wantchildren to know where their foodcomes from so that they are in touchwith local produce and respect theirfood. We don’t want our youngsters to growup in an environment where food iscasually thrown away or where thereis a disconnect between the effortinvolved in growing and processingfood and the end product. It’s not just children that we’re keen tohelp. We also work with Self Help Africato run a Secret Supper, which takes

Beautiful pots and pansfit for the very best chefsWhen you see our chefs whippingup incredible food on theWenlockSpring Food Stage or the FBCManbyBowdler Cookery School you’ll noticeone thing . . . No, it’s not the amazingfood that they’re cooking. Nor is it thesensational local produce that they’reusing to create stunning dishes. Thething that will make your jaw drop inwonderment is this: The pans. We’re supported each year byNetherton Foundry, which is based atHighley andmakes pans that last alifetime. They’re made frommaterialscollected in Shropshire using traditionalmethods and get better with age.The company is run by husband-and-wife teamNeil and Sue Currie, whohave built up an impressive client list inrecent years. It started like all the best things do; with
amistake. Sue andNeil had landeda contract to make pans for one ofthe UK’s best-known celebrity chefs.Their contract involved outsourcingproduction to China, which left themdistinctly underwhelmed.“It didn’t sit easily with us,” says Sue.“Here we are, just down the road fromthe cradle of the Industrial Revolutionin the heart of Shropshire. We thoughtwe ought to be able to do somethingbetter.”So they set about making their ownpans. Neil had beenmaking smallhousehold appliances for manyyears while Sue had ametal bashingbackground. Together they wereunstoppable.Neil says: “We simply decided to dothings ourselves and to do them better. We knew we could make gorgeous,

beautifully designed cookware and weknew we could make products that lasta lifetime. We also knew that we coulddo pretty much everything right here inShropshire.”And soNetherton Foundry was born. The company has blossomed in recentyears and now supplies the county’sbest chefs as well as providing pansfor kitchens and home cooks all yearround.Sue adds: “We’re delighted to be partof Shrewsbury Food Festival and tosupport the stage and the chef school.Hopefully people will lock on to whatwe do andmaybe buy a few pots andpans.”They’ll last a lifetime – so what are youwaiting for?Further details are available at www.netherton-foundry.co.uk

How we are doing ourbit to protect the planet
Whenwe started our festival, we hadpretty simple aims.We wanted tocreate an event that showcased thebest food and drink from our region. We wanted to do something that hada great atmosphere and that wasfamily-friendly. We wanted to kick-startlocal chefs and restaurants into thinkingbigger. And we also wanted to makesure we did all of those things withoutdamaging the planet. And so we invested in a recyclingsystem that ensures we don’t send ourwaste to landfill, or to be burned, if itcan possibly be avoided. It would becheaper, quicker and faster if we did.But the planet would suffer. So we stickour hands in our pockets and employspecialist companies who sift through
the tonnes of waste that’s left when youall go home. Our recycling partner, CwmHarry, spends 72 furiously productive hoursmaking sure glass, plastic, wood, cardboard, paper andmetal are allseparated before being sent to bere-used.Our volunteers also make sure thatevery ice cream stick, sweet wrapper, paper plate and piece of colouredribbon – don’t ask, they do strangethings in the kids’ tents – is reclaimedand put in the right place.Shrewsbury Food Festival chair AndyRichardson said: “It’s really importantto us that we respect TheQuarry, respect local residents and respect theenvironment.
“We aim to recycle more than 95 percent of the refuse that’s generated byour event, which is an extremely highfigure.“We’d encourage people to help usby putting their rubbish in the correctlylabelled bins and bymaking sure theyleave the park in the same conditionthat they found it – pristine.“We’re very grateful to the volunteerswho help us to achieve our aims ofkeeping the park safe and clean – andmore recruits to TeamOrange arealways welcome.”This year we are very excited to alsobe bringing a Food Hub to the festival, where you’ll be able to learn how toturn what could be considered wastefood into a culinary delight.
Keeping the Quarry Park pristine is important to festival organisers, so please note the recyclingbins in the centre of the picture

