ENGLISH Part 1

Read the following texts from two people describing their country. 3

Page 4: files.schudio.com€¦  · Web view7F ENGLISH & HUMANITIES PROJECT. INDIA. The aim of this project is to apply English, Geography, H. istory and RS skills to . a . study. of . India

Assessment task 1: Part 1: How do they describe their country? What are they trying to say about it?

Success criteria: you need to…

Responded to the question using full sentences Use quotes to support your answer Respond to the whole text Give a point of view about India

ACCOUNT 1:For me India is a big mansion (the one you see in Indian televisions or bigger than that) with 29 different rooms (States) and 7 drawing rooms (Union territories) and several pools (rivers).

In this big mansion a big joint family lives. In fact, every room is so much spacious that in every room a joint family lives. In every family there are brothers and sisters (people of different religion and ethnicity) who live together. They stick with each other during festivals (Christmas, Eid, Guruparv, Holi, Bihu etc). They sometimes do not talk to each other, sometimes there are pillow fights, sometimes serious fights where they got injured. But after saying water under bridge they stand with each other.

Some families always remain peaceful and you find some families always fighting. Some families fight with other family of different room on the sharing of pools and bathroom. There is always tension in some rooms. But some rooms gives you the chance to come and enjoy the peace.

Besides every pool you find people swimming, bathing, sometimes washing their clothes (we really don't know how to use a pool), sometimes enjoying pool party and enjoying sunrise and sunset with a bottle of beer or with a cup of chai (tea).

Every room has something special to boast. One room is abode of caves painting, one is simply heaven, one boast Taj Mahal. There is one room which is always cold, one which is always hot. One where you can enjoy rain almost every month.

It’s a house which never misses to amuse you. Drama, Emotion, Crime, Fight sequence, Romance, Action, Adventure, Horror, Art, Satire everything you see here. It is never enough to say about this mansion.(Anurag Sharma-www.quora.com/How-do-you-describe-India )

ACCOUNT 2:When I read this question, I could not frame any sentence as India is a nation to which I belong to.

India being a very, very diverse country makes people see literally everything if they are looking enough. One can find riches here, and one can find poor here. The most cleanest of areas, and the most dirtiest of areas. The most crowded places and the least crowded places. You name it, we have it. The most tolerant people, and the least tolerant people. Everything combined makes India what it is.

Without these things India is nothing except a huge landmass on this planet Earth. India is a Beauty in Chaos, the kind which everyone loves and cannot just get away with. India isn't just a nation but a billion of feelings attached to the mere word.

Describing India is one thing which is not just possible to finish. (Sahil Bansal - www.quora.com/How-do-you-describe-India )

Part 2: Describe the place where you live (e.g. Bournemouth or England). See if you can compare it to a house in India. What would you say about the garden?HISTORY: Part 1From the sixteenth century onwards, the leaders of Europe believed it was their right to try to conquer other parts of the world and develop empires. They set up colonies across the world where they could push the natives out of their land and create their own towns and cities. They were also used for trade and to have somewhere to stop off when they were sailing. India became one of these colonies officially in the nineteenth century but it was first controlled by the East India Trading Company who set up a base there for trade in the 1600s. Many people argue that this made the country very poor. You are going to find out whether this is accurate.

Look at the sources below. How does Terry Deary interpret the empire?

Terry Deary’s interpretation of the Empire is positive/ negative because…

Famine (extreme starvation)

There were terrible famines that devastated India. When famine struck in 1876-1877 and 1899-1900 the British system of government could not organise a big enough relief effort. Too many Indians were growing ‘cash crops’ for the British, such as tea or cotton and not enough staple foods. It has been estimated that 19 million Indians had died from starvation and disease in these famines. Source: The Lancet 1901.

Florence Nightingale, the famous British nurse, said ‘we do not care enough to stop them dying slow and terrible deaths from things we could easily stop. We have taken their land, and we rule it, for our good, not theirs’.

Mohandas K. Gandhi

‘India has become impoverished [poor] by their [Britain’s] government. They take away our money from year to year. The most important jobs are reserved for themselves. We are kept in a state of slavery. They behave insolently [insultingly] towards us and disregard our feelings…’

Written by Gandhi in ‘Indian Home Rule’, 1938.

Some historians have argued that the British brought good government and economic development to India.

‘From 1815 to 1900 the British had built 2,300 miles of road and 2,900 miles of railway in India. The land used for farming increased from 400,000 acres to 3.2 million acres, the schools from 170 to 2900, the hospitals from 0 to 65…’

Written by James Morris in Pax Britannica, 1968.

