Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time / Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

NOTES FROM THE RECTORY: Our Light Must Shine In today’s Gospel Jesus tell us that our light must shine before others. He continues saying that our light, when seen by others, will invite others to glorify God. So how brightly do our lights shine? Do others see them shining? Are we lighting the way to God for others? These are tough questions, but ones worth giving our attention. When we were baptized, our parents were given a candle (which was lit from the Pascal candle). The priest or deacon handed the candle to them and said, “Receive the light of Christ.” It was a beautiful symbol indicating that our parents and godparents accepted the responsibility for being that light of Christ to us and for us. As we grew in our faith our light should have also grown. Has it? Being the light of Christ is not easy! It is not easy to live our Catholic faith boldly in this day and age. (I don’t think it was ever easy.) Being a practicing Catholic today is very counter‐cultural. So many things in our society go against our Catholic beliefs. So many people try to convince us that everybody is doing it or is entitled to these rights. How do respond when the topic of conversation is abortion, transgender issues assisted suicide or same sex marriage? Do people see the light of Christ shining through our words? Isaiah gives us a few examples of how we can shine our light. We are told to share our bread with the hungry, to shelter the oppressed, and to clothe the naked. Our actions can shine brightly when we live as Jesus did. We also have to be careful that the light is not shining on us for others to see. We are to do these things to glorify God, not ourselves. We shouldn’t brag about the good we do. We should just do it! How do we find the balance? An example would be if we volunteer our time helping at a food pantry or senior center don’t go around telling everyone about your wonderful efforts. Rather, invite others to join you the next you go. You light will shine through. We must work at keeping our lights shining and focused on God. It is not easy, but I truly believe it is worth the effort. One day our lights will lead us face to face with our loving God! Let it shine! Mrs. Terry Navarro

DESDE LA RECTORIA: Nuestra luz debe brillar En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos dice que nuestra luz debe brillar ante los demás. Él continúa diciendo que nuestra luz, cuando sea vista por otros, invitará a otros a glorificar a Dios. Entonces, ¿qué tanto brillan nuestras luces? ¿Los otros la ven brillar? ¿Estamos iluminando el camino a Dios para los demás? Estas son preguntas difíciles, pero vale la pena prestar nuestra atención. Cuando nos bautizamos, nuestros padres recibieron una vela (que se encendió con la vela Pascal). El sacerdote o el diácono les entregó la vela y dijo: "Recibe la luz de Cristo". Era un símbolo hermoso que indicaba que nuestros padres y padrinos aceptaron la responsabilidad de ser esa luz de Cristo a nosotros y para nosotros. A medida que crecimos en nuestra fe, nuestra luz también debería haber crecido. Ha crecido? ¡Ser la luz de Cristo no es fácil! No es fácil vivir nuestra fe católica audazmente en estos tiempos. (No creo que haya sido fácil nunca). Ser católico practicante hoy es muy contracultural. Muchas cosas en nuestra sociedad van en contra de nuestras creencias católicas. Muchas personas intentan convencernos de que todo lo q están haciendo es lo correcto y que tienen la razón. ¿Cómo responden cuando el tema de conversación es el aborto, los problemas transgénero, el suicidio asistido o el matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo? ¿La gente ve la luz de Cristo brillando a través de nuestras palabras? Isaías nos da algunos ejemplos de cómo podemos brillar nuestra luz. Se nos dice que compartamos nuestro pan con los hambrientos, que protejamos a los oprimidos y que vistamos a los desnudos. Nuestras acciones pueden brillar intensamente cuando vivimos como lo hizo Jesús. También debemos tener cuidado de que la luz no nos brille para que otros la vean. Debemos hacer estas cosas para glorificar a Dios, no a nosotros mismos. No debemos alardear del bien que hacemos. ¡Deberíamos hacerlo! ¿Cómo encontramos el equilibrio? Un ejemplo sería si ofrecemos nuestro tiempo como voluntario para ayudar en una despensa de alimentos o en un centro para personas mayores y no les contamos a todos acerca de sus maravillosos esfuerzos. Más bien, invite a otros a unirse a usted la próxima vez que vaya. Tu luz brillará a mas través de ello. Debemos trabajar para mantener nuestras luces brillantes y enfocadas en Dios. No es fácil, pero realmente creo que vale la pena el esfuerzo. ¡Un día nuestras luces nos llevarán cara a cara con nuestro Dios amoroso! ¡Dejalo brillar! Sra. Terry Navarro

