In June 1991 Mt. Pinatubo Erupted several times
larger than the 1980 eruption of Mount Saint Helens in Washington.
Introduction
The Giant Awakens
The giant awakens and the skies darken as the ash and soot fell down on the tropical
island of the Republic of the Philippines. The volcano now a ticking time bomb has come to life once again and the residents of Clark Air
base and Subic bay Naval Station worried about their fate.
As flaming pebbles and lava begin to devastate the countryside, emergency
response teams dispatched and make repairs on a satellite to transmit real-time data about
the volcano.Typhoon Yunya Bering down on the tropical
island. With this medley of disasters looming, Mission Control scramble to assemble a team of specialists to assist the island residents.

• 1902 TO 1903 THE US ARMY SET UP POST IN FERTIL PLAIN ON WHAT WAS LATER CALLED CLARK AIR BASE. PRESIDENT ROSEVELT SIGNED AN EXECUTIVE ORDER ON SEPTEMBER 1 ESTABLISHING 7700 ACRESS CENTERED ON CLARK AIR BASE.
• 1941 THE JAPANES LUNCHED AN ATTACK ON CLARK AIR BASE. CLARK WAS EVACUATED.
• 1945 ON JANUARY 31 AMERICAN FORCES REGAINED POSESION OF CLARK AIR BASE
• 1947 U.S. AND THE PHILLIPPINES SIGNS THE MILITARY BASE AGREEMENT GUARANTED AMERICAN POSSESSION OF U.S BASES IN THE PHILLIPPINES FOR 99 YEARS.

CLARK AIR FIELD•Nearly 1,000 446th reservists were called to active duty in support of Operation Desert Storm.
•Hundreds More wing reservists were activated for duty at McChord. Wing reservists pitched into to assist survivors of Mount Pinatubo eruption in Operation Fiery Vigil.
MOUNT PINATUBO AWAKEN
Mt. Pinatuobo had been dormant for 500 years, the size and impact of the eruption were completely
unexpected.

months of increasing activity, localized deformation, and emission of small plumes, a series of strong explosions on this date heralded the start of the
major pyroclastic phase.
MOUNT PINATUBO AWAKEN
The Secretary of Defense authorized evacuation of all non-essential military
and DOD civilian personnel and their
dependents at Clark Air Base to safe haven elsewhere in the
Philippines. Evacuation began at 0600 local on 10
June. 5 days later a massive eruption of
Mount Pinatubo occurred on 15 June that sent
debris over 100,000 feet into the air and then
down onto Clark, burying the base under one to two feet of ash. Those
who fled the base never went back.
EVACUATIONJUNE 10 5 A.M. MAJ. GEN. WILLIAM A. STADER13TH AIR FORCE COMMANDER,ORDERED THE EVACUATION OF ALL NON-MISSION ESSENTIAL PEOPLE AND FAMILIES TO SUBIC BAY.
THE FIRST VEHICLES WERE ROLLING OUT THE GATE SIX HOURS LATER 14,000 PEOPLE WERE ON THE ROAD HEADED FOR SUBIC BAY.
1,500 MISSION ESSENTIAL PEOPLE STILL STAYED BACK AT CARLK AIR BASE.
JNUE 10, 1991 ABOUT 14,000 FOLKS ON THE ROAD BEGAN THERE EVACUATION.
EVACUATION
• Fiery Vigil Evacuation of more than 45,000 military personnel, DOD civilians, and families from the Republic of the Philippines.
• Roughly 300 personnel were sent too Okinawa Air Base.
• While more than 19,700 took the trip of a life time by Naval Vessel to Guam, Hawaii, and the good old U.S.A.
ON THE USS MIDWAY AND ABRAHAM LINCOLN

•On load evacuees (2000 people and 500 pets)
USS Midway loading medical teams. 2,000 cots and enough food to feed 3,000 people for
two weeks
ASH SOLDIERS
MISSION SECURITY WAS A TOP PRIORITY, ALONG WITH RESTORING ESSENTIAL SERVICES LIKE POWER
AND WATER. MOVING MONITIONS OUT OF CLARK AND SUBIC BAY.
NAVY EXCHANGESeabees from Naval Mobile Construction
Battalion and Maintenance Unit 302, returning from Desert Storm was diverted to Subic bay
Naval Station.
CLARK AIR BASE PHILLIPPINES
• THE VOLCANO RENDERED CONTINUED U.S. OPERATION AT CLARK VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE, SO AT ONCE THE U.S. DRAFTED A BASE CLOSURE PLAN. A SAFE, ORDERLY, WITHDRAWAL.
CLARK AIR BASE HOUSING
• The Secretary of the Air Force visited Clark Air Base on 5 November and paid tribute to those who remained throughout the volcanic activity and cleanup-the Ash Warriors. The American flag was lowered for the last time on 26 November 1991 by those Ash Warriors and Clark Air Base was turned over to the government of the Philippines, ending over 90 years of US presence at the base.
CONCLUSION• More than 53,000 Evacuated and 20,000
permanently displaced• Taking Several Hundred Human lives• $ 250 million in damage• Shut Down two major U.S. Bases in the
Republic of the Philippines.