It is 1887 and the British Empire is at its strongest… Queen Victoria is celebrating her "jubilee" year – 50 years on the throne. To celebrate this event a commemorative plate has been produced in her honour. The plate is designed to show the greatness of Britain, the British Empire and the Queen. However, half of the design has gone missing!Assessment task 2: Use your knowledge of the British in India to complete the plate.

Development

Indian government must improve the standard of living of people of India and thereby making India a developed country. A country can become a developed country by establishing new industries and factories as these industries are a major contributor to the national income of a country.

India is one of the Newly Emerging Economies (NEE) found in southern Asia. It is the world's largest democracy, and one of the world's fastest growing economies. It is currently the seventh richest country in the world, and by 2025 it is projected to be the third largest world economy after China and the USA.

India's regional development has been particularly uneven, even by developing country standards. Since the 1960s, India's regional growth performance has been polarised, characterised by a high-income club and a low-income club

There is a difficult balance between people and the natural environment. Rapid economic development has placed increasing pressure of India's natural environment. The scale of pollution has had a big impact on the health of the population and has contributed to global climate change.

According to the UN, the share of urban Indians living in slums is 24% - about 100 million people.

Why?

Lack of affordable low-cost housing and poor planning encourages the supply side of slums. Insufficient financial resources and lack of coordination in government bureaucracy are two main causes of poor housing planning.

Watch the video (link below) and choose two questions to answer. You must explain your answer, using evidence that you have found or from the video. Remember to state your opinion with justification.

HISTORY: Part 2As part of the British Empire, India played a significant role in World War I and World War II; this is often overlooked as many people assume that only Europeans fought. In August 1914, as the German army advanced through France and Belgium, more Allied troops were desperately needed for the Western Front so 161,000 India soldiers were transported to fight alongside their British and French comrades. In total 800,000 Indian soldiers, from the 1.5 million who volunteered, fought in WWI.47,746 were classed as killed or missing and 65,000 were wounded. As well as this, the cost of WWI pushed India’s economy near to bankruptcy. The Indian Corps won around 13,000 medals for gallantry, including 12 Victoria Crosses (the highest award a soldier can receive). The Indian support given to Britain’s cause surprised the establishment in Britain. The Times newspaper wrote: “The Indian Empire has overwhelmed the British nation by the completeness and unanimity of its enthusiastic aid.”

So, what motivated men to fight in a war thousands of miles from home, in a cause that did not seem to be their own?

the headline?

Why do think Khudadad fought as he did?

What do you notice about his appearance?

See if you can find out some more about Khudadad Khan.

When WWII started in 1939, 2.5 million Indian men and women stepped forward and became the biggest volunteer force in history. A special force of the British Indian Army, popularly known as ‘Chindits’, was responsible for stopping the inroads made by the Japanese into South Asia.

This is a memorial to Noor Inayat Khan; she was the only Muslim woman to be awarded the George Cross for Gallantry in WWII.Find out what she was awarded this medal for.

On Remembrance Day, Indian soldiers are remembered, along with all those who have lost their lives fighting in conflicts since WWI. The Royal British Legion designed this crescent specifically to remember Indian soldiers.

The sacrifice of Indian soldiers in WWI and WWII was one of the factors that contributed to India gained independence from Britain in 1947. India still has a special friendship with Britain and remains part of the British Commonwealth. RELIGION

Before India gained independence in 1947, there were three main religions within the country: ISLAM, HINDUISM and SIKHISM.

Unfortunately, conflict between the religions led to Partition in 1947. An area in the north of India formed a new Muslim country called Pakistan, while India became home for Sikhs and Hindus; this meant that many people had to move from their homes.

Assessment task 5: Your next challenge is to research and compare these three religions.

Success criteria Describe the god/s worshipped Describe religious symbols and texts Describe where followers worship Explain how followers worship Explain what followers believe happens when we die Explain how birth, marriage and death are celebrated Analyse the similarities between the three religions

You can present your findings as a table, a mind map or a creative way of your own; you should use both writing and pictures.

CULTUREIt is wrong to assume that India is defined only by poverty; as you found out on page 9, India is a NEE. Many businesses have set up factories and call centres in India, providing many job opportunities and cities have grown rapidly.

The Bollywood film industry makes more films each year than anywhere else in the world and the Indian fashion world is extremely profitable.

There is magnificent architecture, such as the Taj Mahal and the Lotus Temple.

The climate means that there are extremes of habitat for many different animals. Amongst other sports, India is passionate about cricket.
