TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — If you share your food with the hungry,
provide housing for the homeless, then light shall break
forth upon you (Isaiah 58:7-10).
Psalm — The just man is a light in the darkness to the
upright (Psalm 112).
Second Reading — My message to you, says Paul, was not
clever words of wisdom but the proclamation of Christ
crucified (1 Corinthians 2:1-5).
Gospel — You are the salt of the earth, the light of the
world. In your good deeds your light shines before others,
leading them to glorify God (Matthew 5:13-16). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997,

OFFICE HOURS Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m.—4:00
Closed for lunch 12:00—1:00 p.m.;
Friday 8:00 a.m.-12 Noon p.m.
GOD’S SUMMONS If we are not able to witness concretely to the love
of Christ in our lives, then we are truly salt that has
gone tasteless. Our flavor and impact are lost. How
difficult it is to get them back again.
In the late 1940s the Christophers movement began
in the United States. The Christophers’ motto, “It is
better to light one candle than to curse the darkness,”
attracted many through the Christophers’ effective use
of the media, advertising, and the encouragement of its
members to proclaim Christ in the workplace.
Jesus calls us to be that candle and to set ourselves
in the most visible place. Jesus, who brought eternal
light to the world, tells us that we, too, are the light of
the world. Through our words and actions we must let
our light shine in the sight of all so that in seeing our
good works, everyone may give praise to God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Part 2 of the 4-week “Mass” series:
Liturgy of the Word
The “Scripture” part of the Mass
(The Sunday readings are on a 3-year
cycle: Year A = Matthew, Year B =
Mark, Year C = Luke. This means that
a majority of the readings for that
year, especially in Ordinary Time, are
taken from that Gospel. The Gospel of
John is used in each of the years,
especially during Lent and the Easter
Season; because Mark’s Gospel is so short, John is used for five
weeks in Ordinary Time of that year. 2014 is Year A,
Matthew; next year, 2015, will be Mark and 2016, Luke, and
then in 2017 back to Matthew).
1. First Reading
We sit, like students, to listen to the First Reading, which is
taken from the Jewish Scriptures (Old Testament), except
during the Easter Season, when it is from the Acts of the
Apostles. This reading is NOT continuous, but is selected to
match the theme of the day’s Gospel or the Feast of the day.
2. Responsorial Psalm
We respond with a Psalm (or one of the Jewish or Christian
Scriptural Canticles); this is selected to reflect back on the
theme of the First Reading. It is meant to be sung, usually
antiphonally, that is, back and forth between a cantor (or
choir) and the assembly.
3. Second Reading
This reading is ALWAYS from the Christian Scriptures (New
Testament) -- usually from one of Paul’s letters. It has an
‘independent’ theme -- separate from the First Reading and
Gospel OR it is chosen to highlight an aspect of the Feast Day.
It is continuous, that is, read chapter by chapter -- week by
week. In Year A, in Ordinary Time, we will read from 1
Corinthians, Romans, Philippians and 1 Thessalonians.
4. Gospel Verse
We stand -- as “at attention” to prepare to hear the Gospel
proclamation; there can be a procession of The Book of the
Gospels. This is very short, usually one verse from the Gospel,
looking forward to the Gospel message. It is meant to be sung;
in Lent, the “Alleluia” is replaced with another antiphon.
5. Gospel
We continue standing; we mark our foreheads, lips and hearts
with a cross. This reading, like the Second, is continuous: this
year reading chapter by chapter through The Gospel of
Matthew. This is the pre-eminent reading!
6. Homily
We sit -- in order to “learn”. It is meant to be a sharing on the
reading and not a “Bible Class” but a challenging exhortation
to apply and live the lessons of the Scripture Readings.
7. Profession of Faith
We stand. This is not so much a prayer as a declaration of
what we believe; 2 options: the Nicene or the Apostles’ Creed.
8. Prayer of the Faithful (or Intercessions)
We continuing standing. The people/assembly are the
“Faithful”. The petitions might include the following: a) for the
needs of the Church; b) for public authorities and the salvation
of the whole world; c) for those burdened by any kind of
difficulty; d) for the local community.
Next week: Liturgy of the Eucharist.
Have a good week!

NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and
Consolation
New Beginnings is a Bereavement
Ministry designed to provide support to
Christian individuals who have
experienced traumatic loss in their lives.
The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling
disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a
sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers
several services that will gently accompany the bereaved
and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of
death and to the sorrow this entails.
HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination -
Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our
loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last
day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral
coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral
liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted
in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our
Christian hope in Christ’s saving death and resurrection.
Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick 702-459-7778
HEALING Grief Facilitation -
“Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be
consoled” (Matthew 5:3)
This support group offers trained individuals to help the
bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes,
individuals examine their feelings during this intense
period and look at coping mechanisms to move through
the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has
structured classes on various topics and also offers
sessions for participants to examine their experiences and
share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator.
Contact: Susie Cram 702-459-7778
CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved -
“If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the
Church, all the members suffer with that member” (1 Cor.
12:26)
When a member of Christ’s Body dies, the faithful are
called to a ministry of consolation to those who have
suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-
service offered to help individuals who are close to, work
with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who
are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will
teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal
grief behavior and share ways to journey with the
individual they want to help or support.

Music Notes
from Debbie Just a few notes! First of all, we bid a fond goodbye to Laura
Tucker, who has been the cantor at 10 am Mass since Holy Spirit
began! Laura has accepted a job in the Attorney General's Office
in Reno! We wish her the best of luck, and will miss her. Also,
we are looking for percussionists who might be interested in
playing at Mass. We already have a set of bongos and other
percussion, and beginning next month, we will have access to a
drum set every weekend - now, we just need some folks to play
them! If you are an experienced drummer/percussionist, please
call or e-mail me! I'd love to hear from you! Lastly, if you would
like to join our music ministry, there's always room! We could
especially use some help at the two evening Masses. Rehearsals
are held on most Wednesdays at 7:30! (they usually last about an
hour!) We would love to share the song with you! Just give me a
call so that I have enough music ready (459-7778 ext. 103).
