Delivering sustainable solutions to global challenges is the ultimate goal of an engineer’s calling under normal circumstances but the times are not normal and the current worldwide financial difficulties have imposed additional challenges on all parties – owners, funding agencies, engineers, consultants, contractors and end users.

The September 2009 FIDIC conference in London provides a timely opportunity for networking and an open exchange of information on how to deal not only with the current situation but also with the long-term challenges facing the world’s infrastructure.

Panels of international experts, clients and industry leaders will address how engineers can mitigate the world’s environmental problems, rebuild ageing and inadequate infrastructure for the world’s growing urban populations and collaborate in the globalisation industry including capacity building.

What are the global challenges that face the industry? How will infrastructure be funded? How will we mobilise engineering resources in both the developing and industrialised countries? How can we promote skills and raise standards to deliver sustainable solutions to the global challenges? What are the industry perspectives short-term and long-term?

I’m very pleased to be speaking at my first FIDIC conference, as it will provide the opportunity for me to exchange views and opinions with senior colleagues from around the world.

It is a key responsibility of all industry leaders, from FIDIC member associations and companies, to actively address the issues that we are all facing.

I would like the actions that emerge from the conference to make a difference to the way that development is carried out in the future. The need for that development to be made sustainable is paramount.

Peter Gammie Halcrow

FIDIC 2009 is a very good opportunity for the leaders of the engineering profession to demonstrate that not only do we care about solving the challenges created by water scarcity, climate change and the need for a lower carbon economy, but also that we are committed to doing so in concert with financiers, business and political leaders.

This is entirely consistent with Halcrow’s long-standing purpose of ”sustaining and improving the quality of people’s lives”.

I’m hoping that the profession

will become more unified in its approach as a result of the conference, and its voice will be stronger and will deliver a more consistent leadership message in relation to sustainable

development around the world. We need to form a closer bond between the so called developed and developing countries, and that puts a greater onus on the multi-national firms like Halcrow to help with this process.

There has never been a better, or more important time, to enter and grow within the engineering profession. There may be a blip in demand for young engineering professionals at the moment, but we need to be looking ahead at the demands upon us to 2050 and beyond, and planning, and acting accordingly.

Blackwood: making a difference Thomopulos: networking

Gammie: unify for strong voice
