1. Executive Summary

The LGBT Forum have the honour and pride of being the opening event for Barnsley Diversity Festival. Pride 2010 came together after a considerable amount of effort by Barnsley LGBT Forum members. By working in a multi Agency approach with third sector and statutory services the Forum was able to demonstrate how communities can work together to breakdown barriers and integrate successfully across cultures. 2010 showed that there is a strong LGBT community in the borough which produced a fun filled entertaining day which showcased the LGBT culture and the diversity of people living in Barnsley. Compared to Pride 2009 more LGBT people attended. In 2009 the event was held in the Town centre and attracted many members of the heterosexual community. 2010 saw a higher numbers of the LGBT community and showed a cross cultural attendance with members of other nationalities as well as LGBT communities coming from as far a field as Manchester, Wakefield, Doncaster, Sheffield, Huddersfield, Rotherham and Leeds. The day had a wide variety of acts on the main stage from Iranian Belly Dancers from the Barnsley Black, Ethnic Minority Initiative, local singers, drag queens from round the country and special guest stars such as Roweta of X Factor and Gaydeo Fame, Scooch for Eurovision and many others. Stall for all the family, information stall offering support to the communities, Fun Fair rides, demonstrations from South Yorkshire Fire Service, Barnsley Collage and games from Barnsley Football Club (BFC).

2. Special Thanks

The LGBT Forum would like to thank everyone who supported the event and all their hard work. We would like to give a special thank you to all the statutory and non statutory services who allowed their staff time to help the Forum pull together Pride 2010 in and around their working hours. South Yorkshire Fire, South Yorkshire Police, South Yorkshire community Foundation, BMBC, Barnsley collage, Barnsley Hospice, BFC, Berneslai Homes, NHS Barnsley,

Barnsley diversity Festival, Barnsley Eye, +ME, All the Stall holders, BPL, Dearne FM, Barnsley Hospital, Premier Inn and One Barnsley. The kind people who gave up their time to make this event happen.

3. INTRODUCTION The Forum: Barnsley Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Forum (Barnsley LGBT Forum) is a constituted body of ordinary people who give up there time to volunteer to improve the lives for all LGBT people in Barnsley. The Forum is an inclusive group of people which includes heterosexual members too. As volunteers, they give up their time and money to work with statutory voluntary and private businesses to tackle every day LGBT issues. The Forum works to a Mission statement with a set of Aims and Objective drawn together by a yearly action plan. The action plan for 2010 – 2011 will address LGBT Rainbow tick which is a training programme for companies to achieve an award for social inclusion; 2010 pride event and work with South Yorkshire Police and BMBC to deal with issues on hate crime. The Forum also works with the NHS to address health inequalities and promote healthy lifestyles to our community. Barnsley Diversity Festival is lead by BMBC and partners. One of its aims is to showcase how Barnsley is becoming a multicultural society and demonstrate how cosmopolitan we are becoming as a culture and society. By working in partnership with the Festival the Forum was able to reach a wide base of the population. The Pride Event: The second Barnsley Gay Pride event proved to be extremely successful event. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with the exception of Local Press that gave alternative viewpoints. The positive feedback consisting of immediate verbal feedback from people who attended, postings to the facebook page, messages sent to the LGBT Forum and Barnsley Pride websites, and e-mail messages sent individually to members of the Price Committee. Some of these are included later.

There were some challenges in the run up of the day which were addressed. These challenges can help inform use at the planning stage for all future events and Pride celebrations. It is without prejudice but disappointing to see that certain establishment/s had made the decision to become independent and run a pride event on the same day and times. Naturally, there were some minor hiccups in the run up of the day which were addressed, but which can inform the planning of future events. However the committee members and partners worked together to solve the financial problems and the decision was reluctantly made to move the event from Mayday Green to the Metrodome to reduce costs. This was only a short distance from the original spot but allowed the Forum to keep within budget. The event also teamed up with Barnsley Hospice to try and raise money for both the Hospice and the Forum. This would be achieved by two methods.

1. To hold a sponsored football penalty shootout working with Barnsley Football Club.

2. To have two stalls at the event to raise money independently for each organization.

Unfortunately, there were no takers to the sponsorship intervention so the organizations relied on the fundraising from their individual stalls. On a positive note the Forum made grate strides when we were able to engage with new venues who are now considered to be LGBT supportive. These companies such as Blah Bar, Dirty O’Dwyers, Lucorum, Co Co Bar, Koffee Bean all welcome the LGBT community. The second stride was the two communities of LGBT and Barnsley Black, Ethnic Minority Initiative (BBEMI) came together to support each others events thanks to BMBC Diversity Festival. The Barnsley Pride Committee are very proud to have held such a successful second Pride. The Committee feels their overall aims were achieved. The aims and objectives are outlined below.