BAPTISM AT EASTER TIME Easter is the Church’s special FIFTY DAY season of Baptism. Lent is its forty day preparation period. We are asking those of you requesting baptism for your child to take part in the Easter season’s flavor by having your Baptisms during the Easter season and not during Lent.

Practically, this means planning your Baptism before February 23rd or after April 12th. In this way, your child will be a reminder of all the joyous life we share in our humanness that has been and continues to be graced by the Risen Lord’s love.

2020 Annual Catholic Appeal Come, follow me… and heal our world

Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you can pick up on the back tables. The Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one‐time special collection. It is a pledged campaign commitment where you can make a gift payable in installments. A pledge is a promise to make a gift over a span of time.

Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me… and heal the world.”

Once we reach our parish goal in paid pledges, any additional funds come back to our parish to help fund our needs.

If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you who did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond, we will conduct our in‐pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend.

Campaña Católica Anual 2020

Ven, sígueme... y sana nuestro mundo Esta semana le pedimos que por favor se tome un tiempo para reflexionar sobre el folleto de la Campaña Católica Anual. La Campaña Católica Anual es muy diferente de una colecta especial que ocurre una sola vez. Esta es una campaña donde se establece un compromiso a través del cual usted puede hacer un donativo a pagar en plazos. Un compromiso es una promesa de hacer un donativo a lo largo de un periodo de tiempo.

Cada promesa de donativo hace una diferencia, porque todas las parroquias participan en la campaña y los donativos de muchos permiten a nuestra arquidiócesis ofrecer los ministerios y los servicios que son tan necesarios para responder al llamado de Jesús: “Ven, sígueme... y sana nuestro mundo”.

Angelo Cordoba, Jr., a parishioner of St. Mary Star of the Sea, is scheduled to be ordained to the Order of Deacon on May 9, 2020 at Holy Name Cathedral by Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago. This is a public announcement of the upcoming ordination and fulfills the canonical requirement. Catholics are obliged to reveal any concerns, impediments or circumstances that could prevent Angelo Cordoba, Jr. from receiving Sacred Orders and should contact the pastor, Fr. Roger, or the Cardinal with such information as soon as possible if there is a serious question about the candidate’s suitability for ordained ministry.

Baptismal Preparation Sessions are held at 7:00 PM on the 4th Monday (English) or 1st Thursday (Spanish) of the month at the rectory. Parents and Godparents are expected to attend. Please register at the rectory.

MARRIAGES: Arrangements should be made at least 4 months in advance (prior to engaging hall) to allow for adequate preparation and instruction. Contact the Rectory for an appointment.

CONVERTS: RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults begins each year in September, reaches its climax with Baptism or reception into the Church at the Easter Vigil (Holy Saturday), and concludes on the fiftieth day of Easter, the feast of Pentecost.

COMMUNION CALLS: Please call the Rectory to arrange for Communion to be brought to the sick.

SICK CALLS: For confession, anointing of the sick or in any emergency, please call the Rectory.

NEW PARISHIONERS: Welcome to the Parish! Please come in and register any weekday at the Rectory.

Las pláticas de preparación bautismal son el 1er jueves del mes (español) y el 4o lunes de cada mes (ingles), en la Rectoria. Papás y padrinos deben asistir. Favor de inscribirse en la Rectoría .

MATRIMONIOS: Los preparativos deberán hacerse al menos con 4 meses de anticipación (antes de contratar el salón de recepción) a modo de tener tiempo suficiente para la preparación e instrucción. Favor llamar a la Rectoría para una cita.
