DESCRIPTION

Each fall Hispanic/Latino Student Affairs sponsors Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM), a series of events that highlights the contributions, rich culture, and pride of Hispanic/Latinos in the United States. Northwestern's Hispanic Heritage Month celebratory events extend from late September to early November and include cultural shows, social gatherings, and educational speakers. Events include a Welcome Reception, Festival LatiNU, and much more. Visit the H/LSA website for a complete schedule of events.

National Latino Aids Awareness Day October 15, 2014October 15th has been designated as National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD). In 2003, NLAAD was established in response to the impact of HIV and AIDS on Hispanic/Latino communities nationwide. See HLSA webpage for schedule of events.

We aim to explore intersectionality across social identities, and engage in dialogue on issues relevant to our needs, participants are invited to join us for the Women of Color Retreat and Symposium the weekend of January 23-25. Festival LatiNU October 25, 2014; 6:30 p.m.Norris Center, Louis RoomFestival LatiNU is the signature event for Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration. Alianza, the Hispanic/Latino Student Alliance, and Hispanic/Latino Student Affairs sponsor this event, which features musical and dance performances from Northwestern student groups and Chicago area groups. The program also features cuisines from various Latin American countries.

“The Day of the Dead El Día de los Muertos: Mexican Traditions of Remembrance” Humanities Lecture Series October 30, 2014; 7 -8 p.m.Evanston Public Library, 1703 Orrington Ave Evanston, IL 60201Northwestern faculty member Dr. Hector Carrillo takes us on a multimedia journey as he explores how Mexican cultures of remembrance have transformed the mourning for the dead into a romantic and nostalgic celebration of life.

Dia de los Muertos

November 2, 2014; 5 p.m.Location TBAHispanic/Latino Student Affairs observes this traditional holiday on November 2nd. By displaying an altar at the Multicultural Center and encouraging people to place items on the altar, the community honors departed family members or friends. Sheil Catholic Center also offers a bilingual mass on the Sunday closest to November 2nd, where the significance of El Dia de los Muertos is explained.