4. Aims & Objectives of Pride

The aims and objectives of the Pride event were:

To hold a successful Gay Pride event in Barnsley, launching the All Barnsley Diversity Festival.

To celebrate LGBT culture and raise awareness of the LGBT community among all Barnsley residents.

To raise the profile of Barnsley’s LGBT community, and the Barnsley LGBT forum.

To have an inclusive event, where people of all ages can feel welcome, including families.

To raise awareness of the equalities & diversity To work in partnership with a range of diverse groups,

organisations and services. To network and learn from each other. To celebrate achievements by showcasing existing work on

the equalities agenda. To breakdown barriers between all communities and support

equality and tolerance. To attract LGBT people from within and outside the Barnsley

community and demonstrate that Barnsley was ‘ready’ for a Gay Pride event.

To hold an event where there are no incidents of prejudice and discrimination.

3. Attendance

Around 1,500 people attended the event from other towns and cities. Buses came from Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester and Huddersfield, Barnsley, Doncaster, Wakefield, Rotherham and Hull. Other Pride events helped to promote Barnsley Pride 2010 on their main stage as they did the previous year 2009. Working in true partnership with other Forums helped to make this year’s event a success. Attendees comments:

“I think the work the forum does is amazing and seeing some life injected into town for all of us. Don’t get me wrong I love the clubs and what the bars are doing but would also like somewhere like one of the coffee shops to offer somewhere for people to meet and

chat as a social event alongside what is already out there” (Drew Bogg 2010 Facebook)

”Thanks to all you lovely people for coming down to see us at Barnsley Pride yesterday, it was great to see so many of you signing up for your Launch Packs!! We had a fabulous time...special thanks to Totally Gaga who played an amazing set, you were fabulous!!” (CoCo Lillipop 2010 Facebook)

“Well done to all at Barnsley Pride 2010, I really enjoyed the day and the weather was fab! I really enjoyed the main stage acts and Rowetta's appearance was brilliant. It was my fourth pride event this year and had a really good summer, no rain at any of 'em. Well done and thank you.” (Tony N. Morris Sept 14th 2010) 4. Exhibitors and Stalls Local businesses, businesses from other towns and cities and voluntary groups were invited to exhibit and promote their own work related to the equalities agenda at the conference. In total there were 30 stalls in and around the Metrodome Arena & gardens. There were also a wide variety statutory services who engaged with the participant on the day. See Appendix 1 5. Stage Programme With a wide variety of acts ranging from BEMMI community belly dancers to Drag Queens, local artists and star appearances from X Factor Rowetta and Eurovision Scooch. See Appendix 2 6. Recognition to our key Speakers

The event programme included an opening address by the Deputy Mayor of Barnsley, John Parkinson, the Chief Executive of Bernslai Homes Helen Jagger and South Yorkshire Police Chief Inspector Mark Spooner. The Deputy Mayor spoke about integration and breaking down barriers between communities in Barnsley. Helen Jagger spoke about social inclusion, the Rainbow Tick and the right of equal opportunities for the LGBT community.

SYP Mark Sooner spoke about reducing hate crime and how the partnership between the Forum and SYP is growing in strength. All speakers agreed :

“Equal access for all free at the point of need" The values that are meant to drive the

Equality is about recognising differences and providing services to those differences.

8. Demonstrations:

Attendees were provided with an opportunity to participate and observe with demonstrations from: 8a. South Yorkshire Fire Rescue (SYFR) This demonstration consisted of health and safety with chip pan fires, roadside accidents and information for careers in the service. At the conclusion of the demonstrations observers understood:

Health and Safety with the dangers of fire and what to do in certain situations

That SYFR are proactive to LGBT people and have a positive policies to LGBT staff

SYFR have an understanding of the importance of LGBT cultural backgrounds

SYFR have a positive attitude to issues with LGBT inequalities

SYFR can identify barriers facing the LGBT community and can and can support the community to overcome these barriers

8b. Barnsley College Arts Department – The college built a working model of a Dolphin in rainbow colours to demonstrate the support the college has for LGBT young people and for students. They gave information about the college and how it is an inclusive learning environment for all ages. They are now working closely with the LGBT Forum to develop a young peoples LGBT college group who will feed into the Forum.