Making the connectionbetween farm and forkBringing farmyard animals toShrewsbury Food Festival has been amasterstroke. At the end of each day,our security guards make a sweep ofthe site and we can guarantee that thearea that’s the last to be cleared is theLanyon Bowdler Animal Zone. That’s because people love to see cutepiglets, a rare breed cow and calf andother farmyard animals. It’s important to us that people makethe connection between farm andfork. And that’s why we bring animalson site.Yes, they’re cute to look at. But it’salso important to reflect on the mannerin which they’re well looked afterby such farmers as Great BerwickOrganics and also SamGray, fromMiddle Farm, at Church Stretton.
BreedsSam breeds soay sheep and BritishLop pigs while Great BerwickOrganicsproduces British Longhorn cattle andall have become an integral part ofShropshire’s food scene. The animals have the best livespossible, Sam says. It’s important that people see them atthe festival because they can see howwell they are looked after and thatthey’re in exceptional condition.Samwas inspired by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s dishevelled curly locksand his do-as-it-says-on-the-seed-packet approach to veg growing.“I am sure that I was not the onlyone inspired by those early episodesof Escape to River Cottage. But ifsomeone had told me back then thatI’d become a smallholder, I wouldhave laughed disbelievingly whileeyeing upmy company car andlaptop,” says Sam.
“Growing up just north of London withan early career in national accounts,I was in no way prepared for thefuture that lay ahead. Escaping toMiddle Farm has been a reality check.“Becoming a smallholder with rarebreed pigs, chickens, veg, fruit andfarm kids has taken practice, patience
and an inordinate amount of self-motivation.“From collecting eggs and pigcarcasses to hosting radio shows withlocal chefs and writing books, thestories and adventures are aplenty.”Sam recently visitedMalawi on a self-funded trip to find out more about SelfHelp Africa.Further details are available at www.middlefarmcottages.co.uk

Clare Downes, owner of Monkhouse Food and Drink
A flourishing partnershipIt’s all well and goodmaking beautifulfood and drink. And it’s all well andgood staking your mortgage on afestival in Shrewsbury’s beautiful park. But you need to have someone to letpeople know all about it.And in our case, that’s our friends atMonkhouse Food and Drink.Company owner Clare Downesfounded her food and drink marketingand PR agency after spending herformative years in London. As part of the Appleby family – thepeople who’ve beenmakingsensational Cheshire cheeses formore than 50 years – she spent herchildhood years learning from her ownrelatives. Those lessons informed her adultcareer and gave her the inspiration forMonkhouse Food and Drink.
Clare says: “It’s all aboutunderstanding what producers andother clients are going through, what their needs are, how we cancommunicate their message andhow we can help them to grow theirbusiness.”Clare and her team have been helpingShrewsbury Food Festival since itsinception – and the partnership hasflourished.Chairman Andy Richardson says: “Inessence, Monkhouse are a Londoncalibre agency that just so happen tobe based in Shropshire.“They’ve done an incredible job ofcommunicating our message on anational scale and they’ve been part ofa much wider team that’s helped us togrow.Marketing and promoting foodand food events is such an important

job. If you don’t get your message outthere, it doesn’t matter how good yourproduct is. Clare’s team has workedwith plenty of local clients and done anexceptional job time and again.”Festival Chief Executive Beth Heathadds: “Sometimes, the most importantthings are the ones that go on in thebackground. And when it comesto Shrewsbury Food Festival, that’scertainly true. The volunteers, the healthand safety guys, the security team andour two brilliant office staff are whatmake us tick. Monkhouse are partof that wider team – they’re a greataddition to the line-up for any artisanproducer.”Further details are available on01939 290399 or by emailing [email protected] or atwww.monkhousefoodanddrink.co.uk
