Victoria [email protected] May 2011EEX 2010
INTRODUCTION TO THE HOST SETTING
YMCA- non profit organization YMCA offers many programs such as before
and after school care, sport camps, summer camps, and many more.
The YMCA serves communities all over the country
ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES
Providing an affordable after school and before school program.
During my Volunteer Hours I completed the following activities:
• Tutored kids • Supervised and engaged in various activities
with the children I attended the program eight times during
the semester.
PARTICIPANT DEMOGRAPHICS The program consisted of elementary age
students. There were children with Autism and
behavior disorders along with physical disabilities.
While I was doing my service hours I was able to serve 5 children with disabilities.
SERVICE IN ACTION
PERCEPTIONS OF DIFFERENCES
It was very hard working with both children with disabilities and children without but I’m glad I did it!
I started to look forward to going because everyday I was there I received a new experience to learn from.
The best experience I had was being able to help a child, who had Autism, with his social anxieties and make friends in the program.
CONNECTIONS TO YOUR COURSE
The service learning hours were for my EEX 2010 introduction to special education course
Three topics I better understand are Autism Spectrum Disorder, IEPs, and inclusion.
Gave me a start the experience I will need in order to be a special education teacher
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT One aspect of service-learning is to show the
power and importance of being civically engaged.
Volunteering not only helps others but it also helps yourself. It is something that everyone should experience
Volunteering is a way to make a difference in your life and the lives of others.
Hands on experience such as service learning is a great way to learn.
I liked my service learning project so much that I am continuing to volunteer.
All students should do Service learning. Hands on experience is the best way to learn!
FINAL THOUGHTS
I am glad I was able to take part in service learning
I will continue to participate in volunteering in my community and gain more experience to help me with my future career as a special education teacher.
