Financial Literacy Month Events

April 1-30, 2012Allstate Foundation: Allstate Foundation Financial Literacy Month 30-Day ChallengeThe Allstate Foundation and its national partner, National Network to End Domestic Violence, will launch a new, month-long initiative in April challenging its followers on Facebook and Twitter to a 30-day financial fitness challenge. They will be providing tips, insights and ideas on how to cut, reduce or eliminate unnecessary expenses and save money. The activities across 42 PNC markets provide an early start to smart money management and introduce children to the concepts of spending, sharing and saving. April programs utilize employee volunteerism and include hands-on activities, play-acting, book readings, and teacher professional development.

April 1- 30, 2012Wells Fargo: Teach Children to Save Day/Hands on Banking® classesWells Fargo volunteers will visit classrooms and community groups around the country to deliver Hands on Banking financial education classes as part of the bank’s annual participation in National Financial Literacy Month and the American Bankers Association’s Teach Children to Save Day (April 24). Wells Fargo devotes all of April to Teach Children to Save Day to encourage its volunteers’ year-round financial education efforts. The bank will also offer financial literacy tips throughout April on its Twitter page.

April 2, 2012, FloridaSunTrust: Children First FDIC Money Smart Utilizing the FDIC Money Smart module, "Financial Recovery/To Your Credit”, teammates will facilitate a financial literacy session. Their Family First initiative provides family strengthening programs to further enhance the stability of the families supported by the organization.

April 3, 2012, Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, 10:00 amComerica: Youth Savings Program Students will be able to open savings accounts and make deposits into their savings account in their in-school bank. Each student will record his/her transactions in their savings record, and will receive a quarterly statement.

April 3, 2012, West VirginiaSunTrust: Goodwill Reality Check SunTrust employees will assist teens with different “life stations”which are part of Goodwill Reality Check’s program. Stations include federal and state taxes, school loans, utility bills, child care, rent or mortgage payments, insurance, or other life expenses. Teens are then asked to choose a career path and marital status. Based on their decisions they are given a paycheck and visit the multiple stations to pay bills for the month. The goal is for each student to make it to the end of the "month" with money left over.

Prior to attending the Fair, students choose their future careers and are assigned salaries, which they must live within the day of the event. As students make everyday spending decisions at booths such as housing, phone, transportation, food and more, they learn first-hand just how expensive it is to live on their own out in the real world.

April 5, 2012, Los Angeles, CaliforniaUnion Bank: Teaching Financial Literacy at Avance Schools, Inc.Union Bank’s Los Angeles Main branch team taught a financial literacy class to a group of nearly 30 graduating high school students from Avance Schools, Inc., an independent public school funded by the California Department of Education that focuses on preparing students for college life. The class was part of a full day session that included a tour of the branch and an opportunity for the students to open accounts. Executive Vice President Leticia Aguilar, regional executive for Los Angeles and Central California, also addressed the class.