8c. BMBC Youth Services: The youth bus attended and worked with families and young people to address many key issues surrounding family life. They demonstrated fun and games in which families could work together. Family attendance also demonstrated LGBT people do have families and children. This also demonstrated that the LGBT community is made up of a cross section of the community. 9. Evaluation-

The evaluation is a result of all the feedback given during and post the event by people who attended and parties who engaged in the pride event. Overall it is argued that Barnsley LGBT Forum ran a successful pride which engaged with a wide array of other external forums, communities, organisations and partners. It was recognised that

pre planning is the key to a rewarding event which exceeded expectations. A full report will be compiled and distributed to all organisations, services and partners who donated funding to the pride event. The Forum recognised that the pride achieved its aims and objectives and was able to work with partners to breakdown barriers. The event engaged with other minority community groups such as BEMMI and helped to identify other local businesses who have a strong supportive role to play with the LGBT community. Pubs, clubs and coffee shops came on board, to hold the after party with the launch of Co Co Lollipop’s new gay night. Feedback from the community and supporters who attended showed demonstrated the recognition of all the hard work the Forum achieved on the day and the work which the forum is involved with. They recognise that the forum is about the issues which concern the wider community. Finance: Barnsley LGBT Forum is proud to confirm to our sponsors that we operated and kept to funding allocated for the event. Financial implications for the event highlighted the importance of keeping to a tight budget. Where many other prides overspent Barnsley Pride came in on budget. In 2009 Barnsley’s first Pride cost £9,300. Finding funding for 2010 was extremely difficult as the country hit a recession and funding became extremely difficult even more so after the Governmental change. 2010 Pride event cost £7,000 to hold this was a saving of £2,300. We at the Forum recognise the support we were given and wish to convey our gratitude to our sponsors for their role promoting equality to minority hard to reach groups such as the LGBT.

10. How are we going to do things differently? Based on the evaluation – the following is a summary of the key areas where the Forum and partners felt they could do things differently:

1) To undertake more outreach work to engage with as many people and organisations as possible that can help develop the event and have a proactive part in pulling the event together.

2) Be more aware that volunteers give their time as a gift and may

not be able to commit to the work needed prior event to the event. A pride committee needs to consider the time constraints and barriers which volunteers have in the development of a event.

3) Recognise that true equality is the ability to meet the needs of

people Issues and requirements’ such as disability access have to be paramount. Access on grassy areas can be difficult.

4) Take more time to understand and complete equality impact

assessments to examine the impact pride can have on diverse groups.

5) Listen to attendee’s feedback to identify what they enjoyed and

what they did not enjoy about the day so this can improve the event in the coming year.

6) Choose an environment for the event which is more prominent,

for example one of the following: The Town Hall, Mandela Gardens, Lock Park or County Way Car Park.

11. Conclusions Overall it is argued that the Forum ran a successful pride which engaged with a wide array of other external forums, communities, organisations and partners. It was recognised that pre planning is the key to a rewarding event which exceeded expectations. A full report should always be compiled and distributed to all organisations, services and partners who donated funding to the pride event. The Forum highlighted how it was able to monitor budgets and able to take action when finance dictates to keep within budget. The Forum recognised that the pride achieved its aims and objectives and was able to work with partners to breakdown

barriers. The event engaged with other minority community groups such as BBEMI and helped to identify other local businesses who have a strong supportive role to play with the LGBT community. Feedback from the community and supporters who attended demonstrated the recognition of all the hard work the Forum achieved on the day and the work which the forum is involved with. They recognise that the forum is about the issues which concern the wider community. 12. Action Plan and Next Steps As a result of the event the Forum is planning the next steps and proposed to take the following action:

1. Build on links made with all partners and stakeholders of the event in order to build an effective stronger Forum. This will be carried out by the forum becoming proactive with all parties and help them gain a comprehensive understanding of LGBT issues. The forum will support the organisations with their equality and diversity issues. For example, this will be measured by the impact on the LGBT community with improved service delivery. The time scale will run from 2011 to 2012.

2. Work with all our partners to develop other events e.g All

Barnsley Diversity Festival. This will take the form of supporting statutory services with Holocaust week and LGBT History Month and World Aids Day supporting +ME. Time plan for this will be in the first six month of 2011.

13. Acknowledgements Our thanks are extended to everyone who took part and/or contributed to the event. In particular the key note speakers stall holders, exhibitors and to those who attended. A special thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their time on the day to make the

event run smoothly and all the members who worked so hard prior and in the development of the event. The Forum wishes to acknowledge +ME Barnsley’s HIV voluntary support organisation for all their help with the whole community of Barnsley. This includes LGBT, Heterosexual and BBEMI community. Our aim is to build on the momentum and success of the Pride event to ensure that the principles of equality and diversity are embedded in all we do.
